alternator rebuild kit

for LT1 Camaro. Has anyone bought one? Where did you get it? Was it good quality parts?

I need one that includes at a minimum a set of brushes and the front and rear bearnings.

I believe f-body LT1s use the CS 144 alt.

See bottom of this page for the 'bearing kit':
http://www.alternatorparts.com/CS144_200_amp_kit.htm
I would think that would be the stock bearings?

Cool, $10 for bearings is a good deal. Anyone know where to get brushes for a CS144?

I've got a used alt. I'm freshening up to have a hot standby. I disassembled it last night, cleaned all the pieces, wire-wheeled the housing and inspected everything. It looks great, except the brushes are shot and the front bearing rattles a little. I'd like to get new bearings and brushes in it and reassemble it.

$38.00 seems awfully steep for it though. Ugh. It's $43.70 by the time you pay shipping. Does anyone know where to find one cheaper? Thanks for the help so far.

Sold only to the trade:
http://www.amscovf.com/31-da-298k.html
Note it's price is 85 CENTS tho..
Maybe buy 10 and spread them around?[I'd take 2-3..]

I also found the brushes only referenced as :
R 132 10495229.1989661 8x5x22.5 mm
Ground Brush
R 131 Positive brush , [same dimensions,different 'lead']
Not positive of these but it may help..

Re: alternator rebuild kit

FYI -

The front bearing is 40mm OD 17mm ID and 12 mm wide
I'm not sure about the rear bearing specification, But I've never seen a rear bearing fail and it is easy to repack with fresh grease while the thing is apart.

I'm mostly concerned with cleaning it all up, replacing the front bearing, repacking the rear bearing and replacing the brushes. I'll also polish the brass rings the brushes ride on to help prolong brush life.

I'd like to do this without spending more than $20.00. According to the website posted above the parts are rediculacly cheap wholesale. You can get the bearing, brushes and voltage regulator for under $8.00. You dont even need any special tools to install the parts it is so simple. If everyone knew it was this simple nobody would ever buy a rebuilt alternator.

Then you find the same kit on Ebay and it is $38.00 plus shipping. Nearly 500% markup, what a joke.

Re: alternator rebuild kit

Thanks for that info.. there's no # on the bearing that you can see?
Yes that 85 cents was for the brushholder AND brushes... I imagine brushes alone are like pennys.. ahh we need a source..
The bearings should be readily available.. a 'brush kit' would be nice..
I agree the fleabay item is a ripoff price.. but better than buying an alternator.. it's the only source I found, and I spent some time looking..
