Bayer-Z28 07-31-2006, 03:56 PM Proof of the best LT and Y setup! (http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=537001&highlight=Proof+of+the+best)
__________________________________________________ __________________________
I see a lot of Exhaust threads here. There are people looking for diversity, bang for the buck, sound, performance and fitment.
Lets try to throw them all into one thread.
Post what you have, how much you spent, Fitment, Opinion of this setup, Quality and Sound (link for videos...or go to www.ls1sounds.com)... Please try to not downgrade a certain product. Others might like it for one reason or the next.
Heads/Cam/LS6 intake.. TO name a couple..
I have SLP Long Tube headers 1.75" Primaries, 3" collector
Off Road Y
TSP Rumbler CB
I also used my stock manifold bolts. After a couple times of re-snugging them, They're seated pretty well..
I think this combo sounds great. It's pretty loud, but I have a high tolerance for a loud exhaust..
NEW SETUP VID

My Old Setup
SLP LT's, Catted Y then an ORY conversion w/ Borla CB, no plate..
VIDS... First is on the HW, 5th to 4th to 3rd downshifts. Had tops off and windows down. Shifting soft. Not really at WOT the whole time 98%(my rug gets in the way, I have to STAND on it). I hit 4th for a second then laid off

kick Z tail out 08-01-2006, 09:16 AM I've got your back brother. :D Luckily it just so happens that I love to talk about my setup.
-RK Sport (AS&M) mid length 1.75" headers and off road Y pipe, ceramic coated
-Magnaflow high flow cat
-GMMG chambered exhaust, oval tips
Used ARP header bolts and Percys aluminum gaskets.
Video (http://videos.camaroz28.com/search/GMMG/0/wm/048d5c0c-2cd8-4799-bca8-8e8b1b3dd6c6.htm)
Additional video (http://media.putfile.com/Donut-Shooting) for those wanting to hear high RPM tire smoking fun. ;)
Bought the entire setup used from board members, except for the bolts/gaskets and cat. The headers I picked up for $300, and the GMMG; $500.
I LOVE this setup. It's got an awesome tuned, yet retro musclecar sound. Everybody that hears it in person is just in love with it. I think I've sold about 5 more of these for GMMG... They should send me a badge, decal or somethin. ;)
The headers, I bought these mids because of the smog plumbing. But they sound great either way, they are the same diameter primary tubes as you find on long tubes.
I think soon I'm going to throw on an electric cutout in front of the cat just for kicks, though. :D
Šenial™ 08-01-2006, 01:16 PM Cool idea for a thread, i think it would be cooler if everyone added pics or videos also to get an example of what it looks / sounds like, like kick z did.
Ill write up mine and take some pics once i get the time and initiave...
2QUIK6 08-01-2006, 02:40 PM Here's a pic of the muffs, with 2.5" true duals on the '95 LT1, Kooks 1 7/8 LTs, 3" Pypes Cats, and Dynatech 4.5x7" oval muffs.
http://hometown.aol.com/onebadwskier/images/myduals5.jpg
These muffs are straight thru with a thin "splitter" down the center.
With the stock cam, it made my LT1 car just a bit louder than my stock LS1 car.
My wife drives this car, so its not that loud, not near as loud as I was afraid it might be with straight thru design mufflers. But it has a very nice deep rumble to it, I'm thinking about putting them on my truck and GN as well.
My truck with shorties, cats and flowmasters is louder.
As far as price, about $100 per muff, $70 per cat, and Jeg universal 2.5" duals and 3" X-pipe I did myself...
More pics can be found here

For gains, with the headers and true duals as being the only change from a completely stock car, right down to the air box, it gaind 40rwhp.
Here's a sound clip with the cam in my sig...stock cam will not be this loud

rokudan 08-03-2006, 09:12 AM I've got the GMMG setup as well. But that is the only exhaust mod, stock manifolds, Y-Pipe, etc.
It has in my opinion the perfect sound. I want to do headers, but almost fear it will change the sound to something I am not as happy with. It is moderate in volume until you get on it, then it sounds really opened up, deep, and clean. Plus I think it looks better than anything else out there...
Here's the one pic, more at: http://weblog.sitepros.net/gallery/Imager.asp?Dir=/Onyx_Camaro_ZR1

no pics at the moment
edelbrock shortys
no cat
exhaust leak at the straight pipe :o
borla exhaut, with full plate
its real quiet at idle, has a nice sound after 2k because then the exhaust leak drowns out
when full throttle pegging the rev limiting, it screams!!! sounds amazing at 3k and up IMO
people tell me that its actually really loud when getting on it on the streets also
I have a high flow cat i wanna put in, that way i can open the plates a bit and avoid lots of rasp
Šenial™ 08-06-2006, 05:09 AM never really a fan of the gmmg on the 4th gens, but it doesnt look to bad rokudan
rokudan 08-06-2006, 02:43 PM thx. Too bad no one can see the pic at this time. Server crashed, working on restore to another server.. Oh the joy... On a Sunday no less...

gms maf, comp cam, accel injectors, air foil, k&n intake
using a goerlich mandrel bent 3" kit with flowmaster muffler. very first mod to car. sounded great, not to loud but had deep rumble under accel.
the over the axle pipe was very tight and took multiple times to get clearenced. added twin tips to rear.
using bbk headers, very hard to install due to clearence issues, barely got y-pipe to fit, had to clearence frame, sounded a lot better ,deeper tone yet but had other mods done at that time. made the comp cam soud so much better.
added high flow cats and made it even tighter and had to cut and weld pipe connector on pass side to bolt to header
2QUIK6 12-18-2006, 02:50 PM I finally have a sound clip of my setup.. true duals, LTs thru Dynatech split flow ovals and Pypes mini cats...cam specs in my sig.
http://hometown.aol.com/onebadwskier/images/dual-sound.mpg
Something worth noting is that the cam grind will have a huge impact on the exhaust note and sound.

Yea, I had no idea hooker flowed quite so well. Do they sound good though?
Bayer-Z28 12-22-2006, 01:42 PM No idea. I immagine compared to Flowmaster, or with any exhaust system if set up well, it might... Check www.ls1sounds.com They might have it.

The exhaust is nothing but deep bass below 2500 rpm, kind of like a purr, and above that it sounds like a pissed off tiger. I can't push it too hard because I'm breaking in the rear and tranny, but even at 1/4 throttle the thing's speed feels outacontrol fast.
*Update 17 AUG 07*
I've had some time to play with the setup now and man is this perfect. Plug access is outstanding, no leaks (knock on wood), unreal sound. The coating MAC did on the headers is holding up, and there's no rust anywhere.
The headers aren't emissions legal but I passed easily with this setup.
*Update 13 NOV 07*
So far I've been complemented many times by many people including a Viper owner, and a LS1 owner w/ mids and cutouts. Still NO issues with any of the exhaust components. Here's an in-car vid:

Bayer-Z28 08-14-2007, 07:58 PM Can we get this stickied please?
I think it will help a lot.. Everyone posting their exh set ups and how they like it.. Reference for anyone looking for a CB or headers.. or whatever..
karpetcm5 08-14-2007, 08:03 PM Got Magnaflow catback, good fitment awesome quality, not too crazy about the sound i know most people love the sound. Headers are shorty Pacesetters which are POS will never buy shorties again and especially Pacesetter shorties heard good things about there long tubes. Rest is just a cutout.
Projectz28 08-14-2007, 08:23 PM Can we get this stickied please?
yup, I was thinking the same thing. Looks like we are getting a few good reviews so I stickied it;)
BTW, here is mine:
355 solid roller (263/270). Hooker 1 3/4" LT's, Custom 3" Y pipe made by Mufflex, thru a 3" Flowmaster A/T cat back.
http://videos.camaroz28.com/video/ec3e0b0e-c887-49e0-91ad-996e01825771.htm
I will be switching up the exhaust infavor of something with less weight. I am thinking of just hanging some small bullets and dumps but we will see what I can fit under there later. I'll post a vid if I ever get that done.
Bayer-Z28 08-14-2007, 09:44 PM ^ Sweet! :D THanx boss!
I think this will answer a lot of questions and help out a lot.
CamaroUK 08-20-2007, 06:14 PM Stock exhaust, but with the muffler replaced by some 3" pipe. Ghetto and loud but it hurt my low end torque, and my ears:

Nicest exhaust tone I've ever heard, satisfyingly loud and deep on deceleration and loud on acceleration. On the in-car clip, the camera just about picks up the deep "boom" sound between shifts.
Its one of the cheaper systems at $295, its aluminised steel but mine came with 2 x 3 foot long 3" polished stainless slash cut tips. I've had it on for over a year now, the aluminised section is just starting to get some rust spots on it, thats with daily driving in British weather. Best money I ever spent.
ABA383 08-20-2007, 08:41 PM Here's the thread of my 3" stainless TDs with an X pipe and a chassis mounted Spohn TA with 2 DS loops...The exhaust now exits out the side just behind the doors...The pipes come out of the mufflers and curve back towards the front of the car and out of the sides...The sound is amazing and actually not too bad inside the car, no drone, etc...The Edelbrock 304 SDTs are awesome...I promise to figure out my wife's camers for a sound clip...
At the track I picked up a negligible amount of mph (.25) over my previous Open Borla cat back, but it was about 30 degrees hotter when we tested the TDs...

NJ-LE 08-21-2007, 10:49 AM As in sig ... all MAC pieces using the unbranded copper gaskets that came with them. Excellent plug access. I've had no leaks. A precautionary slight retightening at ~ 500 miles ... still tight ~ 2000 miles later. Sound ... louder and deeper than stock but not so loud as to be a radio or conversation problem at highway speeds. Fairly loud at wot above 4k. The joints are almost all ball & socket (1 slip connection in middle of I-pipe ... to allow slight length adjustment?) so there is easy alignment adjustibility. I was able to use the factory mounting hanger at the rear of the transmission too. It didn't need any O2 sensor extensions but a couple of tie-wraps as wire leashes were used. I'm still using the factory plug wires with no problems.
Kooks LT1 1" 3/4 with emissions fittings.
Kooks Y-pipe w/ cats
Borla adjustable catback.
Very nice headers but I felt the install was a little more of a PITA because you have to leave off the oil cooler and run a different oil filter. It would have been nice if that had been in the instructions, but the search feature on this site hooked me up with the info. Y-pipe is a great fit. Tucks up nice. The previous Y-pipe I used with my Hooker LT's had random tech high flow cats, and I can definitly say that the cats that Kooks uses will make your car a bit louder. I was pretty surprised at how loud my car was when I fired it up. Not as loud as a car with no cats, but way louder than it was.
Oh, and I passed VA emissions with everything in my sig using the new exhaust system if anyone cares.
Bayer-Z28 08-28-2007, 07:56 PM Yea, I had no idea hooker flowed quite so well. Do they sound good though?
Actually.. Update on this one.. My buddy's MS4 cam, PRC heads and Jet Hot LT's,, ORY and hooker CB sounds GREAT! I LOVE it!

LETHALxLS1 09-03-2007, 04:00 PM I have a SLP "Loudmouth" on my car. I hated it from day 1.The drone and dump truck sound made me not want to drive my car. I recently put a Borla XR-1 on in place of the LM resonator/muffler and it sounds great!! I am very happy with the Borlamouth.
streetracerx 09-03-2007, 05:38 PM Mac Mids, through stock cat into a cut-out. if cut out is closed it goes through a slowmaster muffler. Sounds sexy whether its open or not.
Bayer-Z28 09-11-2007, 01:10 AM ^^^ Vids? Sound clips guys?? ;)
STREETLETHALZ 09-13-2007, 02:56 AM i don't have any pics or sound clips, but i had the setup as follows:
BBK shorties/Ypipe
flowmaster 40DF in place of catalytic converter
tailpipe running out 1/2 way down passenger door
best sounding F-car exhaust i've ever had, plenty of room up under the car, no carpet fires, and plenty of positive attention from anyone else on the road!
on my first 4th gen i had stock mannies, cat delete mod, and flowmaster muffler mounted to stock exhaust piping. i hated it with a passion, i'd never recommend it to anyone.
i later deleted the flowmaster and over-the-axle pipe and put a bullet before the rear axle and i loved it!

marzen 10-02-2007, 10:16 AM New exhaust: Pacesetter Race Only Longtubes + Texas Speed True Duals:
First off, my old system was Arizona Speed and Marine "longtubes" and a magnaflow catback (off road, no emissions).
New System Pros:
*Despite having to raise the engine up, the Pacesetters allow for MUCH more working space than the previous headers. Plugs are easier, the header bolts themselves are easier to get too, and they look a ton better.
*Everyone suggested getting a dual system custom made as opposed to the Texas Speed kit. I'm located in Philadelphia, PA and it's near impossible to get people to work on your car with no emissions stuff. The Texas Speed kit did NOT fit right on. After a few snips and trims in my driveway, I was able to fit it nicely. Well worth it for me, instead of waiting and paying for a shop to rig something up. The supplied clamps and fasteners are really top notch, far better than the cheasy U clamps.
*The overall sound difference is OUTSTANDING. 9999x better than the other headers and the catback. I have no idea as to performance gains yet, but I would imagine they would be minimal as I have a basically stock engine.
*Finally, no more catback rattling. I had issues with my magnaflow hitting the panhard bar and axle...NO MORE!!
New System Cons:
*Pacesetters bang steering shaft and frame, had to move/modify some stuff get it right.
*True duals leave me with no tailpipes, let's hope I don't get pulled over!
*...I honestly can't think of anymore cons right now
Bayer-Z28 10-30-2007, 09:19 AM ^ Would stiffer engine mounts help w/ the PS shaft bang??
lvgoldie 11-04-2007, 07:11 PM My system is mellow. It had a flowmaster muffler when I bought the car in April. I recently got a Gibson stainless steel catback with 4" intercool chrome tips, SLP lid. It sounds GREAT and I have noticed increase get up & go.....very happy!!
rel3rd 12-14-2007, 05:50 PM SORRY....already posted new thread about my new setup, before seeing this thread, but here ya go....
Got tired of being teased about running my stock catback, and probably choking off some horsepower, so I finally swapped it out. Keep in mind I already had a Borla adjustable and a Magnaflow...didn't like the sound of either, so stuck with the stocker for most of the Summer. Ironically, the new setup sounds damn near identical to the Magnaflow, lol...Maybe the new setup will free up a tenth or so. Car went 11.67@115 with stock catback FWIW.
I pieced it together for about 175 bucks total and the car actually "feels" better at most any rpm when driving.
Parts used:
$54.39 Dynomax #54064 I pipe
$66.39 Dynomax #53061 over axle pipe
$25.00 Force Pro-Series 3" chambered muffler (new, but secondhand)
$21.98 Riker 3" 90* elbow
$18.98 Riker 3" turndown spout
Five 3" Stainless steel band clamps (already had)
I did have to make/weld a hanger onto "tailpipe", but was able to use stock rubber hanger. I need to figure out how to keep exhaust from "moving"...It sort of moved around with stock catback as well. It doesn't hit anything, but in last video, you'll see what I mean by "move", lol.
Here's a couple quick videos...
One of car idling and revved, a couple others taken in-car, and another quick warm idle vid...

83blackcamaro 02-07-2008, 10:42 PM SLP loudmouth $340 (more expensive now...)
Hooker LT's (coated- jet-hot, with egr) $499
Hooker ORY (also coated) $225
o2 sims $34 each
'96 Z28
This setup is extremely loud... especially at about 2500rpm......theres a 225 dollar fine in CT when your car is this loud...if you go with this setup....WATCH FOR COPS. Besides that, i am extremely happy with the quality of all of the parts, their fitment, and their installation (i had access to a lift for the headers....so they weren't AS bad....my hats off to you garage LT install guys) still- had to jack up the engine and the tranny to fit the passenger side. performance gains SOP - very noticeable. wicked acceleration- if you can get your tires to grip, and on highway at higher rpm's there is also a very noticable gain in power. if you want LOUD--go with this
jdgz28 03-16-2008, 11:08 AM I read that you have the slp header kit, and by the way your dyno run sound sweet. I bought the same kit and found out the instruction basically suck. I got the dr side header on but I can't get the pass. side on. How did you get yours on? The back part of the flange is hitting the inner fender. Do you have any ideas.
thanks
2000GTP 03-16-2008, 11:47 AM My setup went like this:
Pacesetter coated long tubes with emissions fittings
Pacesetter off-road y-pipe
Y-pipe modified with two Pypes high flow mini-cats
Magnaflow catback
QTP stainless steel cutout welded into the i-pipe before the axle dump
Fel-Pro 1406 gaskets sprayed with Permatex copper spray
02 simulators
12" 02 extensions for front sensors
3" band clamps for the y-pipe to header connections and the y-pipe to i-pipe connection
1" header bolts as supplied by Pacesetter
MarcR94v6 03-29-2008, 10:50 PM Ceramic coated JBA shorty headers with ceramic coated y-pipe into stock cat (for now). Hooked up to a 3" TSP rumbler with a custom s-bend to fit the LT1. No tips yet, I am polishing and re-using the stock z28 tips.
This setup is too loud for me. The sound is great but it is just too loud. I haven't even gone over 3500 RPM's yet, but it's about as loud as a hog motorcycle above 1500 rpm.
88irocz28 04-13-2008, 02:46 PM Finally got around to uploading some soundclips of my stock down to the paper filter m6 94 TA.
Idle, free rev, normal driving and WOT on stock exhaust minus the muffler:
stock exhaust no muffler driving.mp3 - 0.52MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/10484232d20f0cf2/)
Idle, free rev and normal driving with flowmaster super 44 on stock exhaust:
flowmaster super 44 idle rev drive.mp3 - 1.07MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/10483506b6db08de/)
There's bunch of pops and spikes in the sound because my recording device has a very sensitive mic that doesn't handle loud bass too well. Hope you've got headphones or a good sound system to get a good idea of how the two setups sound.
Is there an LT1 sound archive to which I can add this?
Pyrodawg 04-13-2008, 04:46 PM Ok

I understand the LM is an acquired taste, personally I love it... it's a little bad after the cam due to the car running rich so it pops alot.. but WOT it sounds incredible.. be warned, if you have strict cops or laws.. one you prolly wont pass inspection and two you will get pulled over
as for the PS LTs.. for the price you really cant complain... mine are holding up OK. If I had the money I would have splurged on kooks but I didnt, as for plug access I absolutely love them.. I can get to 5 of the 8 plugs very easily and only 3 take some more effort definitely cut down the plug swap time 150%
rel3rd 04-13-2008, 05:28 PM Did away with my single in/single out setup and switched to an SLP dual/dual catback.

greenmachinedriver 05-17-2008, 07:29 PM pacesetter long tube headders. off road y, tsp rumbler. 383 le2 with le3 heads. 11.5:1 compression. sound awsome but way to loud. i could not go around the block without getting a ticket. it is only slightly quieter than open headders. i need to find away to make it quieter and am thinking of adding some small mufflers ot the tailpipes.

Great sound, not too loud normal driving but extremely loud at WOT, lots of power, i wish it was a bit louder though, im one of them who likes annoyingly loud cars.
my96z 11-17-2008, 01:58 PM Havent seen many Dynomax set ups. Mine system consists of:
Hooker LT's
Mufflex Y
3" piping
3" Dynomax ultraflow PN17221 (I think).
Car has mods in sig.
After hearing good reviews on how good they flow on a turbo site I belong to I went with it, I even run one on my turbo van (same exact muffler). Its a single exit V-6 look.
Enjoy, let me know what you think.

The SRZ 11-30-2008, 03:41 PM What's wrong w/ the clip? I wish I could hear this because I'm curious to know how loud this thing is w/ the bullet and turn down before the axle.

my96z 11-30-2008, 03:47 PM Silas,
probably pretty similar to mine, but his is going to be louder as he has just a bullet and mine is a oval, but with the outlet under the car you get alot more resonance and sound inside the car as opposed to the outlet on the outside of the perimeter of the car.
