I guess I don't get these... If a business can't continue to operate, what is to stop it from these two items?

Unclear to me ...

Is this what Delphi is asking for or or a deal that has been reached?

Edit: Found that this is what Delphi is asking for.

IMO, far away from where this is playing out, the sooner the UAW and its membership realizes that the American auto industry is just "another manufacturing job" and not a "gravy train", the better off everyone will be. It's much better to be working for $18 an hour than to be without work or paycheck @ $30 per hour.

Sorry, yeah this was the list of "wants". The UAW has not agreed to anything yet. Even if they got all of this though, Delphi says it will still need help from GM.

Re: UAW releases Delphi's list of concessions

I have a question, what is production labourer and skilled tradesmen earning now?

If it is $20 and $30, going down to $12 and $19 will not be easy. I was just curious...

Average pay is $27 per hour.

$12 is a disaster.

In response to Kris: the UAW contract with GM states that no factories can be closed. GM cant wait until the contract is up in Sept 07 to close factories and the UAW wont let them close early. GM is down to under 25% of market now and MUST close factories. UAW wont give in. If GM declared bankruptsy, the labor contracts would be voided. Hmmmmm

It is becoming more and more clear to me that the UAW is the bacteria of the auto industry. By not allowing concessions, they'll only be putting themselves out of a job.

Today's issue of the Wall Street Journal has an article in there about the Delphi situation. I was somewhat in shock as I read it. It says:

This would be done by a host of moves such s trimming wages to about $10 an hour and eliminating cost-of-living allowances, the letter said. It also includes eliminating the Jobs Bank- the program under which workers on longer-term layoff continue to get full pay - plus reducing the union health-care plan and trimming vacations and holidays, according to the letter.
$65 an hour!

There was an article in the Detroit News a week or so ago (sorry, can't find link) about a forklift operator who made over $100,000 with overtime. The story was about bankruptcies now that many UAW employees are not able to work overtime, yet had their standard of living geared towards making 6 figures.

No doubt GM is very anxious about how this turns out. On one hand if Delphi prevails over the UAW, then it might pave the way for more concessions with GM's contract. On the other hand, if Delphi and the union can't come to a resolution, GM faces trouble on two fronts: they may have to take back thousands of Delphi employees; and if Delphi declares bankruptcy, they could face major problem with getting parts to their factories.
