How do you assign a value...offically ?

A guy I work with has about a 68 RS Camaro and is trying to get an offical value for it. I have pointed him to www.nada.com and he has looked at other web sources. He even tried some nation wide automotive appraisal service, but the "local" guy is in San Francisco and only comes down here every 10 months or so. It's a straight car. Basically a restorable but a little rough daily driver. Yes, the motor and body serial numbers match, but it would need lots of work to be in show quality. Are there car show judges he could contact ? Auction houses that would give him an estimate, like they do on Antiques Roadshow ?

I'm not 100% on the year, but it's certainly not "cherry". But it is straight. Where can he get value that would hold up in court ? I'm not sure web site estimates will be admisable. It's a divorce thing. I think the NADA site listed it in the 9K-12K range. Of course, the other side of the isle is trying to say it's worth more than twice that. Lawyers.

As far as something that would hold up in court, the appraisal person is the best way to go. You'll have an estimate from an experienced person whom it is assumed keeps current on the market trends. He'll have seen the car in person and be able to give an honest value.
There is probably someone local that fits the bill, I assume you're somewhere in Souther Cailf. since you said the national "local guy" is in San Fran. if that's the case he might try these guys:

If that doesn't work try tryping Classic Car appraisals, California into google there's plenty of appraisers around.
Good Luck!

Go to google, type in "collector car appraisals, southern california'
There are tons.
Here's a list of some:
