Chasing a rattle / clunk. Should coil sping coils ever touch? There is a spot in my springs where it is obvious that they touch. Worn a bit, and shiny....

Car seems to sit fairly level and normal, and rides fine, though with new shocks....

No. Springs should not touch. Coil overs maybe be different, but I am pretty sure they aren't.

I didn't think so......

Um, as far as coils touching and if they should or not.....

Seems by your sig you have SLP springs, is that correct? If so, touching coils is completely normal at the soft end (the end where the coils are closest). That's what progressive springs do, and it's not your noise.

Wrong car. This is the GTA. Stock 135k mile springs. They are progressive though I think (there is not equal spacing the length of the coil), but they are supposed to touch where they are closer?

They have too, that's what makes takes them out of the equation, and the softer coils have to compress completely for the stiffer coils to come into play. However, I've never seen a 3rd gen with progressive rate springs to begin with.

They look like these, I believe. Was late last night, but still....

Anyone else? Should the coils ever touch on stock 3rd gen springs?

If those are the springs you have in the car then yes. You will always see a portion of the coils touch on a progressive spring like the ones in the picture.
