The Big Show 12-17-2005, 12:58 PM I ran into some issues with the stock LT1 headgaskets so I had to have a custom set made. They ended up turning out pretty damn nice and showed up at the shop yesterday so we put the heads on last night. I figured you guys would like to see some teaser pics. Wow...talk about a long time coming....

I'm still waiting on my set of Morel lifters and then we'll order pushrods and seal the deal on this project. Stay tuned...

32 valve heads, this ain't photoshoped is it.
Tell us more about this motor, what intake is that BTW.

LOL...no, no photochopin' necessary. It's been a project I have been messing with for like 3 years and I'm finally just finishing it.
Motor is a 385 (.040 over) ci LT1. Heads are the Dominion 32 valve (now called Arao) that have been extensively worked over. Bottom end is stuffed with Nascar style Carrillo rods and I forget the manf of the crank since it's been so long. Cam is a relatively small hydraulic roller and the intake is a dart wilson that has been welded, ported, and converted to EFI.
Things you might notice (or not have noticed) is that the opti has taken a hike. I'm going to run a stand alone ignition setup so people's jaw can hit the floor when they see plug wires coming out of valve covers heading back to a pro-billet distributor on an LT1
Other than that, it's allllllllllllll LT1.
'93 formy ... 12-17-2005, 02:18 PM Very impressive. Just wondering what kind of number's you hope to put out with this thing?
Way to represent the LT1 crowd:thumb: (even though it's not REALLY an LT1  _

Hey, those heads are still getting cooled first so it's still wearing the LT1 badge proudly ;)
If this thing will stay together, I'm expecting 700+ naturally aspirated.

Again, very impressive. I thought my goal of 600+ N/A was alot but 700+ You're in an entire different league.
I have just one more question. Do those 32V heads flow that much more than the typical aftermarket head. The reason I ask is because I plan on going with AFR 215 "raised runner" LT4 heads on my 396 build up. As far as I know, they're the best flowing head available for the LT1.
How would the 215's fair against those 32V heads of yours?
I wish I had that kind of money, and knowledge to be able to buy those heads and modify them to work with the LT1 but I don't. :(
Maybe one day....
For now though, I'm still saving up for those 215's :)

The place where these heads shine is in the low lift range. Peak numbers are for bragging rights but when you can tell someone your heads flor over 300 cfm at .400 lift than you've got yourself something that stands out. The manf. supposedly made/makes a raised runner version of these heads that flows 400+ cfm but I'm just going off what the website says. The raised runner AFR head is a solid head and you can't go wrong. Plus you can easily get the parts you need which hasn't been the case with these heads
Despite what ya think, I have been fortunate during this build as far as cost. I have alot of high end parts in this motor that I managed to get deals on. I am good friends with my engine builder and he has built every motor I have ever put in my camaro's so the trust is there as well as the fact that his engine building is bar none. I have built the entire car in my garage so labor has just been me and friend's which is always a huge savings. The knowledge has come from blowing up LT1's for the last 5 years :p
joeSS97 12-17-2005, 03:34 PM Very cool! To say the least. Keep us posted on the results please.

billyburnout 12-17-2005, 06:37 PM Where did you find those haeds and what do they go for? What kind of cam and rockers do you use?
jerminator96 12-17-2005, 07:43 PM http://www.araoengineering.com/
As for price, you probably dont want to know. (Not to mention installation issues)
AdioSS 12-17-2005, 08:58 PM hmm, at what point would you have problems with the valves hitting each other? The intakes and exhaust are obviously on different angles by looking at the pictures. Your cam has got to be "small" because otherwise the valves would kill each other during overlap.
What size valves are they? Any idea on port volumes? Do you have any pictures of the intake ports?
You know that when you are done people are going to be asking if it's a Hemi :)
The Big Show 12-17-2005, 09:01 PM (Not to mention installation issues)
Actually installation was a snap.

I had some pics of the intake ports way back when but I dunno where those pics are now. They measure 2.5" tall and an 1.5" wide and no, I'm not kidding. I also use to have all the specs on port volume and what not but I just don't remember where that stuff is. This project has seemingly been something I've been working on here and there because I've had some set backs waiting on parts so alot of stuff is at the shop underneath stuff. Evacuating for Katrina didn't help either....
I think the valve sizes are on Arao's website.
Do a search on the thread on head flow and you'll see why I didn't use a big cam :D
LOL@hemi...yeah I know but thats all the better when I let'em know it's what the general "should" have built LT1 style...
taner 12-18-2005, 12:41 AM nice to see it coming together bobby! look forward to hearing about the results! i just yanked my motor, after 2 years of abuse i want to tear it down and replace bearings and upgrade the pins.
jerminator96 12-18-2005, 12:53 AM Actually installation was a snap.
Sorry, i was refering to various parts that have to be fabricated, i was always under the impression that putting a 32valve top end together wasnt a weekend job. I'm sure you know that as well as anybody.:)
ZBLKHELLRZR 12-18-2005, 01:45 AM Man those are killer. Can't wait to see that thing runnin. You got something I want though. You got a part # for the Stef pan? I need a new pan w/ the rebuild and I only want a Stef pan. Thanks. Again that's a sweet setup.
thesoundandthefury 12-18-2005, 03:39 AM I bet the exhaust note this thing's gonna put out will sound better than Angelina Jolie having an orgasm in the middle of Beethoven's 5th.
Think there's any possibility of getting some sound clips up once it's running?
flatlander757 12-18-2005, 10:03 AM How much did that cost? I can't find prices on their website?
Those heads are amazing!
rskrause 12-18-2005, 10:57 AM Guys, where have you been? TBS and UB are (in)famous in the LT1 on-line community for trying to make these heads work. They have been in never-never land 1/2 way between reality and vaporware for years. If you do a search, you can follow the epic saga as it happened. This has been a long time coming, and if it works as hoped I bet TBS' motor won't be the last LT1 to be running these heads. I gave the whole matter some thought myself, but I lacked the pioneering spirit, time, and the $$$ that these guys have committed. So, I am more than a little curious and am rooting for good numbers from the combo.
Good luck, and thanks for the update.

Thanks Taner, your motor has been good to you for sure. I hope this one stays together as long as yours so I can continue on with phase II
Sorry, i was refering to various parts that have to be fabricated, i was always under the impression that putting a 32valve top end together wasnt a weekend job. I'm sure you know that as well as anybody.
Although it doesn't seem that way, but alot of the parts used aren't anything elaborate or special except for the headgaskets. Fortunately a quick google search landed me a place in Texas that has been around for over 20 years doing just that so now I know where to go for the next set if/when necessary and it only took a few days. The intake is an off the shelf piece that needed some tender loving care and the headers were custom made using the chevy Stahl pattern like any head that needs alot of exhaust and UB helped me out there  Other than that nothing else is used. I chose to do some different things on the motor so thats why it looks the way it does cause originally an LT1 intake with a monoblade was going to be sitting on the motor.
Man those are killer. Can't wait to see that thing runnin. You got something I want though. You got a part # for the Stef pan? I need a new pan w/ the rebuild and I only want a Stef pan. Thanks. Again that's a sweet setup.
Thanks for the kind words! I don't have a part number on that pan. That pan has been on a couple different motors and it's been damn good to me, thats for sure. Easiest thing to do would be to call up Stef's and just tell them what you want. Everything is custom fabricated anyway so you'll get exactly what you want and how you want it when you order. I spent over an hour on the phone with them (just bs'ing) a couple weeks ago cause I lost the pan bolts and I respect Stef's more now than ever. Very cool guys and a solid operation with well built materials coming out of there (I've actually jacked my motor up using the pan).
I bet the exhaust note this thing's gonna put out will sound better than Angelina Jolie having an orgasm in the middle of Beethoven's 5th.
Think there's any possibility of getting some sound clips up once it's running?
It's kind of interesting you bring that up. The manf. of the heads as well as the previous owner of UB's heads said the exhaust note that comes out of these heads is nothing they have ever heard before and it was pure ecstasy. What's funny is they both said that numerous times during the conversations I've had with them so I'm anxious to hear myself. Don't worry about sound clips, there will be videos as well :D
How much did that cost? I can't find prices on their website?

If you go to the website the head prices are right there on the left hand side menu.

Thanks Rich, all I hope is that it stays together. I'll continue the updates from this point (finally have a reason to be excited) and I'll have more pics once the lifters are in.
VIPRETR 12-18-2005, 03:34 PM Simply awesome. I can hardly wait to see/hear this machine run. Great work Bobby.
flatlander757 12-18-2005, 08:05 PM Oh lol I am blind:D
Wow they're expensive, but not as much as I thought they would be, I'd say $10k is reasonable for something like that.
It would be pretty crazy to whoop ass on 03/04 Cobras with a NATURALLY ASPIRATED F body;)
I know you said they used to have LT1 heads like this, I'm guessing that's a special order item and you'd have to call/email to get info on them?
What did the custom headers run you?

From what I can tell all the heads are a special order from what people have told me when they called. But yeah, you will definitely have to call.
I got the headers used but you can normally figure on around at least 1500 for a GOOD set of custom headers (tig welded).
Loadre 12-18-2005, 09:02 PM I expect for hell to freeze over the second your motor fires up.

Do you know what kind of compression you're running?
Critter 12-19-2005, 12:29 PM *mouth wide open with dumbfounded look
The Big Show 12-19-2005, 12:32 PM Do you know what kind of compression you're running?
Right around 11.1 to 1. Originally I had these pistons custom made with domes and got around 13.5 to 1 out of the cc but I sat around too long with too much time to think and decided I wanted something that could run on pump gas so I fly cut the pistons. What a mistake...
SStrokerAce 12-19-2005, 03:28 PM Bobby, I wanted to ask you who did those pistons for ya..
I still have Bobs set here and the old man is still designing the rocker setup.
Sorry I never got back to you, but give me a call anytime.
Fellas the key to these heads is the valve curtain area, A 396 LT1 will not run out of air with these things until some serious RPM.

I sent one of my heads to JE and had them make me a custom set. At the time I was building a race only motor so I told them to give me as much compression as I could get so they put a nice dome on each of the poppers for me with 4 valve reliefs. Was definitely something different...
I wondered what happened to ya on the call back. All good. You are dead nutz on with the curtain area.
N20Dave 12-19-2005, 10:21 PM Bobby, our flow numbers and combination is very similar and judging by that you should be at 700 na flywheel. By the way man...
:thumb: They look seriously tommy tough nutz.
I can't wait to hear it run.

That was pretty funny. I told N20 Dave we'll definitely have to square them off and have a go at it. His car is really nice with the wicked power to back it up. I am not gonna mess with any paint or corresponding look good stuff until I know the motor is good to go.
N20Dave 12-20-2005, 06:17 PM That is funny.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I've had no luck with hoods. Every single one that I have ever owned has come to me broken so I just decided to fix and keep this one instead of sending it back. Plus I got it really cheap on a group purchase ;)
I'll definitley trade keys for a pass! My engine builder built an SB2.2 for a buddy of mine and dropped it in a Chevy LUV truck. With just a 300 hit of the sauce none of the big block guys believed they were getting beat up on by a small block, even to this day.
OneFlyn95z28 12-21-2005, 10:25 PM About damn time!
New house ,wife and Business made me make the choice to can the 18* thing on mine. I just fired the thing yesterday. No where near as nice as yours is going to be ;)
I AM trading my 18* stuff for some 220s and a t76 ;) Maybe that will help me catch up!
Way to go man! UB get yours waming up too!
mongse_1 02-27-2006, 09:19 PM Damn Bobby, I remember when you started on that project. I remember talking about it w/ you @ Thunder Shootout and the little incident w/ the stock manifold walking off at the machine shop. I bet whoever tried to bolt that to their ported and polished LT1 heads were in for a surprise. :D
