GM lost $3.2 Billion dollars after you take into account restructuring costs that are a one time deal.

If you take out those costs, they made a $1.2 Billion profit. So it looks like GM is well on it's way to getting out of the hole. They don't need Nissan, or Kerkorian.

Not only that, but Nissan reported disappointing numbers.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/26/bu...6nissan.html?_

... it starts to become clear why Nissan may have pursued this proposed alliance.

Already a thread on this topic, by the way.

As for Nissan, I have no use for them. At all. In the realm of Japanese makes, I kinda dig Hondas. I have no use for Toyotas, but I can't argue that they make a solid product for the most part. But Nissan does nothing for me. They don't have Toyota's quality, and they don't have Honda's engineering savvy.

:blah:

I used to like Nissan back in the early 90s when SE-Rs and Pathfinders were the best in their segments, and I owned a '91 Maxima (still one of the most handsome 4-door sedans ever made, IMO). But they lost their way with the uglified Maximas and trucks and I lost interest.

Back to the topic at hand, it's good to see GM eking out some operating profit again. Even though they continue to lose market share I see that their revenue is up; could this be the result of their lower incentives? I'd like to see the breakdown of where that profit came from, hopefully some of it from NAO, and hopefully not too much of it from GMAC which is soon going (mostly) bye-bye.

Isn't there always a but with GM?
You know I would have had a 4.0 in college, but....
I would have a better paying job, but...
We would have made money this quarter, but...
It's always something. This is a great example of the lack of accountability in America. Not only is it happening on the personal level, but now on the corporate level. Just own up to it GM is a bleeding cow!

I have to disagree with your view.

It's not as simple as I'm perceiving your comments. Mr. Wagoner agreed to take 4 billion out of the system 14 months ago....he's upped that to 8 billion and the charges for the buyouts are being charged against this quarter. When you look at the magnitude of that buyout and what it represents -- it's truly incredible. Further, Wall Street evidently doesn't agree with your view.

It MAY have been a bleeding cow, but I believe the surgery was successful for the most part.

It's funny, a lot of people aren't seeing the big picture in this. GM had an operating PROFIT if you don't count the restructuring charges that won't be there the next time around.

Just read the breakdown in the Free Press. Turns out NAO lost $85 million (and lost 2.8 point of market share) and GMAC made $900 million. So it's a little early to break out the champagne. Certainly it's a move in the right direction, but it's more a case of the news being 'less bad' than being good.

Still gotta sell cars...still gotta sell cars without discounts....still gotta put designs out that turns heads.....

Not to be a curmureom but after 20 years of hype and lowered expectations, I'm just not quite ready to wave my GM banner just yet.

Would that be like a curmudgeon? Your point about GM needing to design cars that "turn heads" is spot on.

Appearently I meant curmudgeon:

"An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions." - from dictionary.com

Also could be interpreted as someone how sours a moment of good news.
