97TransAm 01-27-2006, 11:33 AM So after the trauma of header and exhaust install, two blown header gaskets and two bad spark plug wire crimps I got accustom to my SES lamp always being on. In fact I called it my "Stupercharged Engine System" for those that ask what the illuminated idiot light was.
Somedays I did disconnected the battery for a bit, but the lamp would light up happily and brightly when I was on the PA Turnpike just taking it easy in the right hand lane cruising at a sub 110mph. I do this as a courtesy not to interfere with those speeding at 80mph in the left hand lane. So like I said the lamp is always on.
Well yesterday it went out. WTF?!?!!? I was going to order an AutoTap software with connector to "diagnosis" the problem. How am I going to convince The Carol that I really really REALLLLLLLYYYYY need the $200 present to myself if the SES lamp is off?
Do you think I should take the car to the dealer and ask them to put it back on? How much do you think it would cost for them to un-reset the SES? I need the lamp back on NOW, I'm afraid to drive da car without it lit.
Please respond appropriately...
kazman 01-27-2006, 11:46 AM Tape a flashlight behind the dash. See Carol, its still on even when the car's off so its a real bad problem. I have to get the diag sofware right now. ;)
If you miss the idiot lights just get in my teal car. I have all the idiot lights on, ses, low oil, abs, etc. Makes a nice glow at night. :D
97TransAm 01-27-2006, 12:39 PM Jim!!! What a greta idea! Plus I'll get to use some duct tape taping the flashlight up in the dash. Cool!!!
I know how to get the "low oil" lamp on by saving money on the oil change and just putting three quarts of oil in instead of five, but how did you get the ABS to stay on? I think that would look awesome on my dashbaord.
thanks again...
ron
myslowcamaro 01-27-2006, 01:48 PM tell her the problem is so bad, even the light called it quits:eek:

"Please respond appropriately..." ...you have failed. You are not allowed to post for ninety-seven seconds.
The logic and answer would then be; "No lighty, no breaky. You don't need that AutoCrap gizmo to do whatever. Now go take the trash out and clean up your mess in the basement."
slayer6x6 01-27-2006, 06:27 PM So you want the light on? If you do, just unplug your IAT sensor, O2 sensor, MAF sensor, etc and start the car up.
slayer6x6 01-27-2006, 06:30 PM BTW, the light will go out if the car goes through a certain # of key cycles/miles without the fault occuring again. It will still register as a "stored code" in the pcm.
Was your first post serious?

hey ron, i was just trying to get you a new engine or something;) works on my wife, every little problem..."looks like the ______is about to break, we need a new one soon" :D
with that in mind, my rear is going, and the engine, tranny, maf, intake,....
97TransAm 01-27-2006, 07:35 PM hey Scott... is your car running fine now? I've been out of touch for a bit. I remember something about an intake being a not what it was suppose to be.
"slayer6x6".. this thread is just me being half bored and getting back on the boards after being too dang busy for the past three weeks that I had to schedule a piss-break at work, if you know what I mean. I have had the SES on for a multitude of reasons since the headers were done. Most of the root causes were fixed. I think lately it's an EGR problem. I should have put the block off plate when we were doing the headers but I didn't.... Anways, this thread is more for being humorous than it is to be technically correct. Which is why it's here instead of LT1. That's why Kazman suggest putting the flashight on behind the dash.... hahahahaha.... like, could you imagine driving to the dealership and asking them to "turn the SES back on".... bahahahahaha.

myslowcamaro 01-27-2006, 07:42 PM hey Scott... is your car running fine now? I've been out of touch for a bit. I remember something about an intake being a not what it was suppose to be.
its running . i was telling ryan, about a week after we went to e-town i was at atco and hit 11.8@118. since then the tranny feels funny. i got my money back from the fake ls6 intake and bought some goodies that need to be installed yet. got the 90/90 setup but need to get the maf and bigger lid before i can put them on.
Jeff H 01-27-2006, 07:43 PM Well Ron, my SES light likes to be on most of the time too. It did go out one day and I thought something was wrong. But it came back on the next day so it's running fine. My big worry was that the light would go out and not come back on after I did the longtube header install. Whewwwww, luckily I was wrong and the light came back on!:D And what's even better is that I only had 1 code before and now I have 3 codes to play with! So which code would you like? I have an O2 code, an EGR code and a misfire code. But the confusing part is that the car runs perfectly! Oh well, maybe I need to go melt a spark plug wire or something. I think you need to go and crack a vacuum line to let extra air into the engine. Then your light will come back on. If there's 1 thing I can count on, it's my SES light!:)
Projectz28 01-27-2006, 07:46 PM Hey Ron, I have autotap if you want to check it out. My car used to have lights on all over the place too... then I got smart and took the bulbs out of the guage cluster... I aint got no more problems!!!
BTW, you should keep the $200 and save it for something else.... you know the engine will be out of my car tomorrow;) And I will probably have some parts up for sale in 2 weeks:D
97TransAm 01-27-2006, 08:21 PM Oh oh.... okay. Yeah yeah.... garage sale.... thanks for reminding me. I'll hold off on the Autotap purchase.
Jeff... I think I might just go and loosen the gas cap. That should, hopefully, get my SES back. Thank goodness I have the traction control switch to throw so that I have some indicator lit. I feel nervous without something lit now. Bahahahahaha.
Bow94z 01-27-2006, 09:16 PM Just pull the "Air Pump" fuse out, start the car and within 2min the SES light should be on. Thats the easiest route to go...my car always blows Air pump fuses every so often, so i keep a box of 20amp fuses in my glovebox just to turn that damn SES light off when i dont want it there..in your case the SES sounds like your friend
If not seems like your light is burnt out then.
97TransAm 01-28-2006, 10:55 AM Oh man... I hope the lamp didn't burn out. I'll have to pull that fuse then to check... or pull two spark plug wires so that I get the flashing SES. That's cool around Xmas time....
myslowcamaro 01-28-2006, 11:43 AM hey ron, did you sign up yet for this coming racing season?
97TransAm 01-28-2006, 03:41 PM Uh no. I'm not in the points racing yet. But thanks for reminding me... I still have to renew my number before Feb 8th. ;)
Pampered-Z 01-30-2006, 10:25 AM DANGIT Ron,
You waited so long to get the scanning software that there is so much wrong that now even the computer can't keep track of them all!
So there is only one thing to do! Start replacing random parts until the conputer can start setting SES light again.
1) replace cam, lifter, valve springs and rocker arms.
2) replace torque convertor
3) replace throttle body
If the car still doesn't throw a code, we've have to pull and port the heads!
Sorry, but that's what happens when you keep drive a car with the SES light on.
I hope you learn from this!!!!!!!!!1

97TransAm 01-30-2006, 10:44 AM Bahahahahahahaha.... rotflmao....
That was good and most appropriate response.
Well I'll start with number 1. The Projectz28-97TA project was being discussed this very weekend. Looks like the cam is a go. I'll get new springs. We're still figuring out the rockers.
Considering that most of the stuff on the front of the block has to be removed, that should hopefully increase the likelihood that there will be codes thrown. I'm optimistic that my SES will be back after that surgery...

Projectz28 01-30-2006, 04:54 PM I might even have to join ya for that surgery party...
Better yet, Ron how about you just buy my car and I go get a real race car;)

Jeff H 01-30-2006, 08:01 PM Ooohhh, ooohhh, ooohhh, can I watch? I'm still recovering from doing my longtube headers(did I tell you guys the story about the Astro Van transmission in my car?) and I ran into a few snags. I'm pretty sore still, but I think I can lift a beer to celebrate every bolt that gets taken off!:D
Oh, and Ron, I just changed out my O2 sensors so I could bring over the old ones if you're still looking to turn that SES light back on!
kazman 01-30-2006, 08:19 PM Oh, and Ron, I just changed out my O2 sensors so I could bring over the old ones if you're still looking to turn that SES light back on!
Hey, I have a pair of burned o2 sensor wire harnesses to go with them.
97TransAm 01-31-2006, 11:14 AM Bahahahahaha.... roflmao... I should know better than read these posts at work. If we had post this in the "LT1" tech area, injuneer Fred and Shoebox would be freakin'. Bahahahaha.
Bri... I think it's funnier when someone asks me what Mods have I done and I can reply "96 red camaro Z mod with a 97 Trans Am interior, exterior, blacken and cleaned...."
Jeff... the old O2 sensor would be great. I'll just sand the ends so that they are nice and sparkly...
Jim... no problem. I have duct tape and speaker wire.
Projectz28 01-31-2006, 06:15 PM Yeah thats pretty funny... but I have a true gem for your SES. I just pulled the O2's from my headers and they are both fouled from running leaded fuel thru the car. What can I say, I was at the track and almost out of fuel and still going rounds... had to do it. I got O2 sensor faults all over the ecm, lol!
