Integrated Phone and mini antenna

I got my 96 a few years back and one thing that I noticed on the car was a phone. This phone is one of the old style car phones and it mounts on the side of the center counsel about where your knee sits when you drive. My first instinct was to tear the darn thing out but then I found a little antenna mounted on the top of my car right behind the t-top intersection. This most likely is for the phone and if I were to tear it out it would leave a silver dollar size hole in my roof. Anyways does anyone else have this type of car phone in their car and what did you do to remove it? It is also very interesting to see where mobile phones have come in 10 years, because this thing seems ancient these days.

those antennas usually sandwich together. There is the piece the goes on the outside of the car, and a piece that goes on the inside, no hole.
