If you're not going to replace the entire POS factory stereo you should just go to your local dealer and buy factory replacement speakers. Due to the screwed up design of the POS Monsoon system there is nothing to be gained by replacing the speakers with high quality after-market speakers.

don't mean to hijack the thread, but it's related

is there anything that sounds halfway decent...

not a huge music fan, just sick of having the front speakers turned off since both doors are blown.

i know since monsoon is 2ohm and aftermarket are all 4ohm...they will sound like they have 1/2 the power.
BUT will it just be quieter? or will the sound be crappy like a busted speaker?

i blew 3 stock speakers in about a year...to hell with spending the $$ on those again.

if i keep my stock headunit...what would i need to buy to replace all the speakers? just an amp, speakers and wires?

yes thats all u need, but honestly you can replace the stock headunit and get decent speakers without an amp for less and it will still sound nicer then stock or do it right get an amp deck and speakers and it will be bliss

Yeah, I've been doing further research into this, GM can be such a pain in the rear. I definately want to scrap the entire stereo system now but now have the added delima of choosing an after market setup.

If I get a new H/U, and new front speakers. Will the factory rears work with the new head unit?

The factory rears will work with an adapter for the monsoon system honestly just spend a few bucks and replace them adapter to integrate monsoon + maybe 20 bucks gets u a decenet set of speakers.... A buddy had monsoon and this is what i replaced it all with and he says it sounds way better then monsoon ever did... http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIODEH2700?vq_id=none for a cd player and for speakers we used http://www.cardomain.com/item/INFREF6012I but we got our hands on last years models which are cheaper and basically the same... i put an entry level alpine and these speakers http://www.thezeb.com/p-CDT-Audio-CL-6X-6-1-2-inch-Full-Range-Speakers-101087.htm he was quite happy with it personally I like CDT a bit more but many ppl that are new to the stereo world have heard infinity... ask all the questions u want me and others will be more then willing to help

So all I'd need is an adaptor for the factory rears to work with the new H/U? Where would I buy this adapter, and how many would I need for the 2 mid-rear speakers? (ill take your advice and disconnect the rear hatchback speakers)

I am sorry I am confused by your post. Maybe I was unclear which makes u unclear lol... In order to keep any of the factory speakers you need a monsoon/bose adapter thingy persoanlly i hate them all... what i would recommend doing is new speakers in front, new in the rear passenger seats and unhooking the hatch speakers like all the way in the trunk, then no adapter needed and beautiful sounds from your car... hopefully maybe that clarifys what i posted earlier

Yeah, there is no point in going through all the hoops to keep any of the Monsoon or Bose components. Scrap them all, and go with aftermarket. The sound quality and power handling will be 10 times better.

you guys think these cars are bad for upgrading... my buddy has a 97 or 98 taurus sho ford i know... the factory deck is molded into the electronic climate controls and he will have to get something fiberglassed so he can get his new HU in the dash... as well its all one piece so electronic work will be involved and the piece in the dash is just a control the actual tuner/amp is in the trunk... talk about pain in the rear... ill take a monsoon/bose upgrade any day over that car

Penta

that first hu you list, it says "45 watts x 4"

does that mean 45watt output to 4 speakers?

how would i go about running 6 speakers? is that where i put an amp on the lines running to the rear. boosting the power so each of the 4 rear speakers gets more power?

pardon the lack of knowledge....when it comes to car audio...my knowledge ends at "turn radio on, insert CD, adjust volumn"

i can change a clutch and rebuild an engine...but audio...

what exactly are u looking to do, upgrade, and gain

i'm not an audiophile..

i just want a nice sounding stereo for cruising. no mega-bass or **** you can hear for a block.

just something to listen to music with enough power and clearity to be heard over the lope of the cam, the rumble of true duals, and the wind from the open ttops
;)

4 speakers would probably work fine, but i'd maybe like the option to upgrade to some hatch speakers or a small base (maybe a 6" sub) for the rear trunk hole (still need to fit the ttops in it though).

sry u probally posted this already, but were you looking to replace the factory deck or not, as well did you want to amp the front speakers its honestly the best way to allow it to sound clean and loud

penta and i have been chatting over PM so i figured i would share some of his knowledge and info that he's given me.

as of right now i have not picked out any brands, but the general idea is this:

gut the stock system

install a new headunit, 4channel amp, a nice set of woofer/tweeters for the doors powered by the amp. then standard speakers in the sail panels run off the HU.

and if i understand correctly...i can run a small sub off the remaining 2 channels on the amp.

this should fit my requirements well...not a ton of base, just nice clean, audible sound with the motor roaring and ttops off.

how much would a setup like that cost? Right now the driver door spkr is out and everything else is rattling like crazy and I want it to stop. Thanks.
