Will Chevy build a Cobalt convertible?

Like the title says. I was driving home tonight and saw a Sunfire vert and a Cavalier vert with their tops down within a few miles of driving, which got me wondering about this. Anyone hear anything? It seemed to me the last J-body convertibles sold "well enough" to justify it....

i sure hope not, i don't think they would sell too well.

I have seen plenty of Cavalier verts. What makes you think a Cobalt vert wouldn't sell?

maybe it's just the area, but i rarely see them here in southern california, plus wouldn't an SS convertible be like $27,000? just throwing a price out there, i really don't know

I bet a Cobalt SS convertible would have to be at least $27,000.

I had a '97 Cavalier convertible and it was over 20k new.

Sales were very slow on Cavalier/Sunfire toward the end of their run. Not enough to justify keeping the model in production.

I don't think we'll see a Cobalt convertible, though. If they were planning one, it would likely be available by now. The last Cavalier redesign had the convertible in the program from the beginning and it was available shortly after launch. I would think if they'd wanted this for the Cobalt they would have done the same.

I'd just get the G6 Hardtop Convertible that's already in that price range if I were looking for a convertible...

I dont think there will be a $6,000 cost for a convertible.


But Gm will have the Sky and Solstice in that price range as well as the G6.

Back in the late 80s eairly 90s it seemed like you could get a covertible on anything: K-cars; Jbodies; Fbodies; hell, even geo metros had convertibles some years.

Mini Cooper convertible is $4,500 more than coupe.
Mustang V6 convertible is $4,825 more than the V6 Coupe.
PT Cruiser convertible is $5,405 more than sedan.
2002 Z28 convertible was $7,095 more than coupe.
Corvette convertible is $7,700 more than coupe.
BMW 325 convertible is $7,300 more than coupe.

So even on the low end - a $4,000 premium, I think you'd be looking at 25-26k which is getting up there for the economy compact segment.

I agree with the idea with getting a hardtop convertible G6 at that price as well. I just didn't know how much they costed in the first place to compare. I've driven both and I like the G6 (hardtop) soooo much more.

On a side note, I was thinking of what a Neon convertible would look like, gave me a good chuckle.

A base G6 convertible starts at $28,490 according to Pontiac's website. I'm guessing $30,000+ stickers would be the norm at the dealership.

I see what you guys are saying though. Maybe a $24,000-$25,000 economy convertible doesn't make much sense. You could certainly see an LS vert for just under $20,000 I would think. That could make for a fun, economical little car for those on a strict budget. :think:

I agree with you there, an LS vert could probably start in 20k range and wouldn't be a bad choice for those who needed 4 seats. I might consider one at that price point, actually.
