ECM Code 36

Code 36 = MAF burn-off circuit

Probable cause:

Code 36 can be set due to high resistance in the burn-off relay contacts or connections, the failure of the ECM to properly ground the circuit, or a poor connection at any of the relays, MAF sensor, and ECM.

Questions:

OK, where is the burn-off relay and what should the resistance be?

Why would the ECM fail to properly ground the circuit?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to get this thing smoged soon, to complete the transfer of ownership.

Thanks in advance

This has been covered many times (you should do a search),but here goes. First 9 out of 10 times it is either a loose(poor connection or a faulty relay. Do a wiggle test at all connections especially the main box at the firewall then clear the codes and see if that helps(usually does for a while). Pull and clean any and all connections(yes even the wheather packs)and use some Electrical Anti Corrosion Paste. The relay is usually one of the relays on the firewall by the mastercylinder. I would post a pic,but don't have a link. Pm me you e-mail and I can send you a pic.

Don't bother testing the relay. Just replace it. And check all the connections. Should fix it.

Kwiksilver do you know where this burn-off relay is located on an 89 IROC.
Thanks

Did you get the photo? That shows the relay. Relays are cheap about $15 and are interghangeable with the others. So you can swap them around and if you get a differant code that is the bad one, just change it out with a new one.

It hasn't arrived yet, 7:45 PM pacific.

Where can you get the relays.
Autozone said they didn't have it.

Sent the pic last night to the addy you gave me. Autozone should have the relays, but the dumba$$ probably doesn't know what he is looking for. Try CarQuest or NAPA,or even PEPboys,Kragens. The GM #is14089936,Car Quest # isRY-109,and Kragens#is Sorensen#MR-44.

I swaped the MAF burn-off relay with the MAF power relay,
cleared the computer, and the code changed to 34.
So I soon as Christmas is over I will get a new relay.

Thanks for the help.

Buy a couple and keep one as a spare. You never know when you'll need one. I always buy two at a time it's just kind of handy. :)

I found an auto shop that carries them $9.00 each.
I took your advice and got two.

Thanks again.
