So my question is do they women like this or the new retro mustang better?
Would you buy a retro mustang or this retro camaro, or do you hate both?
Darth Xed 12-08-2005, 11:51 AM An interesting point.
And, at least from this perspective, I think the Mustang will win.
It has somewhat of a "cute" factor too it... the Camaro looks "meaner" and I wonder how that'll translate as far as female ownership.
Capn Pete 12-08-2005, 01:21 PM "If" there were to be a second car show up at NAIAS like there is rumoured to be, and "if" GM would be so gracious as to call it Firebird, and "if" they'd style it like Firebirds of the past were (a little less "business" than the Camaros always were) then I can see that appealing to women as Firebirds always seemed to .
SMUJeremy 12-08-2005, 01:38 PM My gf hates it, but then again she is a huge 4th gen LT1 fan because of it's sleak low slung body.

BUT, I assured her that it should look better in person at NAIAS, and she wanted to go anyway, so we'll just wait and see.

Camaro/Firebird never really was a chick car, anyway. Way more women driving Mustangs than F-bodies.
Yeah, there are exceptions, of course, but I think we've even seen the numbers thrown around here before.
Hopefully the new one will turn things around. Mustang does have quite an advantage, though... :(

RoMaD 12-08-2005, 01:49 PM The wife likes it. She's not too thrilled with the front end, but loves the rear because "it looks mean". Personally, I like the rear too, but would like to see it done with oval or rounded taillights. The front could be made meaner by giving it the "squint" like the TrailBlazer, Colorado and other GM cars/trucks have.
I have to say, with only minor refinements, I'll take the leaked one just the way it is, color and all. I wouldn't even think twice. The only thing I'm wondering is possibly how much better the one at NAIAS will look.
turbo96z28 12-08-2005, 01:52 PM one of my male Ford friends saw it last night and he liked it. my gf hasn't seen it yet, and doesn't really care to much right now (she's starting a new job on the 19th and has more important things to worry about), but i'm gonna show her mom and dad tonight, both of which are diehard Mustang people. i can't wait to see their reactions.
HAZ-Matt 12-08-2005, 01:54 PM Interesting point about cuteness. Do women with SUVs like the intimidation factor to come from the mass and not the styling?

Back in the late 70s/early 80s GM realized that 30-40% of Camaro buyers were female, resulting in the Berlinetta Camaros that were meant to be more female oriented. I don't know why they eventually quit catering to the female segment but maybe if they tried it again with a base Camaro, a Camaro LT, and a Z/28 it would be successful. The Camaro LT would be the more luxurious touring car with a V8 option, like the LT and Berlinetta Camaros of yore. It could have some sort of appearance package as well, some trim striping and rallye wheels or something. That should also be the platform that the convertible makes its first appearance on.

Jason E 12-08-2005, 05:39 PM Well, all passenger seat discussions aside for the moment, mine claims she likes it a lot...and said the wheels were "friggen huge." I have permission to buy one...as if I needed it, anyway ;)
SummerFall 12-08-2005, 05:51 PM What do the women think? This one really likes it. I can’t wait to see it when the auto show comes to NYC. :D Make me one in Vortec Red!
I guess the majority of women do buy cars according to looks. (I do, I just buy cool cars!) Based on my (often frustrating) conversations with other females, comfort and money are the other big factors. But apparently color is another seller. I have a dear friend (who drives a Miata) that has said to me on more than one occasion that she likes cars in “pretty colors." Clearly there is a correlation between repeated hair dyeing and intelligence seepage.
2K1SunsetSS 12-08-2005, 05:55 PM gf - doesn't like it, hates retro. She hates the new mustang also. She loves the 99-04 mustang and also likes my SS.(just to give you an idea of what she likes and dislikes)
mom- loves it but thought the front was to mustang-ish
random lady here at work in her 40s - thought it was ok, looked to much like a mustang.
There a lot of people out there that think for this car to be a success it needs 8billion HP. Not true, the base model v6 needs to sell. End of story.

Don't get pissed if the Camaro @ NAIAS has become a little more "CUTE".
I would be more then happy if the V6 Camaro had a happy face to sell the masses and they kept the pissed-off face for those power-hungry, V8-lusting, HP-minded Camaro Z28/SS Fanatics:D
MC'SZ28 12-09-2005, 03:07 AM Correct me if I am wrong, but females didn't care for the 4th gen because they coudn't see the front end while driving it. Looks like this won't be the case this generation

So its been a day since I showed her the concept photo. Out of the blue, while watching television, she tells me, "Honey, I want you to buy me the new Camaro...the one you showed me yesterday. I've been thinking about it".
Wow...I showed her the pic once, and now she's already thinking about it. I tried telling her that I could trade my car in for the new one, but she reminded me that she wanted it for herself - not me.
GM oughta read this one ;)

Chris 96 WS6 12-09-2005, 08:42 AM I'd like to note that my wife, who is not an enthusiast but has a love for Corvettes and all things F-body just from being around me for the last 10 years, took one look at the concept pic, paused and then said:
"It looks like a Mustang"
So there you have it. Seems to be a common response from the non-informed.
BigDarknFast 12-09-2005, 08:59 AM Correct me if I am wrong, but females didn't care for the 4th gen because they coudn't see the front end while driving it. Looks like this won't be the case this generation
Yep. My sister looked at Camaro verts in 2000, and ended up getting a 2000 Sebring vert instead. Her main complaint: "It feels to big, and I can't see out." I believe the new concept is a good remedy, as long as it has 'command seating'.
One other thing... I had predicted the macho looks of the 05 Mustang would turn off women buyers, a long time ago. Man was I wrong! I see women driving the 05 Stangs everywhere I go. That makes me cautiously optimistic about a new Camaro like the concept being liked by women.
SNEAKY NEIL 12-09-2005, 09:02 AM "It looks like a Mustang"

While uninformed, that may not be a good sign. I am not saying this is the case, but if the bulk of the general public feels that the car looks like a Mustang, then why would they be drawn to this Camaro when the Mustang does nothing for them? This perception won't gain sales from a larger audience that GM so badly wants, and maybe needs.
Obviously it is way to early to draw conclusions from this but who knows.
Chris 96 WS6 12-09-2005, 09:13 AM While uninformed, that may not be a good sign. I agree. The uninformed buy more of these cars than we do. Scott has said countless times that it must be recognizeable as a Camaro from a 1/4 mile away.
So, hopefully they've been tweaking this design to get more "Camaro out of it". I'm hoping that a color other than silver will reveal more Camaro in the overall shape too.
Its hard to go back to a shape that hasn't been a Camaro in 35 years and expect people to instantly recognize it. I think the rear end has a lot of the Dodge Challenger to it as well (although I actually always thought the Challenger and 'Cuda were F-body rip offs back in the day)
gmcvt 12-09-2005, 09:14 AM My wife loved it. Her response was " I want one".
SNEAKY NEIL 12-09-2005, 09:22 AM Scott has said countless times that it must be recognizeable as a Camaro from a 1/4 mile away.
The problem with that statement is: who is it supposed to be easily recognized by? We all would say that this is very recognizable as a Camaro because it looks just like a first gen, but do young people today even know what a 1st gen looks like? I told my g/f that it looks very similar to a "60's Camaro" and she had no idea what one looks like, she only knows 3rd and 4th gens because that is what she sees and what is around.
Chris 96 WS6 12-09-2005, 09:23 AM Good point Neil. At some point you have to cut the losses...if most of the enthusaists know what it is maybe that's enough.
I still remember being at the gas station in college when an old white haired lady asked if my '85 Camaro Sport Coupe was a Corvette.
This illustrates one of the risks of going retro.....you wipe out all continuity over time and the brand identification that went with it.
89_Irocz 12-09-2005, 09:32 AM My Girlfriend won't drive anything other than a Camaro. It does mather is its a 67 or the 09. Thats just how the girls are here in the Dirty South. She also told me that I have 3 years, start saving money now....lol
Random Precision 12-09-2005, 09:33 AM I think theres already enough distinction between the new camaro and mustang. My i showed my sister the pics and she said it looked awesome and that she'd "never seen a car like it". Meanwhile, her best friend drives a mustang. If it looks good, buyers will come, no matter what, enthusiasts or not.
bbqz28 12-09-2005, 09:47 AM My wife liked it a lot. She, like I, was surprised by how good even these "unfinished" pics looked. I've been telling her for years that when the new Camaro comes out that I'm getting one. I think after seeing these pics, she's looking forward to me having one too.
Jason E 12-09-2005, 01:00 PM "It looks like a Mustang"
So there you have it. Seems to be a common response from the non-informed.
And there you have it...this is the main reason why I did NOT want GM going retro with this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the masses, it DOES look like a Mustang. My fiance knows cars pretty well after hanging around me for the past 3 years. When she saw it last night, her first response was "that looks like a Charger." When she saw the Charger, her first response months back was "that looks like a Mustang."
That same blunt-nosed, slab-sided look is inherent in all 3 future pony cars when you include the Challenger. This sucks...period. I'm telling you...when the press has a field day because "Chevy copied Ford" (I mean, is this not as bad as the HHR vs. PT???), and buyers respond the same way, its gonna get ugly.
I like the concept, but I can see where the masses will think its a Mustang copy. In reality, is that all our car is???
SNEAKY NEIL 12-09-2005, 01:09 PM And since the current Mustang will have been out for almost 5 years by the time the Camaro comes out, the Mustang comparisons will be more harsh than ever. Talk about being late to the party! Now throw in the fact that the Challenger will come out first (most likely) and you have a very unoriginal idea that may get blasted by the public. The only way it won't is if the car is just CLEARLY better in just about every way, including looks.
If the car had a fresh design, all of the "copy-cat" and "being late to the party" BS would be a non-issue because the car would be unique and the car would be judged more freely on it's merits rather than judged as "oh yeah, Chevy has one of these too".
90rocz 12-09-2005, 01:29 PM I guess living with me, my wife is a little more informed, b/c she says she can't see a Mustang in it, except maybe for the "sorta hockey-stick" side treatment.
The windows are different, the fronts are different, the rear...I just don't see it. It looks a little too retro maybe, a little weird even, but Mustang-ish...?????
And like someone else said, the 1st gens are the most prised and command the most resale of practically any Camaro's. They're at every car show, swap meet, cruise in...etc. My kids even said it looks like an old Camaro only better.
lbrowne 12-09-2005, 02:37 PM My wife thought it looked great. Shes not an F-Bod entusiast but loves my 4th gen Trans Am. She also likes the new Challenger as well.
She has grown up around many muscle cars as her father is quite the gearhead. Her father loves mopar and fords, and she frequently drove one of his mach 3 stangs, and yes she loves mustangs.
She said it does not look like a mustang. Unless of course you want to compare that they BOTH have 4 tires...steering wheel...headlights too!!!
Chris 96 WS6 12-09-2005, 02:38 PM That same blunt-nosed, slab-sided look is inherent in all 3 future pony cars when you include the Challenger.
Yep. Let us hope they've put some more curves into the concept since the leak pics were taken. The car needs more "sex appeal" to differentiate it from the Mustang. Camaro's have pretty much always been more curvy than their Ford counterparts. It would be a way to stick some 4th gen heritage back into an otherwise blatantly retro design too.
NewbieWar 12-09-2005, 03:54 PM well i showed it to my ex gf... she originally said that hortons concept was too much like a mustang and she wouldnt buy it... she hates mustangs... wonder where she got that from :D ;)

Red89GTA 12-09-2005, 09:37 PM :) :D   and to whomever was asking about 10 smilies... i was just rejected for having 2 many smiles...
I mentioned 10 smilies in my post in the Poll thread :). BTW thank you to the kind soul who put my misery to rest.
I just showed these to my parents and they both like it. My mom said it looks really sharp and liked the roofline (looking at the pic from the back at the time) and said she liked the rear end and noted that they made it (the car as a whole) look like they originally did.
My dad said it looked cool and commented on how they were doing to the Camaro what Ford did to the Mustang (retro).
So that's 2 votes for cool and 2 comments on it being retro.

Just my input...since I'm a girl, I'm not really feeling the new Camaro, or the retro look either, to be honest. That's the trend now, but I'm not sure if it will still be when/if they release new Camaros. Personally, I think it might stick around, a lot of cars going into production are looking a lot like their concept designs. Also, I don't like the new Mustangs...I don't look for "cute" cars...to me, cute and car don't go together. That's one of the reasons I like my '99 Z28. It's classy looking, yet sporty and stands out in a good and unique way (Z28's/trans-am's are pretty rare around here, though). Don't get me wrong, I don't hate on Mustangs or anything for that matter, they're nice generally speaking but just not something I would like enough to buy. I don't know much about the concept Camaro, but as far as exterior design, I'm not liking the retro. I was hoping if anything, they wouldn't give in to the retro "trend" but sales are sales.... Just my opinion, and personally, I wouldn't buy a V6 either.

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, but men buy V6s. It's also misguided to think that a car has to be "cute" for a woman to buy it.
Consider these items:
1) In 2001 & 2002, more MEN bought V6 Mustangs than V8 Camaros (well over twice the number of men bought V8 Mustangs than V8 Camaros & Firebirds combined!).
2) Guys who buy V6 Mustangs tend to be young guys saving money on insurence, but wanting a new sporty car. After they buy their V6 Mustang, they go to sites like www.v6mustangstuff.com or www.allfordmustangs.com or one of the other many websites that cater to getting more performance out of V6s. Females Mustang buyers were attracted to the price and sporty styling as key reasons for buying.
3) If women wanted a cute car, they'd buy a Beetle or a Thunderbird. Instead, they buy P-R-A-C-T-I-C-A-L vehicles that have alot of value, are safe, and are affordable. "Cute" has nothing to do with it. Minis are "cute", and so were the last Thunderbirds. But far more men bought T-birds, and I can count the number of women I've seen in Minis on one hand.
Bottom line is that if the new Camaro is at the right price, you don't have to drop to the pavement to sit in the thing, and looks as good as everyone is saying (the pictures were very rough by all accounts), then the new Camaro will do very well...... "cute" will have zilch to do with it.
How about this:
*The car with the highest percentage of male buyers is the Acura NSX, at 100% (Viper's is only 97%).
*56% of Mustang V6s go to women, but 60% of Mitsubishi Eclipes go to women, as do 64% of Saturn sedans, & 60% of Rav4s. Mustang V6s and Land Rover Freelanders sell to women in equal percentages.
*Overall, Pontiac sells more cars to women than any other brand (at 53%). Dodge sells cars to more men than any other brand (at 85%!). Yes, this includes imports.
Want a woman's car? Get a Pontiac.
Wanna be a man? Buy a Dodge. ;)
Capn Pete 12-10-2005, 12:17 PM ^ ^ ^ interesting! :)
I agree with you about young GUYS (typically the under 25 crowd) opting for V6 Mustangs / Camaros to save on insurance. I was lucky enough to be in a position to afford (barely, at that) the insurance on my Z28, but otherwise, it wouldn't be a possibility for me (I've had the '02 since I was 20-years-old). When I was pricing insurance, I only found 2 cars MORE expensive than the Z28: a Viper and a Mustang GT:thumb:. However, the cost of a V6 was much less. That's definitely going to put a lot of people off the V8's and onto the V6's .

Big Als Z 12-11-2005, 07:03 PM It all comes in to focus now....
Wow, this couple I know, the girl has a mustang on her back while the bf drives an IROC. She of course drives a Mustang.
turbo96z28 12-11-2005, 08:13 PM This is turbo's girlfriend,
I like the drivers half. That half looks more menacing like the 4th gens. Imagine what that'll look like in your rearview mirror. I like the left foglight better the round one just looks retarded. It doesnt look like the Mustang, but it DOES have the same problem where it looks like someone kicked it up the a$$ really hard. I would give someone the down payment for this if they promised to at least TRY to make my Mustang as fast as his Camaro.
SentimentalValue 12-11-2005, 09:03 PM Showed the pics to 5-6 people at work Friday 1 a woman and the rest guys, and of the guys 3 or them were into cars and the others were guys that buy practical/safe/family type cars b/c they could care less.
Anyways, car guys all liked/loved the pics. One of the guys has a 02 540i and 05 Duramax and says he has been looking for a "Muscle Car/Sports Car" and test drove the GT but didn't really like it, and was actually considering a Vette, but now he might hold off.
The one girl I showed it too said "I like it, It kinda looks like a souped up Vette" I guess that's b/c it has the concept car look?? I dunno... This girl is the sweet quiet type too, from a small Alabama town, that's about to get married have 2.5 kids, and grow old in the town she is from (trying to give you an idea of who's giving the opinions). Though the day she saw my Camaro she told me the story of "When I was 16 my dad bought me a Z28 and about a month later I out-ran the cops (in that same small town) in it, only to get caught by an old lady that got her tag number and gave it to the police... She said she was scared, didn't know what to do and floored it." I bout fell out of my chair when she said that.
And same comment from the "Family Guys" too. Oddly enough they said it kinda looks like a Corvette, and none of these people work around each other and the opinions came at a different time. (One person didn't just say "It looks like a Corvette" and the others agreed).
There was actully no reference to a Mustang...
Haven't shown it to the lady friend yet though, but soon enough.
Dhughesz28 12-11-2005, 09:27 PM I believe this theory is correct...I've talked to so many damn V6 mustang owners and I've never heard,"It's slow" or "It's underpowered". They all think the V6 is FAST...
Of course they say that, you think your actually going to head a mustang dude admitt his car is slow???

question for you...
does your girlfriend have any work done to her mustang, and what year is it?
Does she deny that the Camaro is faster from factory, or has higher modablity factor?

her 89 GT 'vert is bone stock. we just got her 89 LX back from her best friend who had it for a few years and are gonna start getting into it in the spring.
she came clean after the 2nd time she drove my 96 bone stock and said none of her families Mustangs (which included a 69 Mach 1, about 5 Fox-bodys, a 94 GT, a 95 6cyl, a 99 GT 'vert, and an 01 GT) felt that fast stock. she said the Camaro felt smoother and she didn't have any probs with visibilty or a feeling the car was "too big". the 99 GT 'vert now has a Saleen blower on it and 375hp at the wheels and that is the only one she says felt faster than my 96.
the reason she threw the last line in about paying someone the down payment on the 5th gen is because i always joke with her i won't build any of her Stangs to run faster than my Camaros. ;)
skorpion317 12-12-2005, 12:02 AM i showed the pictures to my younger sister. She's 15, and about to get her permit. She likes the car in general, except for the mirrors. Reason? She wouldn't be able to see out of them. It's also a little too long for her tastes - she likes smaller cars. I'll see if i can convince her to get a Camaro when she starts driving :)

SunsetHawkSelena 12-19-2005, 04:51 PM i'm a chick and i like it, but not because it's "cute." i like it because it looks mean and i know i'll be able to whoop some mustang ass in it :D
most chicks like mustangs cuz they don't want a balls-to-the-wall powerful car. they want something they can bring their girlfriends to the mall in. i am not one of those kinda girls.
