RX-8 -> not enough zoom zoom for an LT1

Dropping off my gf one night (dont all kill stories start this way?) I spot an RX8 with two guys in it driving "aggresively". Instead of turning off to my gf's street, I decide to continue going on the road to see if he will go for it. The driver takes a look at me, then makes the first move by jumping into the clear lane that was between us. I slip in behind him, and when a lane is clear, pull out to the left then go WOT in 3rd. To say it was beat down would be an understatement. I think rsx's are faster then these rx8's. I kept the hammer down to about 160 kph through a slight curve and then pulled into the left turn lane. There was so much distance between us that I was almost able to come to a complete stop for my turn when he finally caught up. The funniest thing is, he turned his flashers on as he passed me haha.

My car is a m6 94 z28 with cai, !muffler, free mods, ls1 driveshaft, and a decent bit of suspenion goodies. I trap 103 mph.

similar experience with similar car, back of my mind I wondered if the new RX-8's were turbo, apparently not. I had one try to do a surprise fly by. I stopped his pull and showed briefly I was going to leave him.

no zoom zoom, the car is very busy looking not pleasing to the eye IMO.

rotary engines really arn't that powerful. The cars have more HP than torque, by a sizable margin. I've heard they're "fun to drive" I assume that's just a small car w/RWD thing.

It would be a good platform for a REAL engine, to be sure.

so true. sometimes, i think about building a 2nd gen rx7 with a lt1/ls1 engine. it would be nasty having a real motor in a 2600 lb car like that.

Good kill. Rotorary engines are a joke, I don't see what Mazda sees in them; slower, weaker, smaller with poorer gas mileage! Way to go.

Don't forget regular oil consumption and horrible reliablity.

...and I don't even want to know how expensive they would be to get worked on.

Both RX8 and RSX are very underpowered. But both will claim they will eat you alive in the twisties and thats about all they've got. Sadly enough, the public streets are not race courses.

I wasn't overly impressed with the RX8 that I drove either. Although, in terms of weight distribution, it's impressive (almost 50/50); but as far as straight line performance, I wasn't impressed.

haha. a boot 160-180 kph then held that steady through the corner, eh.

its all about the hp/litre. everyone knows that this is the most important metric when discussing cars. screw power to weight, fuel efficiency, torque curve, etc.

ive raced both at shannonville (local roadcourse). The rsx was on r-compounds while I was on street rubber on the 'shooters. Admittedly, he was a bit faster on the tight infield section.. but as long as I hung with him to be within sight of the two straights, it was game over for him. Same goes for the RX8
