dacook 03-31-2006, 02:03 PM I've been thinking about the question raised in the GTO thread; namely whether to buy the first year, or wait and see what upgrades there are.
I am definitely going to buy, and have already started making payments into a bank account.
So I thought a poll would be fun to see what everyone else's inclinations are.
I'm thinking of the 1st gens fo e.g.; came out '67 but the '69 is generally regarded as the peak, then downhill with the second gen in '70. Also when Chevelle came out the best engine was the 327, then a few years later you could get a 454.
So 35 years from now will an '09, '10, or '11 be the epitome of 5th gens?
I'm thinking maybe wait and see....
stars1010 03-31-2006, 02:17 PM I'm waiting for the vert in the 2nd year
Bradl1982 03-31-2006, 02:36 PM I'm going to buy one the first year and if they make any drastic changes for the 2nd year model then I'll trade mine in on one. Probably not the brightest thing to do but I've waited too long for a new camaro!
MasterEvilAce 03-31-2006, 02:47 PM Probably everyone is going to want to wait and pickup the best model, but if that happens, the Camaro is doomed, since nobody will buy it when it comes out, what's the driving force to keeping it alive?
HAZ-Matt 03-31-2006, 02:59 PM I am so far the only person that said I am not going to buy one. But if I was I would see what would be offered the second or third year.
97Whitez28 03-31-2006, 02:59 PM The second they annouce a Z/28 option, I will be at the dealer putting my name down with some cash......
JasonD 03-31-2006, 03:08 PM Buy immediately. No question about it. Then I will trade up later.
Here's the thing...if you want a better one to come along, don't wait if you can help it. If everyone didn't buy the 1st year, there would be no reason to make a 2nd year. 2002 wasn't very long ago...
5thgen69camaro 03-31-2006, 03:37 PM Z28 400hp 2nd year would be ideal after 1st year kinks and dealer markups hopefully
GRNcamaro 03-31-2006, 03:56 PM im not buying one i refuse to part with the camaro i have now and i cant afford to have 2 camaros " remember your camaro is your freind". plus im not all the big on the new camaros but mabe that will change when i see them when they hit the show room floors
4thGenRS 03-31-2006, 04:24 PM Not buy at all unfortunately. I already have 2 4th gen's that I love already, and plan to hopefully keep them all my life. Very excited to hear about the new camaro, but I already have mine. Plan to move on to buying a house next year so no new cars for a while.
Now if I come across a LARGE sum of money....well...you know... first in line!
Mike2001SS 03-31-2006, 05:28 PM I put down second year because I want a vert which will not be out first year but will deside after a chat with Scott in Atlanta.
Discgolf 03-31-2006, 08:25 PM The REAL question is how "modifyable" they will make it! If you can buy a V8 the first year and can modify it very easily...engine, intake, cam, forced induction, etc.....why wait until the next year when more than likely your mods will blow away the next upgrade "level"? That is the whole definition of a Camaro!
toegead93 04-01-2006, 01:55 PM I'd buy the first year with an A6 unless they make the LS-8 GT500 killer. Then I'll have to wait to get that. Although, I don't think I'll be able to wait that long to buy a new car. My car is already a teenager at 13 years old. So I might buy the first year and then trade up once it comes out (GM better make it).
number77 04-01-2006, 02:18 PM I would wait.
1. dealer's are gonna be marking stuff up
2. I probably won't be getting what I want in the first year because dealers are gonna know they can sell it to someone without a hassle, while I will be looking for a car with the stuff I want, nothing extra! They most likely won't want to deal with me.
3. GM will probably start throwing out incentives....and I'd be pissed if they did it after I bought my car. (how many times have they said "this is the last time")
4. I want to see how well these cars mod. I will be watching this board and others very closely the first year to see if the engine is a dud, or a stud. If it is sensitive to mods, I'll really want the car, if it isn't, I will just keep waiting...
5. * **** ** ******* *** *** ****.
CLEAN 04-01-2006, 03:12 PM 2 things that would keep me from buying right away are GM's inability to offer a full lineup the first year of top performer, vert, and base level cars. Also, I will never, ever pay more than MSRP for a car, no way. So iffff they came out w/ the top dog the first year, and iffff I could get it w/out dealer greed, then I would look seriously at it, but from what I understand, the model that I want won't be available the first year, plus I have little faith that the dealers will be able to contain themselves when it comes to markups on the V8 cars. Just look at the '05 Mustang GT's when they were new. If I need something to get me by until then, I'll get a C5 Z06 or something.
toegead93 04-01-2006, 03:32 PM Good point on the dealer mark-up, it will keep me from buying the top dog as soon as it comes out. It seems most hot cars are markep up 5-8K, and the Z06 I've seen as high as 20K. How much business do mark-ups take away? I guess for everyone of us that won't pay the mark-up there's someone else who will.
JB'z 94 04-01-2006, 07:28 PM If I was in the market I would be buying first year.. On alot of things in the past it was better to wait, but the way GM has been putting out cars lately it seems to me that you don't have much to worry about unless you want more power..
Brandon_Lutz 04-02-2006, 11:49 AM Depends on when it comes out. I have a year left on my truck loan, and if I have it paid off by then, I will wait about 6 months to save up for a good down payment.
Morginie 04-03-2006, 10:09 AM I've learned my lesson many times, wait a year before you buy it. Something gets fixed or improved, price drops, or a new model that you would have wanted comes out.
Jim85IROC 04-04-2006, 02:20 PM For me it'll depend on what the Corvette does.
GM always puts the new motor in the Corvette a year earlier than the f-body. If GM puts a new motor in the Corvette the same year that the Camaro comes out, I'll wait a year. If the Corvette and the Camaro have the same motor in the Camaro's first year, I'll probably get one provided I can find a dealer with enough class to sell it at sticker.
I'd either buy a late first year, or the very first of the 2nd year.
I'm glad I waited on my Colorado and got the '05 in Sept. '04 I know a dealer that will sell to me for $100 over invoice. There were some little changes to the truck for '05 that made me glad I went year 2.
Still Lookin 04-05-2006, 07:37 PM realistically i wont be able to afford it right out of the gate but if i could i would wait 2 or 3 years, heres why
i dont want an engine upgrade like the first year gto or SSR
i would like to see them get some recalls out of the way
got to keep an eye out for a great deal, no point in rushing
im counting on the camaro being around for a long time:D
Red89GTA 04-08-2006, 12:18 AM Wait till they get the kinks worked out, so 2nd or 3rd year. Assuming I'm in the market of course.
DrewSG 04-08-2006, 05:15 AM I'm going to wait till I can use my GM card to it's fullest.
Bert02SS 04-10-2006, 02:05 PM I'm going to wait till I can use my GM card to it's fullest.
I found out, to my great disappointment, that when buying a C6, for example, the most discount you can get off your GM card is $1,000. Even if you have way more "credits" on it. I would imagine that will be a limit on the amount of discount for the new Camaro, as well. Pi$$ed me off!
DriverJ 04-10-2006, 03:21 PM buying a 2nd year so they can work the kinks out of the first year ;-)
Ron78Z&01SS 04-11-2006, 01:11 AM I think more than likely the dealers will make my mind up for me. Look at the way they tacked on "desirability fees" (or something along those lines) ON TOP of the retail price of the first year of the C5, C6, now the C6 Z06 Corvettes.
I would be extremely surprised if they didn't do the same for the 5th Gen. These things are going to be desirable, you can count on dealer greed raising its head the first year or two.
My guess would be at least $5000 extra. If that does end up being the case, no thanks, I'll wait.

As I understand, it's always been 1000-1500 for the Corvettes. But I can't see such a limitation being put on a mass-produced car like the Camaro. I'd at least hope for around 2000.
