buzz12586 07-24-2005, 03:48 PM I need a new clutch for my 95 Z28 but I haven't heard convincing evidence ethier way on which one to get. I don't want to McCould twin disk because it is $1000. I was looking at the single disk kit that they sell which would be around $550 or so. The SPEC clutch I was looking at was the Stage 3 which sells for around $530 and says it will support 680hp. How much will the McCloud single disk hold?? Which one do you reccomend??
JustNO 07-24-2005, 03:51 PM Why is it not Mcleod Twin Disc?
buzz12586 07-24-2005, 03:57 PM Because I don't have $1000 to spend on a clutch and I am not going to be putting down huge amounts of power. I just need something better than a stock clutch. Headers and 100shot will be going on within the next year but that is pretty much the extent of the mods I will do for a while.
JustNO 07-24-2005, 04:00 PM I decided to go with spec 3 with aluminum flywheel for my ~550hp (at flywheel) lt1.. But then I changed my mind and choosed Mcleod Street twin with Mcleod Aluminum Flywheel because in future I will get blower and I don't want to change my clutch again..
JustNO 07-24-2005, 04:02 PM Then you will be okay with spec 3 even spec 2 will be good for your application..
CustomSSI 07-24-2005, 04:04 PM First off what style of driving do you do? Alot of city stop/go driving? The spec stage 3 we would be able to get to you for under $500 if that makes any diffrerence in your choice. Both are quality clutches, if you don't do alot of city driving though you may look at even going with a spec stage 4, if your planning on heads/cam later on. Anymore questions feel free to contact us.

buzz12586 07-24-2005, 04:06 PM It is pretty much all city stop and go driving. I race almost nightly and at the track at least twice a month so it needs to hold up to launches on drag radials. If you can get it to me for under $500 that would be amazing.
CustomSSI 07-24-2005, 04:16 PM PMed you.

disco192 07-24-2005, 05:10 PM Have you thought about Ram clutches at all? You can get them alot cheaper than SPEC. I have the Powergrip HD (comparable to Spec 4) and it is a hell of a clutch IMO. Holds all my power perfectly and Im running quite a bit of power.
buzz12586 07-24-2005, 05:20 PM I haven't heard much about them at all. Does anyone else have a Ram Clutch???
ZMAN Z28 07-24-2005, 05:45 PM I had a Ram clutch once. It worked great. I'm on my 5th clutch. The Ram was my 3rd clutch. Right now I go with what ever is in stock vendor wise but it has to match my power rating also.

slverbullet 07-24-2005, 07:41 PM ack! i hated my spec stage 3. it was horrible for a daily driver. mine pretty much had a stop and go "only" option. easing off the clutch to take off slowly sucked. prepare to have one monster left leg. do a search on this clutch before you go buying it. dont just take my word for it.
btw- i talked to another guy at the track on friday who claimed to have gone through 3 or 4 spec stage 3's within their warranty period and claimed they were all crap. one didnt even last a month with a couple good launches on it. this is all my personal opinion and that of a few others. do a search and see what the common opinion is on the spec clutch.
Injuneer 07-24-2005, 08:26 PM We have specific fourms for specific topics..... a "clutch" poll doesn't belong on LT1 Engine Tech. Moving to "Drivetrain".
buzz12586 07-24-2005, 09:12 PM Sorry but nothing gets looked at in the "Drivetrain" section. I actually wanted people to respond to this.

Maybe if people followed the rules, there would be good coverage on all forums. To say "nothing gets looked at" is simply foolish..... many of us come here all the time to help out.
Being selfish and posting on the wrong forum forced the valid posts by people who were following the rules off the screen, short changing them.
If you don't like the rules, feel free to express yourself to Jason or Chris.......
rskrause 07-25-2005, 07:57 AM Why not a stock clutch? It's pretty damn good.

buzz12586 07-25-2005, 11:44 AM It doesn't like to be slipped a lot like I have to do with my DRs. Plus I launch my car quite a bit and just want something that is gonna last longer.
AlexDeGruven 07-25-2005, 12:58 PM Why not a stock clutch? It's pretty damn good.
I have to agree with the poster. If all you're doing is daily driving, the stock clutch is fine.
I work mine pretty hard, and I'm paying the price for it (got a major slip the other day @ 42,000 miles).
disco192 07-25-2005, 03:08 PM I prefer the feel personally of a tough clutch. To say that a SPEC 3 is on/off then there must be a problem. You should try a sintered iron clutch. You probably didnt set up the clutch right or the machinist took too much off the flywheel. A spec 3 should be just a little tougher than stock. I have noticed that clutches that engage later tend to be harder to control. Mine engages on the floor and I love it.
Mikey97Z 07-25-2005, 03:25 PM I've had Spec Stage III for 2 years. I drove it daily in stop and go traffic for over 1 year, no problems. Several trips to the track, launching at 4k on slicks, no problems. Still drives great on the street. You should think about the Stage 4 because it will be stronger without the springs in the hub. I hear it drives just the same as the 3.
buzz12586 07-25-2005, 04:03 PM It all the descriptions it says the the stage 4 is pretty much for track use only because it has a stiffer pedal feel. If it drives the same as the stage 3 than I would pick up the stage 4 if it is going to last longer.
disco192 07-25-2005, 04:17 PM AFAIK, a stage 4 would not drive anything like a stage 3. Tougher disk, no springs, stiffer pedal....... not saying that you cant use it for the street, because everyone has different opinions on "streetable"
IMO its better to get a clutch that is too much than one that isnt enough. But, you wont need anything more than a spec 3 unless you run some serious power.
buzz12586 07-25-2005, 06:28 PM I won't be making huge amounts of power for at least a couple of years and by then I should have enough money to buy whatever clutch I want. Sounds like I will be going with the SPEC Stage 3.
CustomSSI 07-25-2005, 07:07 PM Stage 3 is agood choice, if you do alot of racing though i'd say stage 4 but they do start to suck in stop/go traffic. But then again any manula tranny does ...

buzz12586 07-25-2005, 08:00 PM Now I just have to see how much money I get this week. Thanks for all the help guys.
Josh'95Z28conv 07-25-2005, 11:11 PM I will never again buy a spec clutch with a sprung hub. I just ordered my stage 4 on friday, only because I got it for under 1/2 price. They gave me a deal because I bought one of their crap sprung hub clutches, and it failed.
Id go with a stocker before I went with another spec stage 2/3. The ONLY thing spec has going for them is their customer service. Ill admit thats good.
Im going to be driving my stage 4 in bumper to bumper city traffic too. We'll see how it goes. I only drive it once a month or so anyway.
