Are all power steering pumps created equal?

I've searched the archives here from top to bottom and I couldn't find any threads that addressed this. I'm trying to find out the differences, (besides appearance), between the different "generations" of power steering pumps that GM has made through the years. In relation to the type I pump, are the type II and type III pumps "better" in some way? Do they pump a higher volume of fluid? Hold more pressure?

To be more specific, I'd like to know if there is any reason why an old Saginaw keyway style pump couldn't be utilized in an LTx or even an LSx car. (Taking into account that the correct bracketry was used and there was sufficient space to accomodate one.)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Nobody knows this? Does anybody at least know if a Type I Saginaw pump will work on a 93-02 F-body steering rack?

I think the quality of GM power steering pumps went downhill somewhere along the line, 'cause the pump blew (the shaft broke) in my Dad's 2000 Sierra, with about ~120k on it, while the pump on our old '89 Sierra was still working fine even with ~275k, and we've never had a problem with a pump EVER on any of our old F-bodies, or any other GM we've owned. Apparently they've had a few pumps fail on the newer trucks in my Dad's shop as well:rolleyes:. What I DON'T KNOW is whether LS1 F-bodies use the same type of pump as the 5.3L trucks??
