Need new headlight bulbs. What are some upgrade choices?

After 12 yrs, one of my original headlights finally burned out. So, it's time for some new and brighter lights.
I figure I might as well replace both headlamps and the foglamps.
I would like something that would be brighter but not have to upgrade the electronics/wiring.

What are some good bulbs/manufactures/wattages?

Thanks for the help.

well in order to run higher wattage...you have to upgrade the wiring harness

the upgrade sells for $40 i think someplace, and is pretty easy to install. then you can run 100w bulbs.

OH....and it would help if we knew what kiind of car it was

You could always get those xenon or HID bulbs witchever you prefer to call them, they are a bit pricey for the kit but are worth it, dont buy a cheap kit on ebay though, i went that route and ended up wasteing $80 on a kit that was junk basicly

Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention the year.

It's a 1994 Z28.

So I pulled the headlight out...it appears the entire headlamp needs to be replaced instead of just the bulb?

I do not want to go the upgraded wiring harness route.

Are there good after market headlamps that replace the factory lamps?

Nope...

Nothing good to replace the factory lamps on the 93-97 cars.

I believe the only option, period, is the teensie-weensie rectangular units with the crappy lens and reflectors in them.

Same goes for the driving lamps. Crummy reflector and lens pattern in those, too. I sold my good one (other was destroyed) on Ebay as soon as I could.

bout your best bet is to take the old headlight unit, pull the filiment out of the glass housing (tourch and some pliars) and then epoxy in some better bulbs.

search the appearance section. there is a very good write up on how to do it. most guys upgrade to the Slyvania Silva-stars. they are not much brighter but they have a whiter light which makes driving a bit better.

Well I see the stock lamps are about 55W.

What's the most the factory wiring can handle, watts wise? 80W? 60W?

Thanks again for the info so far.

And another question.

On the Sylvania website you can go to the E-catalog. Choose "sealed beams lamps" and then the "rectangular 55mm X 135mm" choice.
Then click "footnotes".
Says "Life at 7.0 volts". What does that mean? When it's on, it's pulling 7.0 volts?
