OK analysts, I have a question. What is the cheapest possible way to get a super stipped Camaro? It could be designed so that aftermarket things can be integrated, if the buyer wanted.
How cheap for a Camaro with
a base v8
no airbags, but with seat harness.
no A/C
No radio, but have the hole covered with plastic (maybe stamped to say "Camaro") so that an aftermarket radio could be installed if that was choosed.
No glove box
No floor mats
Cheap carpet (or no carpet, and just spray the floor with truck bed linner :p)
no butt warmers
no fancy gauges
no cruise control
one speed windshield wipers
no engine dress kit
leaving the car at primer black.
Yossarian14 01-22-2006, 07:23 PM You do realize that all this stuff is not even going to affect the weight of the car by much, you could loose all of that from not eating fast food and taking a pre-race dump. If your talking about price because you want it as cheap as possible thats a little different. I dont think anyone could guess how much is would cost GM to create stripped down models like this because the cost of making a series out of the ordinary would make the difference in price minimal. Anyone know what the agreement between car companies and racing teams are? Do they supply them with already stripped versions of the car or that completely up to the team.

Alot of the car's computer system is in the stereo nowadays, so you can't do without it (if you instal an aftermarket radio, you still need to keep the original wired to the car and stored someplace in the car).
No glove box:
Does nothing to save cost or weight. Besides, instrament panels are done as a whole unit by outside OEM companies now.
No floor mats:
At a MFG cost of probally $3 and a weight of about 2 pounds, isn't worth it.

I don't see the need for these either, but it seems people who actually buy new cars today tend to load them up. Plus, from what I hear, people tend to get addicted to them in the northeast once they have a vehicle with them.

low cost low weight item (works via vehicle's engine electronics today).

I wouldn't even go for that one, besides, I think 2 speed wipers are required..

Not sure it's part of the program, but nonetheless, probally costs the MFG less than a buck, and weighs less than a good picture frame.

Means there would have to be a special section of assembly line to remove the cars midway through the paint shop. More troublesome (and likely added cost) than to simply send the car through normally.
I have been a fan of basic sports cars without the frills, though I know that 99% of those who buy new sporty cars like to load it up with everything they can afford. However, I have to admit it's been a learning experience going from my fully loaded '97 Z28 to the relatively basic B4C, and there isn't even that much difference.

I removed my A/C (I now race my former daily driver) two years ago. I took out the condenser, accumulator, compressor, and all lines. In other words, everything but the in dash evaporator.
Total weight loss = 27 lbs.
No floor mats:
At a MFG cost of probally $3 and a weight of about 2 pounds, isn't worth it. Believe it or not, the total weight for a complete set is actually much closer to 20 lbs. Remember that race thing? ;)

I had a link to a list of weights of vehicle systems which I seem to have lost. It pegged a car's AC at 150 pounds, though I don't know what it included or didn't include. I'm a little pressed for time tonight, but I see if I can find it again. :)

yea....but....The minimum wage now, corrected, isn't as high as it was in 1969. No one wants to spend 28k for a base v8, then rip out 5 grand in stuff you dont need. I'm now 95% sure I won't be able to afford the Camaro v8 when it comes out. And a v6 is out of the question. I'm thinking about getting back into mountain biking. That would give me some reason to buy a cheap used subaru.

Not sure what you're getting at, but the V8 car, new, I don't think will be targeted at guys making minimum wage. As to your second sentence, I believe the number of folks that would want a car that you describe at the top, considering the cost of engineering around all of the deleted items, would not be cost effective.
