How many miles are you on when you get to a quarter tank?

I'm wanting to compare my gas mileage to what you guys are getting, modded or stock, whatever you have. I'm only getting about 153 miles on my car when it gets to a quarter tank left on the guage. What are you guys getting?

i cant say.. cuz my fuel gauge goes about a 1/4 past the full mark.. so i fill up when the car is "half" empty.. does anyone els have that problem?

gas milage is 27.8 highway and around 21-23 city.. (1993 camaro z/28 with 147xxx on it)

Yup, I can pin it past the "full" mark and stays there for about 60 miles..last time the needle was waving around the "1/2 tank" mark, it was 240 miles later. :D

My 1/4 tank has about 200 miles on it. I usually don't let it get past that.

Mine is so messed up that 1/4 tank is a little over ONE gallon!

I don't let mine get under the 1/2 mark, and at that point I'm at about 180-190 miles. However it should be better, because I'm only getting about 18 mpg, down from around 20 mpg.

I don't go by the fuel gauge much. When the tripmeter gets to 200 I fill up. It takes between 9 and 10 gallons.

Yea, my gauge does the same thing. It's because the gas tanks are shaped like a V, so when you fill up, it takes longer for the float to come down as there is more volume at the top. Once the fuel starts to drain, it drains quickly as there isn't as much volume.

I can get 250-280 from full full to fumes, going easy/daily driving. 280 is stretching it further than i wanted, and i'm glad i made it, but would never do it again!! My trip meter has since broken, but when the fuel gauge gets to half, i usually fill up.

Easy reference for fuel gauge:

Way past full = Full
Full = 3/4 tank
Half = 1/3 tank.. better fuel up
1/4 = find a gas station NOW

I at alittle under half a tank and have 160ish miles on it so far.
I've run it down to the red line once. I wasnt thinking that the fuel pump is cooled be the fuel. Wont do that again.

I hate that it drops like a rock after 1/2:mad:

I get about 270 or so when their is 1/4 tank left, I never run it way down.

What I hate is I always think i'm on fumes and I really only took 11 gallons meaning their is still 4 gallons in the tank that barely register!

I got just under 25mpg last fill up, but I go by the trip gauge mostly, 260+ I start looking for a gas station.

Same here. 300 miles on average per tank but that is mostly highway driving. 260 time to fill up and 300 find a gas station only a gallon or so left.

My gas gage is unreliable as the rest with most of my tank falling above full so when it gets below full it is time to fill up.

A little over half a tank and I'm usually around 160 or 170. Then it plummets and a quarter tank left is between 195 and 215. Ends up being between 12-13 gallons when I fill up. It's an '02 Z28 with 25k miles and just has lid, k&n, and catback.

this weekend i did some mixed driving.

filled up just a hair under 1/4 tank, and was a 284 miles.

the driving was about 100 miles of mid-day miami traffic, 100 miles of 75mph highway, and the last 80ish was crappy 30-40mph small beach town city driving.

all this was with the TTops off and 2 people in the car.

when i refilled i got 23.3mpg  i was happy...hard to beat 450hp and consistent 20+ mpg milage

I am at about 120miles when I only have about a quarter tank of gas left.

Is it more fuel effecient to keep your gas level low, or keep your gas level high? I've heard people say either way.

from the engine standpoint...it shouldn't matter one way or the other.

if you take into account the added weight of the gas in the tank...theoretically it would be better to stay low.

but think of how many quick stops you'd have to make if you kept the car at 1/4 tank...the extra start ups and idling in the gas station would offset the miniscule advantages of weight saving

ok my car has been absolutely TERRIBLE on gas mileage since i bought it...i get maybe 150 miles to an entire tank if im lucky...and no i dont have a hole in my tank...anyone have any suggestions as to y it would be that bad??

GhostZ28
04-25-2006, 07:55 PM
Yeah, thats what I always thought, and ya know 10 gallons of gas weighs ALOT, so its good weight reduction...

But someone once told me that it makes the fuel system work a little harder, and then something else about pressure buildup with the extra empty space, i dont really know thats why i was asking if anyone heard more about that i'm talkin about

have you done a basic tune up?

fuel filter, plugs wires, and most of all....o2 sensors?

after all they are what determine the a/f ratio

GhostZ28

I.... have not lol. I was going to wait and get O2 sims when I do my headers this summer.

i have replaced plugs, wires, coil, opti, but not the fuel filter or o2 sensors...i am however getting a tune by madz28 soon...and havin the rear o2's disabled...do u think i will se better mpg after the tune??
