First I want to say WOW. I stop reading the 5th gen forum for a week to take care of my finals and all hell breaks loose. Still haven't seen the car, but I'd rather not until pics of it at NAIAS come out.

Which brings me to the topic (I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere btw, so I appologize if I missed it). Is there any chance the car will be coming to LA? I'd wet my pants if I could see it in person. Really.

From everything I have heard it will not be in LA. Something about it not being able to be in 2 places at once... Technicalities....

I doubt it will be here either, I'd love to see it but NAIAS is the main American show!

If it were in LA, I'd have no reason to go to Detroit!

No, it's a Detroit only gig. I tried to make the case. An e-mail I sent making the case for an LA unveiling made the rounds with a few of the big guns there after I asked the fellow running the shows.

A big gun thanked me and cc'd it to others, I guess to think about. Meanwhile, the guy running the show explained very clearly why it wasn't likely to happen.

Seems the place where Camaro would likely sell the most, and the state where all new car trends start is still sidlined as a place to show new Hybrids and Eco-friendly stuff.

Guys, it's because the concept is being stored in my garage, and they don't want me to have to drive it too far to get to the show:rolleyes:. Not that I wouldn't mind driving the concept all the way to LA, but they said Detroit would be far enough for its maiden voyage:shrug:. Hey, don't argue, just accept it;).

Good question! :thumb:

Does anybody "in the know" know whether we should expect to see the Camaro concept at the Toronto show in February? (17th - 26th)

... that would kick a$$

Well, the Z06 made it to last year's Toronto show:think: ... I don't know if that means there was no conflict last year, and hopefully there won't be any reason for the Camaro not to be at this year's show either??

exactly. GM seems resigned to completely give up the west coast market to foreign makes. they should be doing completely the opposite instead. the LA show may not have as much prestige, but it sure has a lot of people driving civics, accords, camrys and whatnot come to check out what's new and cool. for them, everything GM brings out is a year behind. a lot of stuff GM has no display would be seen on the street for 6 months. of course GM won't draw a crowd with something that old.

the LA crowd is the crowd GM needs to wow. and I mean, NOW not tomorrow. there may not be a tomorrow for GM in california. just go drive around ANY college campus parking lot. it's all toyotas, hondas, occasional mazda/nissan/ford/hyundai. when these kids graduate and start making money they won't be buying from GM.

Don't think for a minute that we don't know the importance of the West Coast market.

The problem is that LA schedules the show on top of NAIAS. NAIAS gets thousands of press peeps........thousands...whereas LA gets less than 100.

Now........LA organizers realize that and LA gets moved in November in 2006....(two shows....January.....then in November...then they stay in November from here on out)

I will post a schedule for the concept after January 9.

RED I think moving the LA Show to Nov is a great idea. People here notice that Toyota, Honda and Nissan (locals) bring big things to this show and GM, Ford and DCX don't. I'm not saying that its why people here but imports more but every little point idea helps if the domestic brands want to curb the import tide in CA.

So LA still won't get any of the hot new cars first...? Wont they still be shown in Detriot first and then 10 months later be in LA? Or is LA going to start getting some of the "cool" new cars first? I just dont see the best cars being released 2 months before NAIAS... I can see LA still getting the shaft this way. But maybe not.

Do you know roughly if it's the beginning, middle or end of November for the LA auto show? It would be nice if it was the beginning, that way it can be transported up to SF's Moscone Auto show, which usually is around Thanksgiving week.

When the LA show moves to November, it will be in the middle to end of the month. Giving lead time to Detroit. In my opinion, given the size of Cobo Hall, Chicago is going to be the premier debut event in February come next years shows.

Well, I know that the city of Chicago would love that...and the state of Illinois, but I don't see that happening any time in the immediate future. There is a decided difference between the press attendance in Chicago versus Detroit. True, Cobo Hall is way too small. McCormick Place, on the other hand is so big that they can't fill it!

Yeah, lets work on showing Chicago some more love!!! Lol, I know its nowhere near the same as detroit as far as press, but it is still a very large car market, and Chicago should get some good stuff also. Ive gone to the Chicago AutoShow every year since I was 10(which means ive only gone 11 years, lol, but hey, thats half my life!) and its always a great time, but GM just never seems to have the right feel to it, I can never put my finger on it, but it just never seems to work.

well.....it may interest you to know that the largest show GM does in terms of square feet is Chicago....by far. The average Chevy Exhibit in many shows is somewhere from 18,000 to 24,000 square feet. (smallest is just over 6,000 square feet in Davenport, IA show followed by Hartford at about 7,000 square feet)
In Chicago, it's over 54,000 square feet. I put more properties in Chicago than any other show...but when you drop them into 54,000 square feet, they appear to shrink.

Now...interestingly, we were given the mandate by GM senior management to bring the height of our displays down...very much like is done in Europe....up until this year, the max. height was 12 feet. (I got away with 14 foot high corner IDs.) GM was lauded by the Chicago press for making this decision. They talked about the fact that some manufacturers were literally causing 'valleys' and 'mountains' with huge architecture....very hard to maneuver while GM tends to make the cars the stars.

Is it the right thing to do? Well.....here's a fact that I'm most proud of: There are 65 major shows in the U.S. 23 of them have a 'best of show' or 'people's choice' award. Chevy won 13 of the 23 last year.

All that said. we're starting to 'grow' somewhat. For instance, at NAIAS and Chicago (and probably Atlanta) I will have a video screen that's 18 feet high and 28 feet across. (one heckofa TV!!)

12-17-2005, 01:20 AM
oh...and for what it's worth.......everything shown at NAIAS by GM is always sent to Chicago. So we're showing all kinds of love!! Chevy has about 22,000 square feet in NAIAS....and as I said above, over 54,000 in Chicago.

Dont get me wrong, I didnt say that there wasnt enough at Chicago, cuz even though ive never been to another cities auto show, im sure they arent usally as big as Chicago, cuz like you said, McCormick Place is HUGE! But I think part of the problem has to do with the size, because GM in general is too spread out sometimes...

Another thing that PERSONALLY I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see more of is engine displays, cutaways and the such. I love just walking up to an engine and being able to see it out of the car, for some reason that just seems cool to me. It also helps to see how some engines work, like the VW engines, like the W engines, it was cool to just see the insides and ACTUALLY see how it works.

Oh and a personal request, PLEASE have posters available!!! It makes my night when I can get a free car poster at the auto show! I distinctly remember some awesome Porcsche posters from a few years ago. Do this with like the Z06, CTS-V, STS-V, and any other cool looking cars...heck even the Camaro Concept:bow:

Actually, I like the engine cutaway idea too (not saying I haven't seen them ... I remember GM had 1 or 2 on display at the Toronto show a couple years back ... not sure if they did last year? ).

we did a Camaro poster every year from 1997 thru 2002......and put 'em out at most autoshows. The problem with "poster" and "autoshow" is that they're usually 'scrap' by the time you've gotten thru the show and back home......so we do 'hero' cards now.......usually 8 1/2 by 11 ...in hard stock so they'll survive the trek thru autoshows.

As to 'spreading' out in Chicago.......I know what you mean. But believe it or not, we've actually used time-lapse cameras to look at the chicago floor space....(no, we're not playing big brother.....) During peak times, you literally cannot see the carpet within Chevy from ceiling mounted cameras.......there's that many people wandering around -- so space is so very important!
