Assuming you have the factory installed positraction you can test the cone tension by using the method above.

As said above, consistent straight line one wheel peels indicate the cone is no longer providing good friction. If a right turn peel just leaves rubber on the inside of the arc then then the cone is getting weak.

If you are hearing noises and are sure they are coming from the axle then it is more likely a bearing or gear. The best way to inspect this is to securely raise the car with rear wheels hanging and rotating the wheels by hand. You can check the universal joints too. Pull the rear end plate and look at the internals. Chipped and broken gears as well as excessive material in the bottom of the housing will be obvious if the differential is self destructing.
