Chevy would be wise...

to make the Z28 the top performing Camaro, and the SS a mid level.

It would make sense from a marketing standpoint, since currently the SS is the top model on every other model that they offer. And since the previous SS was the top model.

I think Dodge should make the new Challenger SRT8 the mid level performer, and then just a regular Hemi Challenger as the top model. It would make sense since all other SRT models are top performers in each model.

Also, BMW's new M5 should be the mid level performer for the 5 series, and then have a top dog be like a 540i. That would be sweet. And it would make sense.

I was thinking that Mercedes would be smart to start making their AMG series cars the mid level entries, like a SL65 as a base model, and then a SL500 as the top dog.

All of these scenarios would make sense, and would absolutely not confuse the customer.

The SS badge has never really been on cars that were performers - only luxury cruisers with decent performance. Hell look at the '70 LS6 SS 454 Chevelle - that thing didn't run. I'd much rather have a '70 Malibu - now those kicked ass. Plus they are worth a lot more money.

Yes sir - the SS has never been king. It's never really been a mark of performance, more of a cheap base model option in most cars throughout Chevy's history.

Mark my words - the new Camaro SS will be the base V6 option, and the Z28 will be top dog with a supercharged LS7 putting down 600 rwhp.

Just my .02

GM should also get rid of the Z06 and start calling it the Corvette SS,

I'm so confused...what does Z06 mean....shouldn’t it be an SS too?

I mean the top Malibu is an SS....

Yes that would make sense since the Corvette's top model has always been SS. Just like the Camaros of the past. ;)

Except between 1973 and 1995 when the SS wasn’t produced and you could only get a Z28 as the top model....

But why count those years....we all know the last few years of the 4th gen are the only thing that matters.

Plus, the Z28 had such great companionship all those years. My personal favorite was the Z34 Lumina! that was a rocking ride:D

PS-At least for my part this is all in jest, I simply love aggravating the Z28 Nazi's. As long as the top dog Camaro is one bad mo-fo, I will own one, no matter what designation it wears ...............

Yep, and the Z/28 sure kept Trans Am racing right up there at the top. In fact I can't wait to be able to flip flop between Nascar and Trans Am next season

Hey if Chev has the Z28 as the top model, I guess I'll be buying a Z28. If it's an SS, I'll be buying the SS. When it all boils down, I really don't care just as long as they make the damn thing! :D

Yeah I agree, good thing these days the only other Z car is the fastest best handling car to ever be built by GM........it does however sit on the show room floor next to SS Cobalt’s and Malibu’s though....hmmmmm those don’t dilute any name at all….

If you really wanna go there, no Z28 was ever a V6. There were V6 SS Impala's and Nova's in the begining LOL. How about 4 door Chevelle SS's? What about todays FWD V6 SS's? Are all those 8MPG 14sec 396 SS Camaros (not the L78, which was rare) still impressive today? ;) I'll tell you what is though, a 302 with more HP that uses the last 3/4's of the tach up and was the best handling/braking musclecar of it's time. (much like IROC-Z's, ironically they did real nice in the later Players Challenge series too) Also, those LS6 cars only got low 13's. :)

Yep, and the Z/28 sure kept Trans Am racing right up there at the top.

IIRC, the Z28 still has the best record for wins in a season in Trans Am, and there was also a pretty known Z28 that did some good stuff in drag racing too. ;)

Those Impy's go pretty good (low low 14s). If they could just switch it to RWD it would be perfect.

The one SS I don't care too much for though is the Malibu wagon one. That's pretty ridiculous.

I vote for a turbo ecotec hybrid in the SS Camaro, and I vote they use the Z28 option on the top of the line HHR performance model. They should also have a V6 with a 150 shot of nawz as the top performing model, with a single exhaust outlet coming out of the left rear.

01-17-2006, 11:16 PM
It's obvious that I'm Ok with either as my username plainly states. lol

Very good and bad points on the topic from both sides.

I grew up in the era where it all started. Back then, we would get excited when the new model year would arrive. We couldn't wait to see the cosmetic changes & powertrains the new model year would bring. Now they all basically look the same from year to year. For example, other than wheels, park a '98 Camaro beside an '02 and tell me which is which.

My sister dated her future husband who had a '63 Impala SS 327-300 hp and traded it in on a brand new '65 SS-396 Impala 4-speed red on red. It was the first 4-speed I'd ever ridden in. Then, my other friends had the Impalas with the 283 & powerglide. As a pre-teen, I was embarassed and wondered why Chev even bothered.

As far as the Z-28, I can only remember seeing one (1) '67. There were plenty '69 Z's running around and were admired by just about everybody. They were considered a hi-revving, noisey lifter, crazy handling & mysterious car. If you caught one out on the road, you had better hope the road was straight, otherwise you'd get your feelings hurt. 290 hp...yeah right. lol

The L-79's & L-78's were quicker...depending on driver. I saw plenty L-78 Novas and Chevelles but don't remember seeing them in Camaros. You could buy a stripper L-78 Nova SS for $2,800.

As far as the LS6 Chevelles running low 13's? It really depended on driver too. I saw a new one run 15's at a dragstrip. Of course, he was smoking the F-70's halfway down the track. Put F-70x14 bias-ply tires on the LS1 Camaros and see what kind of times they'd run. Remember, the LS6 Chevelle had 500 lf-lb torque...not a good package for F70 tires.

I bought my SS just to have a more exclusive car...not to smirk at the Z-28 owners. I know where the car's origin comes from. Of course, I don't see SS owners taking the badges off and putting on Z-28 emblems, but I do see Z-28 guys try and turn their Z's into SS's. I consider my car a Z-28 with the SS option package. I mainly get criticized by the SS guys for doing so.
