Critter 04-25-2006, 05:04 PM i've always been into valvoline, but i got crap from a friend for it. what brands are you guys into.
from what i have heard penzzoil and quaker state are the same and they both suck? is this true?
so anyone know the facts on all this. i'm building a new engine and need to figure out what i'm gonna stick with.
95GRNZ 04-25-2006, 05:20 PM Well... There's almost as many good oils as there are users, so be prepared for some varying answers. ;)
So... My choice of oil is fully synthetic Mobil 1 10W30. I know it is not everybody's choice, but I've used it in all my F-bodies since 1999 and never had one single problem supposedly caused by oil.
I'd say as long as you use synthetic oil, you'll do just fine.
2000GTP 04-25-2006, 05:38 PM I use Valvoline in my Grand Prix and don't have any issues with it. In the Camaro, I am using 5W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic.
LT1 POWR 04-25-2006, 05:49 PM I'm useing Mobil 1 0W-40. I like it better that what i was useing (Mobil 1 5w-30).
Seems smoother and quieter.
lastZ 04-25-2006, 07:50 PM AMSoil 5 w 40
robvas 04-25-2006, 08:16 PM Umm I'm using Motorcraft 5W20 since that is what Ford specs. I've used about every oil I can imagine in the past.
stingercamaro 04-26-2006, 08:00 AM Mobil 1 5w 30
+1 :thumb:
Johnny Ray 04-26-2006, 08:08 AM As long as the oil meets the correct American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Category and has both the API Service Category and the ILSAC specifications criteria with the "Starburst" symbol on the bottle, I am good to go regardless of brand name.
brians96Z 04-26-2006, 12:10 PM I use Wolf's Head oil. It really slowed down the "smoking when you start it" problem in my 90 RS. When I had Valvoline in there, it was quite a bit worse. As far as Pennzoil/Quaker State/Wolf's Head oil being crap, I totally disagree. I know several people that have used these brands and never had any problems, even with high miles. Like the above post, people make it a much bigger deal than it really is. As long as it meets the latest API specs (SL or SM), you can bet it will be just fine with proper changes. Just my opinion.

I agree completely, and would add that the owner's manual be strictly observed.
slayerxxx213 04-26-2006, 01:06 PM Mobil 1 5W-30 for me :thumb:
Johnnynsac 04-26-2006, 02:59 PM I've been using Mobil 10w-30. I think it's a bit thicker then 5w-30 but it really isn't cold over here so it should be fine. The reason why I went with 10w-30 is Costco only had that :D .

 10W30 is fine in warm climates.
Critter 04-26-2006, 09:58 PM so all you guys are into the synthetic??? er... that stuff gets costly

You can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 full synthetic at wal-mart for ~$20. That's just like getting one quart for free from auto zone or advanced. I'd say that's not too far off from dino oil either, and well worth it.
Critter 04-26-2006, 10:08 PM your gonna make fun of me but in the past i just take it to wal mart and tell em to put 10-40 valvaline in it and pay the guys 19$...

It's your car. Alot of these guys love there cars so they'll put the best. Do you love your car?

I have thought about it, but haven't made the switch yet. I find it hard to make myself switch when in fact conventional has worked quite well for me. If I do switch it will only be in my LS1. My LO3 in my third-gen has a little bit of oil seepage, and I am sure synthetic would make it worse.
95GRNZ 04-27-2006, 11:22 AM so all you guys are into the synthetic??? er... that stuff gets costly
Depends what "costly" means. ;) I don't think spending ~30 bucks every 5-7K miles gets costly at all.
If your previous oil change at WM cost you 19 bucks, just chip in just another 10 and you'll have synthetic oil in your new engine. Your engine will thank you for that.
If using Mobil 1 or some other synthetic oil, don't even think about getting it changed at a shop. They'll rip you a new one with their additional charges for the oil. I used to do that and it hurt so much each time I went there that I started to do the job myself several years ago.
A pair of ramps and a wrench is all you need. Not a biggie.
DISCLAIMER: It's completely up to you, of course. I am in no way saying that you couldn't get away with just regular dino oil. Synthetic just has a definite edge over it.

well put...
so mobil 1? is this better than royal purple? what weight on a rebuild?
also i am building a new engine. I have heard that it is not good to break it in with synthetic. is this true, if so what do i use in the meantime and for how long.
thanks critter
tcc974 04-27-2006, 01:43 PM I use CASTROL SYN BLEND 10W30 in my 99. It has 123,000 miles and no problems. I also use it in my wife's Jeep and its up to 159,000.
GhostZ28 04-28-2006, 12:36 AM Yeah i've heard the 3 best are 1, royal purple and amsoil 2, mobil and castrol
1FstFormulaV8 04-28-2006, 12:39 AM Mobil 1 5W30. Seems to be the oil of choice.
GhostZ28 04-28-2006, 12:48 AM yeah for the price and quality, cant beat M1, but if you want your car to last a few more miles when you're hammerin the hell outa it, there are some oils that will hold up very well, but cost way too much for practicality
1FstFormulaV8 04-28-2006, 12:49 AM That's all I've put into the Formula since I bought it.
OUTCAST 04-28-2006, 12:59 AM I use 5W -30 Royal Purple synthetic in my cars!
00cls1camaross 04-28-2006, 01:12 AM i have never even seen royal purple
i change mine myself and put 5w-30 mobil 1 synthetic
94_camm 04-28-2006, 07:35 AM <~~~ ROYAL PURPLE
Cerwin Vega Fan 04-28-2006, 11:00 PM Previous owners used Castrol 10w30, at 80 K I switched over to Royal Purple 10w30 and never looked back.

I would use plain old 40 weight, changed every 500 miles until 1500 miles, then switch to Mobil-1 5w30 Synthetic.

I wouldnt do that... I used to work for them and they would forget the most simple ****, like the filter:rolleyes: or they would cross thread the drain plug/filter, and besides that they use ****ty filters. One time they forgot to put oil in a suburban, and we only found out because the guy came back in and I ran out with some oil and filled it for him (shop was already closed). So if you dont care about stuff like that then go ahead, I would NEVER trust my car to them, or any break/lube place.

i would rather do it myself but during the winter i take it to walmart. after the rebuild no one's touching my car.
