Clunking from rear.....already narrowed it down. HELP!

I did a search and most people with clunking from the rear get it when either turning one way or another. I have clunking when I hit bumps. I replaced the shocks and that didn't cure the problem. I know it's not my torque arm or u joints on the driveshaft. I have the car jacked up and was playing with stuff but nothing seems wrong. Again just clunking going over bumps in a 1995 A4 Z28. Is there any bushings that could be a common problem on these cars? Any help is appreciated.

mine was clunking in the right rear also. i didnt think it was the shocks but replaced the De Carbon junkers with monroe sensitrac ones and it took care of it. The shock bushings were the problem but if you replaced them then i'm not sure.

Transmission mount.

O yeah brand new transmission mount. Thats not the problem. I can hear it coming from the back of the car.

LCAs torqued to spec? Maybe you're already doing it, but check for clearance issues with the suspension loaded.

Just a possibility, have you checked the panhard bar? (I think thats the name for it) the bar that runs diagonally from the left side of the rear axle to help locate the rear end? I had a similar problem with my '00 SS and tightening the mounting bolts cured the problem.

Good luck with the search, squeaks and rattles can be maddening to track down. Hopefully you will be able to find the source of yours!!!

i have the same type of clunk when going over bumps... i thought it was because the rear passenger shock was blown, which i think it was still, but it is still there. I think it might be a clearance issue with the exhaust as it goes into the muffler and slips into the rubber bracket hanger... if i push up on the exhaust, it does have a little play in it, and i think on hard bumps it might be hitting hard enough to bring the exhaust in contact with the underside. Just a thought from me, that is what I think my problem is, maybe i am wrong.

You guys probably have your torque arm bolts loose. You have 2 large bolts that connect your torque arm to the rearend. Make sure these are tight.. These are prone to come loose because rear end fluid leaks down on them and the constant pressure on them can loosen them up.

bump stops
