JakeRobb 05-19-2006, 09:55 PM ... since I got a digital camera.
Also for the first time this season. I had forgotten how awesome the paint is on this thing. All I did was wash with Dawn and dry it. Tomorrow it's getting Z7, claybar, and a few coats of polish. :D
Check these out.

eagleknight97 05-20-2006, 01:11 AM Out of curiosity, what kind of gas mileage do you get from that thing? BTW, awesome car!
grandnational007 05-20-2006, 02:46 AM yeah, the wifes car...
just like the time i bought the gf a glock 17 for her birthday
JakeRobb 05-20-2006, 08:44 AM Thanks for all the compliments. :D
It gets 24mpg pretty much all the time (city / highway), if you can stay out of the throttle. In boost, it's more like 15, but that's hard to measure accurately.
And yes, it really is my wife's car. She drives it more than I do, and it was my present to her on our first anniversary. She named her Betty (as in the song, Black Betty).
JakeRobb 05-20-2006, 08:54 AM My wife wants me to make sure everyone knows that it's the original 1987 paint job. :D
Yeah, she's proud of it.
The other day she was filling it up at the gas station. I wasn't with her, but she told me this story. The guy at the next pump over is filling up his 3-series or something like that and keeps eyeing the GN with this doubting look.
"So, you gotta put premium in that?"
Her response was classic:
"Yeah, but that's because I have the 93 octane chip in it right now. I have an 87 octane chip. I also have a 108 chip, but that's really only useful at the drag strip."
"Huh?"
She then hopped in the car and, from what I can tell, practically blew the tires off pulling on to the street.
Yup, she's a keeper!
Fuels94TA 05-20-2006, 11:33 AM Sweet looking car Bro, one lucky wife. I sure as hell miss mine.

1stls1 05-21-2006, 11:22 AM Nice car, looks great! I'm glad you said you were going to polish the car. A simple reminder to everyonr, you DON'T you detergent soap(dawn, palmolive ect....)!! Those household soaps remove the wax on your car. Just a friendly PSA.;)
SiDeWaYZz28 05-21-2006, 11:12 PM damm is that original paint??lookin hella clean mayne..double thumbs up!!

You have obviously never read the Zaino instructions. Sal recommends that the first time you do the car, you wash it with Dawn (specifically, he says liquid dawn, original scent). This removes the wax on your car so that the engineered optics in Zaino polish can work their magic on your paint.

Hehehehe... my wife is going to like that one. :)
Patrick Davies 05-22-2006, 11:02 AM Super nice car, I've always loved Grand Nationals.
If that is the original paint, you should be extremely proud of it. A significant number of Grand Nationals (I've heard) were repainted under warranty, due to real problems with the original paint. I've seen several recently where the paint was flaking off in big chunks on the hood and roof. One was for sale, in fair mechanical condition, for $5000, mainly due to the condition of its paint. The once glossy black was now flat grey, with big areas of primer now exposed. The car looked awful. I thought about buying it, but it would need at least $5000 to paint it properly, and the interior needed work too.
From what I understand, a lot of GM cars of the era suffered from poor paint, due to a new water-borne paint process, due to environmental regulations at the time. I've seen paint flaking off mid 80's Celebritys, Astro vans and S10/15 pickups too.
JakeRobb 05-22-2006, 11:16 AM Yup, original paint. We are very proud of it, but I can't take the credit. We bought it from the original owner last summer; he worked on the G-body line where the car was built, and took fabulous care of it.
Part of the paint problem with GNs is that the torque tends to flex the body panels. Ours has an X-brace behind the rear seat to minimize body flex, and a tie-down strap on the engine to minimize torque transfer.
