GM Doraville as the place of production?

I have been hearing rumors all over the map about where this car might be built one of which really excited me and for a darn good reason.

Canada seems to be the most abundant but I have seen several times that GM Doraville will be the plant of choice. I live within 10 minutes of this plant, and thought that they were producing the Montana Minivans as well as the Chevy Venture. I guess with the tides of change maybe those products are no longer being produced and that leaves the possibility for the plant to get a make over and re tooling for the new F-body.

Honestly that would seem to me to be a great local for the car to be built seeing as how GMMG is right down the road.

At any rate if that ends up being the where the car is built I will be at the plant the day my car is built and hopefully get to be the first person to drive it after it rolls of the assembly line. They really ought to think about doing the party that they do at Bowling Green for the new Corvette owners reguardless of where it is built.


So share your thoughts, I am always interested to see what others have found or happened across.

I wouldn't say for sure that they aren't going to retool the place but like you said it doesn't look to likely that it will happen. I guess we are going to have to sit back and see what happens.

Not saying it won't happen, but highly unlikely. The Doraville plant is the oldest GM plant still in operation today, so I don't see them dumping money into it, but who knows.

You know I have been in that plant several times and I can vouch for the fact that it definatly is old....maybe they should film a horror movie there, atleast that is what I thought the first time I went in the plant and walked around. One thing I thought was super cool was the body panel Stamping machine....that sucker was the size of a football field in every direction.

Doraville isn't in consideration for Camaro or any Zeta car.

Oshawa is probally the 90% choice now. The decisions have already been made, but haven't passed my way yet (probally wouldn't be able to talk when it does), but one proposal had Wilmington making the coupes.

There is no "where" questions anymore, though I'm sure every plant and surrounding community has their own rumor mill.

The only real suspense right now is "are the Zetas going to be split between Wilmington and Oshawa, or is everything going to Oshawa, while Wilmington is used for something else".

Hey Guy, If Oshawa isnt slated to end Monte Carlo and Impala production until CY 09 what does this mean for the timeframe we might see a new Camaro? It seems like it would push it back quite alot. Even if they did end the current models a year early they would still have to convert the plant to the new models and I'm sure they'd be in more of a hurry to get out the high volume Impala before a new Camaro.

Yes, you're right. My dad worked at Doraville for 30 years, and for the last ten years worked in the stamping plant, and I have got to taken a tour a couple of times. He always talked about when they put that stamping press in, how far they dug down to secure it, the thing sounds like thunder when it strikes the dye.

There's 2 plants at Oshawa making W's.

One is closing at the end of the 2008 model run.

The 2008 model run can end sooner than summer 2008.

There is a projected timeframe on change over, but I gave my word I wouldn't post it till much later.

Though all info is saying Oshawa for the entire zeta line, the time frames I have don't match

That's why I'm still saying Wilmington for at least the Camaro, with the larger Zeta coupes and sedans going to Oshawa the following year.

I may be proven wrong, but I'm sticking with this forecast for now. ;)

Looks like some U.S. plants are going to get new crossover vehicles. GM sees a dogfight with the Japanese, who are to invading the SUV/truck market with a new onslaught. Zeta looks more and more like it's going to Oshawa.

Should be interesting to hear announcements. I expect to hear about the decision soon. GM can't afford to waste time.

I say let the Japs have the Cross over vehicles...that way their economy can fall through the floor when people stop buying them soon. The SUV market is in the decline it is a Fad that is dying and I definately wouldn't want to be on board when that ship goes down.

What is the point of a crossover anyway? I really have a hard time telling the difference... so called crossovers like the Chrysler Pacifica seem *almost* as big and heavy and clunky as SUVS and even visually I don't see much difference.

Personally I would prefer a true car based, uni-body sport wagon of some sort for hauling my musical equipment around, since it won't all fit in a sedan or coupe. A sport tuned performance wagon that handles and accelerates like a large car with a torquey V8 with would fit the bill. The only domestic that comes close is the Dodge Magnum but I truly detest the crappy styling. Since America doesn't really dig or make hi-perf wagons, I suppose I'm going to have to go Euro.

Crossovers fill the position of what stationwagons used to.

SUVs cost about the same price as well equpted cars, and the feeling that you got "more for your money". SUVs got an added boost when people began to believe that trucks lasted longer and were more durable.

People don't want to give up the versitility of SUVs but want something with better fuel economy, so Crossovers are coming in.


Anyone who thinks SUVs are dead aren't paying attention. SUV sales have dropped, but they were selling in astronomical numbers to begin with. SUVs still have insane profit margins, so even with the sales drop, they are still making money. The problem is that automakers based their spending on income fromk these things, and now they are hurting.

Finally, Crossovers are the wave of the future of the SUV market. It was Vans in the 70s, minivans in the 80s and 90s, SUVs in the 90s to today, and crossovers are taking center stage now. Even the ugly Pontiac Aztek sold slightly more than the Dodge Magnum does. Aztek is a sales failure because the volume those types of vehicles sell at is astronomical. Magnum is a success because as a versatile car (though classified as a truck), the numbers are pretty good.

That could be due to the Magnum's strong resemblance to a hearse...

Coming at you, the Magnum is an attractive car. Until you see the side and rear views anyway.
