Why?

He's one of the best drivers ever....and has the championships to prove it. That and he's sponsored by Chevrolet.

Did you see the "Trading Places" show where he & Juan Montoya traded cars at Indy and after not even been in a F1 car, within a few laps he was lapping fast enough to qualify for an actual F1 race!

I can't understand the haters....good guy, great driver.....just envious I guess.

Gordon is good driver - he's one of the few who in NASCAR can actually drive well on a roadcourse; while the rest of big teams get in the hired guns to do the wheel chores when it comes to the road courses. Gordon's not a dyed in the wool, overweight mullet sporting redneck - reason enough for the haters (who are prone to sport mullets) :).

Well, back in the day Nascar may have been the "redneck" sport or whatever...

But you can't deny it's popularity now. It's blown IRL out of the water, and F1 what?

I didn't say NASCAR is exclusively a redneck sport and you're right it's audience is now somewhat diverse. But there are still a large number of fans who are complete rednecks and they tend to be the haters of the clean-cut guys like Gordon.

Not to get off subject but......

With all the old timers retiring, most of of the top guns now are young guys from all over the country and are damn good drivers and can do more than just turn left. They've really helped changed the image of the sport.

I kinda wish Nascar implemented a little more tech into their motors though. They really can nail down the aerodynamics (well, the race teams can anyway) but I think it would attract more fans if they lightened up a bit on the restrictions and let the manufacturers bring the biggest guns they had to the table.

Also, IRL has floundered since day one with the hostile split between Cart and IRL and then the IRL getting the Indy 500. And F1 may not be popular here, but overseas countries take alot of pride in their drivers and manufacturers that compete in that highly technical and competitive series. The steering wheel alone in those cars are engineering marvels, giving the driver complete control over most aspects of the car.

F1 is much more popular than NASCAR, although that might not be the case if we limit ourself the the US. (It is the third largest sporting event series following the Olympics and World Cup soccer).

I'll be watching just to laugh at some guy, that can't drive, run:

0-60 in 3.7 secs

1/4 mile: 12.2@128mph. :p

I would much rather go pay to watch my buddy drive HIS ARCA 4banger around a 1/4 mile oval track then watch a NA_CAR race for free!!!

I find F1 vastly more entertaining as well. Those machines are mechanical pieces of artwork.

Well to me my favorite racing is the local sprints and midgets.

My problem with F1 and IRL is there is too much money involved. Nascar is starting to get that bad now that all the big guys have gotten in it so I'm not even liking it as much now.

And I agree F1 is very popular worldwide, but not really here. American Football is one of the favorite sports in this country, but looked upon as stupid in the rest of the worlds eyes so I don't really give two turds about what is thought outside of here.

I'll just have to keep going to the local tracks I guess... ;)

F1 is indeed more popular world-wide. Fortunately for me, I don't live in world-wide (nor really care about it from a sporting perspective). I live in the USA, and on our little piece of the earth, NASCAR is by for the most popular motorsport around. Nothing else even comes close.

I kinda wish Nascar implemented a little more tech into their motors though.

You mean something really cool like making the GMs run an LS series motor, Ford run 3 or 4v mod motors and making DCX run hemis, naw that would make them something closer to a "real" stock car. Or screw it, how bout mandating that a stock body shell had to be run with minimal aero aid. IMO nascar is about as real as pro wrestling.

Hey Doug,

I have been registered on this board for a long time but hardly post here if ever. I came back to try to sell this 9 second Formula I acquired.

How you been? I'm doing great. Just living single and playing with my Corvettes.

It was kind of weak. It was mostly the guys just blabbering on about how cool they thought it was. Only one burnout that I remember and not much else. It was basically a 30 minute commercial for the corvette brand.

Yep, pretty much.
