New Camaro Interior: Retro or Modern?

I was wondering what people would rather have now that we've seen a rough mock-up of the new car's exterior? I'm all for modern. To me the older interiors didn't have much worth saving except the basic cockpit design and slight wrap-around dash. Definitely not into the '60s interiors which were cheap and spartan.

So, what will it be?

Completely modern interior for me. I don't think I've ever looked at a 1st. gen interior and then looked at my 4th gen's interior and said to myself, "Gee, I wish my Camaro's interior looked like the one in that '69"...I've been in the new 'Stang and I must say that interior, (dash especially), is downright repulsive to me.

I love the GTO interior and only hope it will be much better.

I've never really liked Mustangs' interiors anyways, so I won't let that influence me. Personally, I'd rather move forward than backwards although looking over your shoulder to see where you came from, time to time, is not a bad thing either.

I would like to see something along the lines of the GTO too.

Just make sure it looks nothing like that interior rendering pic, that is the worst interior I have ever seen. It also makes the new Mustang interior look futuristic

The Goat is nice. I especially liked the colored tach, speedo, etc. and two tone interior. Definately a classy looking interior.

I'd go the same theme as the leaked images... modern with heritage cues.

I would say, lets borrow from the blokes down under, the CSV-8 interior looks awesome.

I too believe that having the interior match the exterior, much like in the GTO, would be a good move. It just adds a little extra touch whereas most cars are this color or that color on the inside. Also, i think a little dose of retro would be fine on the inside, otherwise it would seem a little odd, to me at least

I really don't like the dash in the concept drawings.....way to retro-like to me.

Modern is the way to be!

I’ve become semi “ok” with heavily used 1st gen cues on the exterior, but mark my words,

I WILL NOT EXCEPT A RETRO INTERIOR,

I want an all modern layout, nothing less will be exceptable.

I would really like to see a modern interior. Some retro cues would be alright, but nothing that retro. Besides the quality thing, I think the 4th gen interiors were good, with a seating/shifter arrangement like that, and some new guages, I would be fine with it.

One thing I would definetly like to still see on the 5th gen is the continuation of the same 6 guage setup we are familiar with on F-Bodies. I don't like how the GTO has no oil pressure and voltmeter guages. And make sure these guages have numbers on them signifying what you are actually looking at. For example, my friend's SVT Focus has an oil pressure guage, but there are no readings on it anywhere, so you can't really tell what oil psi you are actually at at any given engine speed. I know this is being really picky, but I really like the guages on the 4th gen (for the most part).

One last thing about the guages. Please give the 5th gen a real water temp guage, like the ones the 98s have. I really don't like having an analog idiot light for a water temp guage in my car. Why can't we see what the coolant temp is in realtime? Or, if we have to have the crappy temp guage from the factory, at least make it easy to swap the stock one out for an aftermarket one and keep the stock location.

A mix. But certainly not that dash in the pictures, the steering wheel is cool though.

I just hope the tach is the main part of the dash, with the speedometer smaller and offset to the side.

And that the tach in the 5th gen is actually indicating current RPM, and not lagging behind by a few 100 RPM.

My car is 15 years old and I've never bounced off the rev limiter because of anything like that.

Its something I have heard alot of F-body owners, 4th gen at least, complain about. Especially in first gear. Hell, I have seen it happen in an auto when holding first gear manually.

all cars are going to be like that. it's more a function of how fast your reaction time is, not the tach lagging. if you know how to drive, that won't happen. my friend never seemed to have a problem hitting the rev limiter with his 12 flat '02 SS M6

Find a 4th gen with an aftermarket tach in it, and watch how the stock tach lags behind the aftermarket one. I am not talking about bad shifting here. The stock tach lags.

I agree. I like the general feel of the LT1 Z28's cockpit... It can of course be improved upon, but I think the new car at least has to recreate that wrap around F-16 like feel. :D

I want modern flair in the cockpit. Although a general, modern shape of the early Second Gen would be nice for the dash. I always liked the early second gen dash. It was simple and well laid out.

I agree. I love the wraparound cockpit. Something like the Solstice interior or even along the lines of the 91-96 C4 interior. I like to feel like I am really driving the car and not just some passenger that just steers the vehicle.

Modern. Old interiors were not good. Back then, much less thought was put into interiors with reguards to ergonomics, comfort, materials, quality, and overall design, so why try to copy that?

My vote goes for modern with a little of retro if they have to. I like the cockpit idea of the LT1 Zs myself.

Whatever it is like hopefully it will be good enough not to be torn apart by the mags (although they should consider putting a T or H on the front, because that might help a bit).

I don't think the interior pics were so bad, and I'm sure the production model won't be exactly like that! The guages remind me of 68 Chevelle headlight bezels. I did prefer the round guage pods of 67-68, over the squared off ones in 69 though. Overall I liked what I saw quite a bit, and am very anxious to see the actual concept pics.

My 2 cents..
I don't want something so modern it looks like it belongs on "X-Files", just all modern conveniences with classic styling....NOT RETRO...
All round, efficient, analog-full-gage instrumentation...no freaky square bezels.
I could live with the "Race" style seats, but most probably wouldn't. I'd like the seats "as seen" in Jegs for like, $200, a nice street/race blend, color coded thread/panel-patches etc..would be fine.
Classic touches with a fresh all modern look please!...

and a temp gauge that shows you the REAL temp -- not one that is designed to lie to me.

Amen to that! Please, GM, please keep the 6-gauge setup! And, please preserve the way that the tach and speedo flow into each other, like so many other GM models. Why? Look at the Mustang's (and almost every other recent Ford product's) use of separate, full (and too-small) circles for the tach and speedo. :yuck:

That is a terrible waste of space in the instrument cluster, and that's why Ford had to use such a ridiculously HUGE steering wheel :yuck:--so you could see the gauges through the top half of the wheel. There are many other ways that the new Mustang's interior sucks compared to my '98 Z28, but this is the most important.

Oh...one more thing. If you want to put a little flat spot on the bottom of the steering wheel like the Lambo Gallardo (and a few new VW's), that would be cool too. :D Actually, that'd be bitchin'.

Thanks, GM, for getting the exterior right. Now make us proud of the interior too! And I will buy one, Scout's honor.

Yeah, I already addressed that in post #17 in this thread, but I feel it is definetly worth having it said again. I really hate my water temp gauge works in the car. Something tells me that when I am doing 70mph down an open road an it is 15 degrees out that the engine is probably not at 210 degrees.
