General OBDII Code Clearing Question

I need to smog and I've been having some issues that I think are resloved but my question is how long it takes for the PCM to complete it's processes after clearing a code.

No, that didn't make any sense. What I want to know is if I clear a code for say a misfire today, can I go smog tonight and will the smog computer read my PCM as okay?

Does the computer have to go through a whole lot of routines after every time a code is cleared?

If the problem has been fixed, then you can wait as little or as long as you want after clearing it. If not fixed, go quickly and hope that you get smogged before your PCM figures out the problem is still there. I'm assuming you're using a device to clear them... if cutting PCM power, it will then want to relearn some fuel management parameters and you may need to do a little driving (like on the way to the smog station).

I'm using an OBDII scanner to clear them. I know that the computer goes through a number of routines specifically requiring a number of start ups, running for a set amount of time, shut down, etc. to confirm certain functions doesn't it? I didn't think it was just a matter of relearning fuel tables and driving issues to be prepared to clear the smog check.

I've heard something like that about emissions-related devices, don't know if it applies to general/ignition issues...

Smog place might get you for monitors not being ready, though. I think in California, you have to have at least 3 monitors ready at time of smog. I had the same issues...no codes showing up, but monitors were not ready. So, yeah you could get away with it if say one of your O2 is bad, but the monitor has not reset yet, but you still have at least 3 monitors.

My lesson...finally passed smog....1 EGR valve and 4 O2s later, though. Tried to do the timing thing...it never worked out for me.

Ended up fine. Passed CA smog without a problem ;)

you need to run your monitors off you can only have 2 pending monitors to pass the smog test.. some smog shops will tell you if you ask and tell you need to run them off but if you just drive not wot for 1 or 2 days they should run off i have gottin mine to run in as little as 15 miles but it may take longer. best to have fuel 15-85% full and just drive normal (speed limit) on cruise for 20 miles or so
