rebuilding my shortblock as we speak, car made 640rwhp with 14psi, few days later i started getting a lot of blow by. The rings on there were Plasma-Moly. What do you guys recommend? I don't want to do this every 5k or so :)

I ran total seal rings for two years at 9 to 1 compression on 15 LB of boost with no blow by.

In my application (383) i went with tool steel rings( Childs&Alberts) and J&E pistons nitrous supercharged, with 6.1 Manley rods. Also inconel valves, a must for 20+ lbs of boost. This was composed by Hutter Racing of Nascar fame, but very expensive. Also used a super duty Cola crank. An important issue> You may want to O Ring the block for that kind of cylinder pressure.

Incorrect ring gap maybe? 14psi shouldn't be breaking the rings if they are meant for boost. What kinda fuel and timing? Compression of motor? Have you looked at the rings yet?

no not quite there yet, hopefully by tomorrow ill have everything apart. Not sure how many miles on the rings as i bought the shortblock used.
as far as timming only running 20 with 93 pump gas, the compression on the motor is 9.4 :1

I would recommend HellFires if you want the ultimate in a high boost piston ring. They are a bit rough on the cylinder bores but they will hold huge boost numbers! And if I remember correctly I have heard that poly moly rings can cause problems with detonation in a boosted application like yours.

I was leaning towards detonation myself. At 9.5 with 14 to 15psi on 93 your tune better be real safe. You never know if the conditions are a little different...i've seen a few psi difference on many setups just with a change in weather....good luck..let us know what the rings look like

I have the hell fire rings....there is some good info on here about them, ...They are not as bad as everyone thinks or as hard on the cyl walls....I think Int8 is running them in his twin set up and did a tear down and there was no markings on the walls....there is a post about it,,

there was no detonation and the tune is very safe.

I'm also vote for using Hellfires.

Total Seal AP Series is a ring I use pretty frequenty with my boost guys that need a ring better than a Plasma Moly/Cast Iron combo but don't need a full on chrome steel or tool steel compression ring like a race piece would.
