526 SS 96 08-06-2005, 12:44 PM I have a 1970 trans am, and I was thinking to resore it. For now I would like to get it running, but I can't seem to find any info on these cars. I need specs (head flow/ lift) ect... If anyone can get/direct me to where I can find detailed information on this car I would apreiate it.
IRONFIST 08-06-2005, 09:24 PM Well it all depends on what engine you have? With a TA you can have a 400, a 455? And those came in a few varieties... both round port and D port cylinder heads that year.
Got anymore specs?
If you don't, just tell me the VIN and I'll figure them out for you.
526 SS 96 08-07-2005, 08:52 AM I am pretty sure it's a ram air III. It has an automatic, and it's white with blue interior. It also has 30K original miles, but the car is a disaster. The original owner drove it for a couple of years and just parked it, then some years later they decided to paint it but only endedup removing most of the paint and did nothing else. There are rot holes in the quarters and the rockers, but the hinges are still good and the doors don't sag so I guess that's a plus, and it's #'s matching. I really wanted to know if this car is worth restoring, or should I cut it up and race it. I'll post the VIN in a little bit.

Gearhead 08-07-2005, 09:28 PM IMO, don't cut into it. Those old TAs are worth good money, especially if they are numbers-matching (although I do find it hard to believe you're sure it's numbers-matching but don't know if it's a RA3 or not).
If you want a drag-type car, from a money point of view you'd be better off selling the original TA and buying a plain Firebird. With the "extra" cash you get from the sale, you could do quite a bit to the plain car.
526 SS 96 08-07-2005, 09:57 PM I know it's a numbers matching car because it is all original, whatever it came with is what it has (my late uncle is the original owner). Where is the engine code on the block? I have to get the car in the shop to find out what is all there and what isn't. I should be able to get it looked over in a couple of weeks.

526 SS 96 08-07-2005, 10:53 PM I just figured that if the car would cost $50,000 to restore, and is only worth $25,000 on the market, then what's the point? I really don't know how much it would cost to have a chalk mark resto on a car like that one. One of the cool things is that it still has the paint marks on the inner fenders, and I saw some other marks on the engine. This car does not have A/C, or power windows. I am going to check the tag on the rear end tomarow, it would be easier to get to than the engine. COT is a 3/auto 3.08 RAIII w a/c, & COX is a 3/auto 3.55 RAIV. I got the info from http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/transam.html I don't know how accurate this info is, but it's the best I have seen so far. This is kinda fun, it's my first old car.
Gearhead 08-08-2005, 02:17 AM You can contact Pontiac Historic Services and for a small fee they'll send you the car's option sheet, showing what the car came with originally. That's the best way to see what the car has/is (or see if your uncle has any paperwork on the car, such as window sticker, protectoplate, etc...). What ever route you go, good luck with the car. :)
526 SS 96 08-08-2005, 02:34 AM Thanks gearhead. I don't have any documentation on the car, my uncle died about 6 years ago. After I bought the car from the estate sale I just put it in a gerage and left it. If I get lucky I will find the build sheet. I will keep you guys posted on the developments of the car's identity.
