3ohm impedance with midbass driver?

First off, is that an ok speaker to use in the sail panels? Main purpose is rear fill and for some mid bass. Also, is a 3 ohm impedance ok? My amp is rated for 4 ohm and 2 ohm, but doesnt say about 3 ohm. These are the only speakers ive seen rated 3 ohm, so i guess its not normal.

I run those same drivers under the Audiobahn name off a Kicker 600.4 amp and they are awesome speakers.

First, you'll need to drill and tap new mounting holes; those speakers have 8 mounting screws instead of 8.

I also suggest filling the upper and lower part of the sail panel with fiber-fill (Pillow filling available at walmart for cheap) to create a somewhat enclosure with the fill being the top and bottom. The speakers are very deep and JUST clear the outside body panel on my car, and should on your too.

These are GREAT fill for inbetween the fronts and subs, and I won't go without another 6.5" driver again. Even some of the more name-brand 6.5" drivers don't have the travel needed to hit the fill in notes.

So the 3-ohm load isnt a problem for the amp? Also, if I got 60watts at 4ohms, what would i be getting at 3ohms?

These do not come with a crossover; it must be handled externally; either within the amp or with an external pre-amp.

With a 60W @4 ohms (Be sure it is 2 ohm stable or do NOT use it; you will most likely blow the amp if the amp is not rated for 2 ohm usage); that amp should be rated for 120W @ 2 ohms; thus 3 ohms equals out to be about 90W. I'm running mine off of a 75@ @ 4 ohms (Kicker KX600.4) with no problems; have been for 3 years.

There is nothing wrong with the speakers being 3 ohms. As long as they are not less than the minimum speaker impedance recommended by the amp you can use them. They could be 16 ohm speakers and they would be perfectly OK. If they were only 1 ohm it would be a different story.

Thanks guys, I think im gonna be pickin up a pair of these, but im trying to decide how to filter them. I cant use my head unit, and my amp only has a Low pass or High pass filter, neither of which has tons of range. How do those plug in filters they sell at Crutchfield work? Or what are some other, kinda cheap ideas?

F-Mods are junk and a waste of money. Car Sound did an article on them and they tested VERY poorly. They only had a slope of 6dB/octave rather than their claimed 12dB/octave and their corner frequencies were way off their advertised values. In short... don't waste your time on them,.

I agree, a low pass is not needed on those speakers, nor any other full range speakers. Leave them out or you will be very dissapointed.

Low pass is utilized best on subwoofers, or dedicated mid-bass drivers. Component systems have their own crossover systems.

Those arent full range speakers, they are mid-bass drivers, which is why I was wondering about the low pass. I could just send them a full signal, but that would probably sound pretty muddy, correct?

Yea, ya got me on that one, you're right.

In that case, 500hz is probably a bit too restrictive for those drivers. Try the variable crossover on the amp for a while, see how you like it.

Like I stated before, I do not run a top-cut-off, and mine sound great. They roll-off naturally and to me do an awesome job at filling in the correct frequency range. I just run them high-passed at ~100Hz

Honestly, I thought I had them band-passed, after looking at my "old" system (Which I completely removed a little while ago), I'm not 100%.

I know for a fact they were high-passed at 100Hz, but I'm not sure about the low-pass. I don't believe i was running one unless it was set through my HU which I don't remember if I did.

Been a while since I've been in my car, and about 3 years since I set the old system up.
