anyone else want the Mustang to really do good??
I mean the next mustang..you want it to be like the original and sell hundreds of thousands..loke 200K the first year?? I DO..why..basically to send a message to everyone GM included that Muscle cars are still being bought..Mustang is the last of its kind and a strong one at it..I myeself would love to buy a new Mustang if I could..why not..brand new muscle car..and puts a message to all the "look fast" body kits that the import guys are putting out ..not saying there are not fast imports..the new 350Z or the WRX..but a NEW stang how can you go wrong??
GM might lsten then and D/C might step up to the plate more than it already is
people want RWD performance again..for everything economy to luxury..we just were weened off it in the 80's..trust me..

I want it to do good... if Mustang fails, I think that makes GM less likely to build another Camaro.
I hate retro styling, and I think it will turn off more people than it will turn on... especially after you see a a lot on the road, and they become commonplace.

I hope they sell by the million
Then Ford will mnake another Mustang. By the time chevy comes out with the next Camaro a lot of damage will have already been done. Mustang guys will still be able to go buy mustangs when they are ready. Chevy will loose some of its customer base by not having a camaro to buy for a few years. My guess is that when the 5th gen comes out it will have a great 1st year followed by a crappy few until they can take some import buyers away.

I would be really happy if it sold like the original (1.2 million in 2 years). Imagine every new Accord and Camry replaced with a Mustang. That's what it must have looked like at the end of 1966!
Ford intends a pretty big introductory bash for the Mustang. As long as they don't do any Thunderbird-type screwups, or try to break Focus' recall record, I think this will likely become (especially with NO competition from GM) the best selling Mustang since the original, especially since all we've been hearing from anyone whose seen it is that it's a traffic-stopper.

The best possible outcome of the redesign would be deep-sixing the SVT dealer franchises - I don't have the patience to drive 100 miles just to testdrive a Cobra, let alone buy one. The closest BMW dealer is just 50 miles away - factor in the top drawer build quality and slick gearchange, and I'd gladly shell out the extra money for an M3.
To be realistic, I don't see Ford delivering the goods with the new Mustang. I've witnessed too many design gaffs and quality defects to feel any real optimism. Sure, the Mustang will sell fairly well, regardless of any shortcomings, but don't expect new sales records. If anything, the absence of any meaningful direct competition tends to shrink the overall size of any market segment.
(If you look closely at the monopoly held by the Crown Vic/Marquis/Town Car, what you'll see is a long glide slope towards eventual extinction. Marauder enthusiast should take note that these cars are piling up in dealer inventory, just like the "hot" Thunderbird.)

There's an awful lot of "ifs" involved in this scenario. Ford needs a better level of fit and finish in the new Mustang, better than even the Lincoln LS, if you ask me. Moreover, they need to update their slushbox, take the distortion out of their factory sound systems, and offer a more credible Mustang GT replacement.

I don't see how you feel the overall size of the market segment will shrink w/o competition. After Javelin, Barracuda, Challenger, & Mustang (via the MustangII) pulled out of the sport coupe market in the 70s, it exploded. Thunderbird sales spiked in 1988 after GM switched their personal luxury coupes to FWD. Ditto Crown Vic after GM abandoned the market & Monte Carlo after the SN95 was pulled. Combine a entirely new design with the fact that it's competition died, sounds like a potential winner.
I'm glad you'd fork out the extra money for an M3 over the Cobra. At $45,900 base price compared to Cobra's $35,000, I'm guessing price and performance value is not a priority in your case. I don't think there's a person on this site who wouldn't buy an M3 if they could afford it, it's just....well.....we can't.

With the Crown Victoria dating back more than a few years (and the chassis reaching back more than 25 years ago (!), it's no wonder there's been a long glide towards extinction...their customers are dying out (why they came out with Maurader..I'm not joking).

As far as the M3, yeah its more expensive, but not as much as you might think. If you purchase the M3, or any BMW, through European Delivery you get a substantial non-negotiable discount, and you pay vastly less in sales tax. Hey, for the price of a cheap airline ticket you can bypass dealer gouging and allocation worries. I'd gladly pay a few grand extra not to get hastled by a SVT dealer.
That said, I prefer my current Z28 to both the Cobra and the M3. A Rolex is pretty, but does it keep better time than my beaten-up quartz watch?

You sure have a long memory, and yes, most of your points are right historically. The only problem is, the sales of the new Mustang will probablynot be equal to the sum of the current Mustangs sales and those of the deceased GM F-body. Long term, the lack of competition is going to hurt the last of the muscle cars, not help it.

European delivery may be a better deal over the stateside price, but still, the upfront cost of flying over there, then shipping the car back, seems to be alot of trouble & cost. I don't know what it is now, but back when some of the military folks in Germany were doing it, the savings was only a couple of thousand dollars (no plane ticket needed).
Not doubting you or anything, just playing devil's advocate. I never had to deal with an SVT dealer, and I haven't delt with Ford in about 5 years.
I hope the new Mustang sells well. I have to give Ford some respect. They are still producing a brand-new, RWD, V8 powered muscle car. From what I've heard, the styling will be aggressive as well.
Looks to me like the new Mustang will be an awesome car, and I hope it does well in sales.

I cant belive that we dont have a real pic yet some under paid ported has to have snapped a pic and sold it to someone. I just cant believe that the car exists was transported across the country and there isnt a REAL pic posted on the net yet. I want to see it now. I dont want to wait. I guess thats what I get for being a GEN-Xer and raised on MTV lol!!! I want to see now!!!!
"anyone else want the Mustang to really do good??"
I'd like to see it be a major retro FLOP and I'd like to see the GTO sell every last one so they can make lower budget GTO's like maybe lemans's or tempests but the same body style, so they can sell twice as many the 2nd year and move production to the US for 06-07 selling more each year. But that's all wishful thinking, and I don't expect any of it to happen, except for the part where GTO sells every last one, which they will.
