Frozen A/C Compressor won't let me start!!!

Has anyone ever heard of this? The a/c compressor clutch froze up and wont let the motor turn over, itll turn a notch and then you hear a loud screech from the belt and the starter basically stalls and wont turn the motor anymore. i didnt think the a/c pulley could put that much drag on a motor but it seems like it is.
does anyone know how far i could drive if i cut the belt off? i would be drivin on the battery only. its an optima redtop though so i think i could get somewhere. id like to get a mile or so away to a shop where i could get it fixed without having to have the car towed.

just unplug the clutch on the side of the compressor, and it should fix the problem enought to allow you to start and safely drive the car. I had almost the same problem when my a/c compressor locked up. I just unpluged it so I drive the car until I get get around to fixing it.

i thought unplugging the unit was the same as having the a/c and defrost off.

pull the belt, a mile will be no problem with any halfway good battery

and yes, if the bearing in the A/C compressor pulley siezes, the engine will not start(alt. and P/S will do the same), the starter is not strong enough

compressor might be fine, just in need of a new clutch/pulley assm.

Yeah, just take the belt off. Thats your best bet.

LOL... welcome to gross horsepower.
You can make it quite a long way with an LT1 w/ no belt since the water pump isn't driven by it. W/ an optima and no accessories on, it could be a very long way...
