This may have been discussed, maybe not...

But did this concept really come out in 99?
Just look at the rooflines, the side windows, the pillars, the curvy rear fenders, hell the whole car...looks like the camaro concept to me.

It DID come out in 99, I remember seeing it my senior year of HS. It does look a lot like the Camaro concept but ask yourself how long has GM been working on/changing the 5th gen Camaro's design?

I may be wrong but I think this concept was some sort of contest between GM designers to re-create the GTO. Like I said, I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading that in a magazine.

The guy who designed it...by his own admission.....had NEVER heard of the GTO before he started this project.

Way before the last 4th gen rolled off the line:D

I don't particularly care for it. Way too much body panel, too much bumper... If they even considered building something like that they would be a joke.

That's how your Camaro concept once was. Now look at it now and see how it evolved.
That's the point of a 'Concept'.

Concept is way overused on this site.
The GTO was a design exercise. :)

Technically isn't the Camaro a design exercise?

Well i guess the GTO was the exercise, and the camaro is the concept/probable finished product.
I know about all of the issues that kept the camaro name unspeakable the last few years, but the thing i don't understand is, how could they have had so much work done so long ago and still be so far away from production. I'm not complaining at all, i love the new car, just wish it were available within the next year.
Anyone know if the 99 gto was on an actual structure or was it just a mock up?

I believe it was made of foam. The idea was that if built it could have shared the f-body chassis. Kind of interesting that the Camaro shares a toned down similarity in shape to this car.

And IIRC, it was done completely on computers.
