Heater problem

Not that you'd need too much heater in the 100 degree weather currently going on here in TX :rolleyes:, but the car is going somewhere cold, so I need to get it working...

The car in question is a 95 TA and the heater does not blow hot. Just the regular lukewarm you get in this heat without the AC on.

I took the hoses off the heater core and flushed it and got a bunch of nasty looking water out of there, but that didn't help. The core is not leaking, either, so I'm assuming I don't need to touch that any further.

When I had the hoses off the core, I fired up the engine, put the heater on and there wasn't really too much coolant flowing towards the core. I was expecting to see coolant flowing from the hose quite freely, but no.

So..., is there a valve, or something like that that would cut the flow of coolant to the heater core? Or could it be that the waterpump is not making enough pressure to move the water all the way?

There was coolant in the lines and inside the core when I took the lines off and flushed it, so at least some goes in these at some point.

Any and all help/suggestions are greatly appreciated. :bow:

I'm guessing you have a clog somewhere that you didn't get out, how hot does the car run? If its staying cool I'd lean towards the heater core.

Temp gauge reads pretty much normal.

I think I read from somewhere that there is some kind of device which controls the air flow. Heater control valve?

Not a heater control valve, but just the mixing door inside the car that causes air to flow through the heater core. It is cable controlled by the dash temp knob. You should feel a little resistance when operating it and even more resistance when the blower is on full blast.

Just to be sure your heater core is not still a problem, feel both heater hoses at the firewall after the engine is at operating temperature. If one of them seems colder, you are not getting circulation through the core.

Yeah, I'll have to still concentrate on the core a bit more.

However... What would be the cause for the fact that there wasn't much, if at all, coolant coming from the lines when I had the engine running while the hoses were disconnected from the heater core?

Did you flush those hoses, too? There is a flow reducer on one of the hoses.

There's not really a way to flush those, since they go back towards the radiator. And the other one is connected with a crushed connector (or what ever it is called...) to a hard line going towards the front of the car.

If you look closer, they both connect to the water pump with hose clamps. Detach the hoses there and flush them out.

That's actually the easiest way, IMO. It gets the hoses and the core flushed. Just keep water off the opti.

I had this problem on a 96 Z28. I had to end up replacing the heater core.

Since I already flushed the core, I guess I'll just take them off from both ends and try it that way...

Or maybe I'll just go and get a new core and go that route first... :shrug: :confused:

Usually mentioned in these type of threads but I haven't seen yet is - did you back flush the heater core? Flush water in and out of both hoses.

I s there a step by step to replace the core, it looks like alot of things have to come off before you get to the core?

Not really, that I recall. It's actually like my Ranger. Undo a few screws, pull hatch out of the way, pull core...after undoing hoses, of course. No messing with the whole freaking dash, at least on a 95 Camaro, that is.

Seriously, a 10-year old core needs to be tossed anyway. A lot of crap will sit in that and never come out anyway. I have to pull that deed with the Ranger sooner than later...flushed the cooling system, but the SOB is still only giving out lukewarm heat, everything else is good at that...
