Cooling fans running continuosly.

I have a 1995 z28 camaro. Both cooling fans run continuosly when the air control **** is in any position other than OFF.By air control **** I mean the rotary switch you use to select AC,HEATER,DE-MISTER settings etc.
If I start the car with the switch set in OFF position the car warms up,both cooling fans cut in at around 220 and then cut out when temp gauge reads half-way,which is what should happen.
But if I move the air control switch to say AC or a heater function then both cooling fans come on and stay on regardless of engine temperature.
So i'm stuck with either never using the interior heater fuctions or using them and having both cooling fans running non stop, which I suspect will eventually burn out the fan motors.
Does anyone know what is causing this strange problem and how do I fix it?
Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated, regards,Mark.

Re: Cooling fans running continuosly.

There are only 2 positions of the HVAC selector which do not use the A/C compressor: The vent (not labeled A/C) and the Floor. All other selections turn the A/C compressor on, which will activate the cooling fans.

If the fans are running even when the selector is on one of these settings, check to see if the A/C compressor is also turning on.

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,
Yes the fans are running in any position other than OFF.
The AC clutch seems to start up randomly on my car,ie you hear a click and then the AC compressor pulley will run for a few seconds and then stop, even when you have not selected AC,is this normal?
Will check to see if the AC compressor is running when the cooling fans are, thanks for the advice,Mark.

I believe that the fans will turn off once you reach highway speeds, so there may not be as much wear and tear on the motors as you think.
