quick repair of cat flanges

My dad's 1993 geo prism is on its way out. Its got 195k miles and basically the common japanese-like car syndrome is occuring: everything is falling apart but the engine! Anyways, he just got a new pipe put in from the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter due to a rust creating a hole. The mechanic said his flanges on the cat are about to break loose. He loves his car and wants to see it to or over 200k but repairs are getting pricey since the car isn't worth jack on bluebook. Are there any suggestions to get a quick cheap fix for holding the cat on to the body that will last for a few more thousand miles. We don't have welding equipment at home, but could get it done at a shop if it was cheap enough.
Thanks!-Adam

Make up a bracket from a flat piece of bar stock and hold it into the cat with a hoseclamp
