weird oil pressure problem

hi :D

i am having a weird oil pressure problem on my 383. its brand new, cola crank, eagle rods, JE pistons. moroso anti-cav pump, stock oil pan.

Everything is fine, cept that if I rev it out to say 5k (not even full throttle, just 1/4 throttle) and let off, oil pressure drops to zero - and stays there- for several seconds. oil pressure comes up instantly on cold start, and it always ok just cruising around. it is also ok under braking (ruling out the pickup falling off, which i welded anyway)

if I just rev it un netural, its fine. so it seems to be either acceleration or load based.

the whole motor is new.

any ideas???? I am about to drop the pan and check stuff out...

my guess is the pickup tube

Check basics:
Oil level
assuming your baffels work proparly in the pan
Then pump tube as the other guy said...if that ok
If everything is draining back to the pan ok then...somewhat rare but your not sucking the pan dry are u. My machinist said sometimes when they ran a big block pump on a small block it would suck the pan dry...

1st establish correct oil pressure and DO NOT run the car untill you know for sure, drop the pain check the pickup etc.

Did you check how far the pick-up is from the bottom of the pan?

do u have a high pressure pump? if so u can be draining the pan?

my guess was going to be the pickup tune to pan distance, but its odd it doesnt do it when just reving in gear.

I guess maybe the oil demand for the motor increases with load?

Cam bearings, been there, done that.

Do you have a windage tray or did you toss that and now you are running the stock pan without the stock tray or a aftermarket one....

If you add oil it will make the problem worse, or a high volume pump. Just put a windage tray back in there if it's not now and the problem will be solved.

Aye, chalk up another for cam bearings. I just went thru that.

How many miles does it have on it?

Motor has like 5 miles on it, all brand new(including cam bearings)

no windage tray, standard vol pump,

Put the tray back in and look for any silver and copper spects in the pan while ya got it off.

Stock pan? If so oil could be climbing rear of pan if thats the case you need the moroso piece that goes between oil pump and block. It acts like a dam preventing oil from climbing under acceleration.

BINGO! and it's a stock pan to boot probably.

Throw even the stock cheap windage tray in there and you should solve that problem, it's not cam bearings unless the cam was out of spec for journal size.

windage tray requires different mounting hardware, so if you used ARP bolts or such, you are kinda SOL. I would put a canton pan on it, since you gotta drop the pan anyway.

Unless moroso, or somebody makes another easier alternative. But the canton pans work well, have built in scraper/screen

Unless moroso, or somebody makes another easier alternative. The only alternative would be a Canton or Stef's screen type windage tray that you bolt or weld onto the pan. But that's really more work than just getting a pan with it on there already, unless you already have a good pan and a welder and want to save a few bux.

You can use the stock windage tray with ARP bolts, You just have to get the right ones, I'm using the windage tray with HV pump with ARP bolts and stock pan on my 385. Here's a pic http://www.cardomain.com/ride/624351/1

I know for sure on my 93LT1 that the pickup was too close to the pan and it did the excact same thing!!

dont know if you have concidered this but have you checked the crankshaft endplay, on some manual cars the constant depressing of the clutch can cause some play in the crank and is apparent if oil pressure drops under WOT
