Headers question and exhaust options?

Why do I keep hearing that Headers from a '94-'97 Z-28 will not fit a '93 Z-28? I have found some good deals on alot of headers for a '94... WHY WON"T THEY WORK?!?!? Can I make them work? The emmisions stuff doesn't really matter to me, as long as it has the o2 sensor bung.

Also, are we limited to a crossflow type of muffler? Or a muffler that tucks up in back? I want to get a pair of LT's and run the exhaust straight back to a pair of mufflers, then have turn downs before the axel that slightly turn out-ward, but not anything that sticks out by the wheel. Want to keep it close to the center of the car.

I've searched on this stuff, but weeding through all those posts to get answers that I am looking for gets old quick.

I appreciate any help and advice!

Emissions hookups should be the only difference between the years of headers. If you are looking at emissions-free headers, they should come up as "93-97".

Your proposed exhaust setup is possible, I'm sure that some of the 'money challenged' members of the board are using it. Should be easy to set it up yourself without worrying about getting a shop to put on tailpipes.

The only thing I would worry about is the noise. The exhaust bouncing around under the car will be much louder (as heard inside your car) than turning the exhaust out. I had an 85 cavalier with the exhaust dumping under the car, and it was WAYYYY louder than the Z28 is now. You might also get fumes floating up into the windows. With the turn outs they are pushed away with the force of the exhaust, in your case they'll build up while you're sitting at a light and start burning your eyes :P Just something to think about.

I know all about the noise. I have my exhause dumped right at the rear axel right now. Its louder in the car than out. I'm pretty used to it now though. Road trips are a pain in the azz though. Headaches. Thanks mourningyou!

do you mean true duals like these from Lanes? (http://www.lanesperformance.com/custom_duals.html)

doesn't that cross/intersection of the exhaust mess with the flow and restrict the performance of the true duals?

doesn't that cross/intersection of the exhaust mess with the flow and restrict the performance of the true duals? No, it actually helps scavenge the exhaust by equalizing the pressure and increasing velocity through the pipes. you have to remember that each cylinder puffs out an exhaust pulse at a different time, and when you bring them to the x-pipe they are all basically lining up in sequence and flowing out as a single unit. it makes alot more power than a truly sperate dual exhaust setup and sounds better as well
