engine will not turn over

what should i do? any suggestions? i turn key on and will not turn over. the security light comes on. fuel pump turns on and all that.

Absolutely no attempt to crank? Most likely dead battery but also the possability of a starter... Check all your cables and make sure they're tight and check your grounds especially...

went back outside and started right up. no when it would not turn over it did nothing. no clicking or anything. just the sound of the fuel pump pumping and the door dinging<cuz i didnt have it shut all the way.

Definately a loose connection somewhere, check all your grounds, Battery Connection, Alt Connect...

my dad says it may be the clutch switch????/could that be it also?

That actually could be a possability I never considered as I only driven A4's but yet that could be!...

Did the security light stay on once you pulled the key back out of the ignition?

If so, the chip in the key could be worn, causing it to not read correctly sometimes.

I agree. You said the security light stayed on... its supposed to go out after 5 seconds according to the book. I had it happen to me once and so far it hasn't happened again. It is usually the chip on the key but could be the lock or the module. One way to not ever have to worry about the chip in the key.. and so you can make copies of it at a hardware store withoput a chip is to find out what resistance the chip is in the key. Its not actually a computer chip, just a resistor. The computer looks to see if the right resistence is read and then decides to let it start or not. Radio shack will sell you the resistor.... they have a kit i believe so you can remote start these cars. Without the key in it there has to be that resistor. Now the are two very small guage wires coming out of the steering column and going back into it. It has a connector under the dash. I believe these wires are yellow. I'm not sure since I have tried it yet but I think all you have to do is put that resistor somewhere in that system.
