getting my exhaust legal....

Gotta question, I have a 95 z28 with mac midlength headers, mac Y-pipe, offroad pipe with cutout welded into it, back out a edlebrock exhaust. Now obviously I have no cat. I need to get my car inspected and Im sure there not gunna pass me when I show up in the lanes and they take the mirror and look for the cat. What would be my best and least expensive way about putting a cat back on. I live in delaware and we dont go to a mechanic we got to the DMV. I was either thinking about getting another cat and another offroad pipe and welding it in then unbolting the old offroad then bolting in the one with the cat so it would be interchangable if I ever needed it again. Or would just having a cat welded in behind the offroad pipe and whenver I wanted to I could just uncap the cutout out and run an open exhaust. Also would i need a highflow cat or something not stock to have welded in since my exhaust is no longer stock diameter? Or would a decent shop have no problem welding a cat into my aftermarket setup.

P.S. I also have the AIR and EGR removed so even if they dont look for the cat im sure im gunna fail the emissions test. Probably not by alot but im sure i probably will. THe original cat was hollowed out when i first ran i threw and it had no problems at all so im sure with a cat on there the emissions should be fine. Thanks alot for responses.

Seeing as you have the Mac Y-pipe it should have a ball style joint with the two bolts where it meets the off-road pipe. The Edelbrock catback should also have a 2 bolt flange to meet up with (normally) the stock cat but in your case the off-road pipe.

The Mac off-road pipe is designed to directly replace the stock cat when switching to the Mac Y-pipe, so your set up should have required no welding to put together (apart from your cut-out that you've welded into the off-road pipe).

You should be able to get a direct bolt in cat to fit between the Y-pipe and the Edelbrock catback with no welding required.

As for the cat, any 3" in/out one will do just as long as it has the bolt-on flanges at either end. When you've passed the inspection, you can unbolt it and put your cutout back on. Then you can either keep the cat for next time or sell it.

On a side note, the exhaust setup you have is exactly what I want to get. Can I ask your opinions on the Edelbrock catback compared to other brands sound/quaility etc...

hey thanks for the advice, me and my buddy actually did the headers, y-pipe and offroad pipe and your right there are flanges, i guess i didnt realize that a cat would just bolt up that was also flanged, i guess that makes me live alot easier. As for the exhaust, i really like the mac midlengths they werent that hard to install and i can def. feel the difference, i also could tell once i put them on that the exhaust was louder and sounded as it started at the engine not just out the back. The edlebrock exhaust is porbably about 10 years old and still sounds good. Its not too loud and obnoxious but is loud enough, i just open the cutout when i want it to be really loud which i do sometimes. The edlebrock is pretty cheap too, and i bought my whole header system used for $150 so there's def. deals out there. I def. would reccomend my setup, if i can ill try to get some sound clips of my car for ya. Thanks again.
