brxxt 07-24-2005, 12:19 PM NO MORE VIBRATIONS FINALLY!
The car used to vibrate around 90mph+ then i got 4.10's and it started vibrating at 70mph+ like a BITCH
Just test drove it up to about 95mph w/ the ls1 aluminum driveshaft, honestly feels like a new car! So smooth.
Oh and the gear whine seems to have decreased significantly which is an awesome plus...
Just thought i'd post good news for once lol
seawolf06 07-24-2005, 03:32 PM is this a direct bolt-in? if not, what adjustments did you have to make? did you reuse the old u-joints?
chevelles101 07-24-2005, 03:51 PM yeah i would like to know if you were able to use your old u-joints as well
Mike94ZLT1 07-25-2005, 01:44 AM Yes, it bolts in. Yes, you can re-use your stock u-joints, but replacing them is a good idea
brxxt 07-25-2005, 05:32 AM Yea mine came w/ the u-joints but u can use old one, i would also recommend new ones tho...

EXACT same situation happened to me... got the LS1 D.S. and car is SO smooth at 90 MPH+ had her up to 135 the other day against a 2005 G35 and vibration was only felt in the shift knob...
2000GTP 07-25-2005, 09:10 PM Can the LS1 driveshaft work on a LT-1 A4 car??
brxxt 07-25-2005, 09:22 PM Yes it can on an A4, and i took it up to 120mph today and no vibrations at all, cept the cutout of course :)
CreatiVe2 07-25-2005, 10:16 PM 3" aluminum (LS1) driveshafts can work in any 93 - 98 F body (I heard it also might be do-able from 82 up) and also the newer V6's i think have a 2 part driveshaft, and i am not sur eif any modification is needed for that application.
seawolf06 07-26-2005, 12:01 AM would you have to get a driveshaft for an M6 from an M6 only or are they interchangable between trannys too?
IrocSS85 07-26-2005, 09:41 PM totally interchangeable between the a4 cars and m6 cars. the only diff. is the m6 cars had a cardboard liner inside the shaft to deaden rear gear noise and trans. gear noise. (the alum. shaft amplifies gear noise.)
and they will not fit the v6 cars Im pretty sure.
97FormulaWS-6 07-29-2005, 05:27 PM Damn.. .you're lucky along with a lot of other people on this board... It didn't fix my vibration issue... I ended up selling mine and having a Denny's NR shaft built... no issues since, and she's seen the high side of 145 a few times...
seawolf06 07-29-2005, 05:28 PM how much are LS1 driveshafts going for used and new? are the m6 ones usually more? i'm now looking around for one, but i don't wanna get ripped off. how many miles on these are too many?
brxxt 07-29-2005, 06:23 PM i got mine from a guy named john, his email addresses areb lt1bluebird@yahoo.com and mylt1bluebird@yahoo.com tell him Brenton referred u. Mine came perfectly balanced and in great shape, 150 shipped which is the basic price you'll find...
seawolf06 07-29-2005, 08:53 PM they're brand new with u-joints? that's not a bad deal at all.
IrocSS85 07-30-2005, 12:07 AM Ive sold quite a few for around 125-150, usually between 10K-40K mi. but in perfect shape.
Usmuscl398 07-30-2005, 08:47 PM V6's are the same, most all are interchangeable from 93-02
robvas 08-01-2005, 12:19 PM $125 or so. They are not as strong as the stock steel driveshaft, so keep that in mind. You can get a steel one re-balanced for $30 or $40 if you call around.
You can also put them on a third gen.

I installed my LS1 Aluminum drive shaft while I still had a rubber trans mount. Vibrations decreased DRAMATICALLY from my stock steel unit.
Then after snapping the trans mount, I replaced it with a poly one, and got a LOT of vibrations.
This weekend, I rotated the drive shaft 180* on the pinion (disconnect, rotate the pinion 180* and reconnect) and all my vibrations are gone.
I'm left to assume that the rubber mount was soaking up all the vibrations, and the poly mount was just transferring everything right into the floor.
Doing this might have helped your problem, if you didn't try it before going with the Denny's.
97FormulaWS-6 08-02-2005, 01:51 PM I tried everything.... trust me on that one... the 180* trick, LS1 mount, Prothane Mount, ES Mount, Steel DS, etc....
I ended up gutting the drivetrain from the tranny back, New Denny's Nitrous Ready, Strange 12 Bolt, and all new suspension; no more vibs anywheres...
kaoticcamaross 08-03-2005, 01:24 PM I just want to know if theres any real benifit to changing form my lt1 shaft to and ls1 shaft?

The LS1 shafts are balanced properly.
The LT1 shafts were plagued with being poorly balanced, leading to vibrations at speed.
kaoticcamaross 08-03-2005, 03:40 PM what is the wieght of both and how much stronger is the steel than aluminum?
brxxt 08-03-2005, 04:16 PM first off, i went to get my steel driveshaft balanced, and watched the guy do it... he put it on the machine and he showed me the needle... it was PERFECTLY balanced, even he was amazed by how balanced it was.. yet i still had a lot of vibrations around 75mph+
the new ls1 driveshaft turned the ride as smooth as butter at speeds past 120mph (i tested it last week)
i dont know why or how but all i know is there was a difference of NIGHT AND DAY.
the sleel shaft is like 16lbs and the ls1 alum. is like 11lbs i think, someone let me know if im wrong...

What RPM was he running the shaft at when he showed you that? I had my steel one balanced at 3K rpms, and it vibed like a MOFO at speeds above 75 MPH; when it was rebalanced at higher RPMS (Closer to 6K) the vibs lessened, but were still there.
GM is weak in their driveshaft design and manufacturer, especially the F-Body DSs. I talked with Denny of Denny's Driveshaft for over 2 hours when I picked mine up about the F-Body Driveshafts and stuff. Basically he can rarely get them to balance above 4-5K rpms, his NR shaft he can hold a balance to over 8K rpms depending on the application; Mine's balanced to about 7K.
SMUJeremy 08-04-2005, 04:35 PM My 1LE driveshaft arrived yesterday, I can NOT wait to put it on. My u-joints are completely shot.
Fujimo 08-04-2005, 08:03 PM Installed my LS1 Driveshaft today, took about 20 minutes. It was well worth the money. Alot smoother ride, the gear noise decreased and its incredibly smooth at highway speeds. before it felt like something was holding me back and rattling the car. thats completely gone now. LS1 DS
SMUJeremy 08-11-2005, 09:05 PM Got the 1LE installed today and it is DEFINATELY smooth as silk on the highway. I am still getting some drivetrain noise though when I shift between D-R and R-D.
Josh'95Z28conv 08-12-2005, 12:04 AM I installed my LS1 DS earlier this year. A few days later this happened... http://community.webshots.com/album/167097112FsQKxV It happened on the dyno at about 6k rpm. Might have been bent or something I dont know.
Tonight I installed my stocker that I had balanced last week. It cost me $30. Thats a whole lot less than an LS1 DS, and its stronger. Its nice and smooth now as well.
Point is, stock steel DS that is balanced > LS1 DS :p
Warlock1313 08-22-2005, 12:33 AM I wonder if you can use a ford motorsports aluminum driveshaft if you change the yokes. I have sprayed off the line running 11'5 no problems, I even swaped into another of my stangs.
O-taka 08-22-2005, 03:41 PM Warning - don't change the U-joints on an LS1 driveshaft unless they are wobbly or out of tolerance.
i bought a used LS1 driveshaft and had a shop change the u-joints cuz some genius there said it was really important to do it. there were putting in some other stuff so i said go ahead.
i shoulda just put it in myself because it started vibrating at anything over 70 in 6th w/ 3.73s. had to find a shop that could balance an alum driveshaft, and he said the new u-joints were good, but it was out of balance. he balanced it up to 4,000 rpm (their machine's max) but now i still get some vibration above 85mph in 6th, with i think is around 5,000+ rpm actual ds speed. so basically i'm still not happy.
i think i'll just go find another used on on ebay
bunker 08-22-2005, 04:17 PM Always take the word from board member's over some shop that you don't know and they say it's a good "idea".
brxxt 08-24-2005, 10:15 PM Amen to that
theres been so many cases of mechanics and shops telling me the complete wrong info when i have 1000's of "mechanics" that specialize in my car right here on the board...
i was talkin about this w/ my friend today :)
mike 96 ws6 08-25-2005, 10:48 AM I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times but:
Was there an actual 'recall' for the lt1 shaft or simply a TSB?
If it was a recall, what are the chances of me getting my DS replaced by GM?
It vibrates like **** at 70 MPH especially with the ES mounts and bushings. (http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/165/165549/folders/203810/1563715trallnewbushingsandspacerinstalled.jpg)
Gord's Green Z28 08-25-2005, 06:50 PM Does the LS1 driveshaft fit with the (somewhat rare) 9 bolt rear ends?

Holy Jeebus that is a clean undercarriage you got there. Mine was horribly oily and dirty when I changed out my mounts.

I have a good hot water pressure washer at the shop. :D
Anyone know if an Impala driveshaft will fit {diameter wise} if I cut it to the correct length?
I know the stock driveshaft is real close to the torque arm.
