Test mules of the next Volvo S80 were caught this week north of Phoenix. Sharing platform components with the Ford Five Hundred, Ford Freestyle, and Mercury Montego, the upcoming S80 will be offered with a variety of engines, including the 315-horsepower Yamaha-engineered 4.4-liter V-8 and a new generation of Volvo-designed in-line six-cylinder engines with the top-of-the-range turbo pumping out 350 horsepower.
In addition to the S80, there is a possibility that Volvo will bring back the V90 wagon, which could follow the S80 by six months.

pics below. There's too much plastic and tape in the way, but you can tell it's a volvo. The 350hp turbo 3.0L I-6 and 315hp 4.4 v8 sound like strong motors. Hopefully this'll trickle down to the Ford five hundred if Ford were to ever consider doing an SVT version of it. Imo, the 315hp 4.4 or 350hp 3.0L I6 would make the 500 10x more appealing. Especially now that the Ls4 is available on the Impala's and DCX offers the Hemi on their Lx cars. Right now, the 203hp 3.0 duratec v6 in the 500 is downright pathetic and the upcoming 3.5L duratec (with sub-250hp) will only be decent. Since the 500 shares platforms with this S80, the motors and such should bolt right in without too much trouble.
