Cylinder Head/Valvetrain FAQ - Need Questions...

Hey guys.. like it says..

Last year I wanted to do this, but never had the time.. this year I'm a little more focused ;).

What I need to know is.. what confuses people about cylinder heads? There's an appaling amount of BS that shops tell customers under the guise of "marketing" and it seems like alot of people have the same basic questions.

I'm basically looking for specific questions (what, when, why, etc.) regarding components, machining, intended use (of components), testing procedures, etc.

I'm sorry I wont be answering the questions in this thread.. but I'm going to save them all and try to add the pertinent stuff to a cylinder head FAQ. It'll take me awhile to do it and produce coherent, quantitative answers and whatnot, but I'd like to get it done and up in the next couple weeks :)

So... post yer questions if ya dont mind.. stuff like:

What do flow #s mean and how are they measured?
How do different bores affect flow numbers?
Is it possible for heads with lower PEAK flow numbers to actually make more power?
What makes velocity important?

Thanks :)

Mine would be more general & less technical - such as:

How do you know how much to open the ports ?

Can you change valve sizes, and if so, how do you determine what size is best ?

Valve springs - what is best ?

Some off the cuff ideas - you examples were actually pretty good !

One technical one for the LS1 is:

Since the heads have a negative deck height (the top of the piston is actually into the head @ TDC) , how do they compensate for that when head machining that affects height is required ?

I think the answer is a thicker head gasket, but am curious.

O.K. - I have put my ignorance in electronic format for all of CamaroZ28 to see :p -

Next !! :D

Phil,

Can you say something about how cam selection affects what type of heads are needed. Maybe some basic cam info as well for a newbies. Actually any information would be great lol.
