Here's the mysterious dash pics for you guys

I was at the game, so I had my sister tape it so I could watch it later. For the record, it was not taped for re-broadcast, or profit, just so that I could watch it one time and then copy over the tape. With that legality aside, here are still images of the mysterious dash.

It honestly doesn't look like much to me. I watch the whole intro a few times, and there was nothing besides this that looked new or original or un-ordinary.

As for posting the whole video, I don't know the legalities of that. Plus, my sister used a crappy VCR with a crappy 20 times used tape. I had to capture the images on slow motion, because the tape is so jumpy. It is so bad, my camcorder had a hard time taking it off the VCR tape.

It doesn't look like a new interior but instead it looks like an old Chevy with white face guages. I would also say that because of the steering wheel which looks to have metal in the center.

General Z
07-14-2005, 12:37 PM
Heck, to me it almost looks like a sheetmetal type of flat dash, with some gauges stuck in it. It sure doesn't scream 2005 concept dash to me.

What, why is this thought to be a camaro dash did they say something to that effect or are people really reaching out there?

07-14-2005, 12:53 PM
At a quick glance that reminds me of the gauges in my old 79 Z28. Pretty sure the second gens had that flat panel, recessed guage look.

The other guage on the far top right almost makes it more 'bird like though, camaros have never had guages strung out in right field like that, guages were always front and center where they are supposed to be. Then again, maybe thats the only guages out there and i'm just imagining a line of gauges across the dash.

I am leaning to both sides with this one. For one, the metal center of the steering wheel screams original 1st gen, but at the same time the white face gauges scream retro 5th gen. Who knows, Chevy might've REALLY gone all out on the retro and made steering wheels with metal center hubs? Chances are though, that I'd say this is probably not as significant as we think (unfortunately).

General Z

Camaro was featured on the video, but not at the time the dash was shown. It was shown independently from any cars featured on the video. The video concentrated on the 57 Chevy, the new Vette and a 69? Camaro.

Due to that, I think there was speculation that this unknown dash was from a 200? Camaro, since it was not from the Vette or the 57 Chevy.

Holy crap I hope that's NOT the Camaro dash! It looks more like a Buick with the design and color scheme. The redline is at 6000 it looks like, so I wonder if that is an indication of anything or possible engine chioce.

General Z
07-14-2005, 01:01 PM
In the video when the gauge moves up to 6000, a engine can be heard revving up.

I think the restro dash in the new mustang might be my single biggest turn-off about that car.

With that said, these don't look nearly so bad. Doens't seem nearly as deep of a mineshaft to see the guages, and the fonts look modern and easily readable with a decent range of motion.

btw, looks like a 6200 rpm redline, the first tick or two past 6 is black or at least not red.

V8?

meissenation
07-14-2005, 01:10 PM
now I'll be the first to admit I don't know jack about engines or anything of the sort, but in my 3.4 v6 isn't the redline at like 5000 or 6000rpm? Wouldn't a v8's redline be higher?

General Z
07-14-2005, 01:10 PM
I think so, but it was probably generic sound effects anyway, as in not likely exactly matching the gauges featured.

SNEAKY NEIL

So if this is not the Camaro, and it looks like it isn't, then what is it? Is it a new car? If it is a new, yet-to-be-released car, then it looks like there will be another retro Chevrolet. I'm getting a little nervous.

I don't like the white faced gauges either. They are usually used on sporty vehicles so I wonder if that is a clue to anything. My eye keeps going to that black rectangular object in the dash that is cut off on the right of the screen.

From what can be seen, it looks like there is a lack of style or design. As someone pointed out. It looks like a sheetmeatal dash from a 60's car with modern gauges.

Flip94ta
07-14-2005, 01:21 PM
With a 6000 rpm redline it must be an ecotec!! Hell yeah retro dash and ecotec power!!

Okay just kidding. Although its blurrly, the ignition key looks squared off like old school GM keys. I'd say its an older car. I hate retro dashes, old camaro, new mustang, even my girlfriends 02 altima has those three deep pods. I hate that, I'll take a 4th gen style any time. My 01 maximas is nice also. KISS

I'm guessing its not a real dash at all but a studio prop fake dash they put together just to tape the intro. It looks awfully spartan and boring for a new car dash, but that's what you want for a background image so as not to take away from the players running across the screen in front of it.

I too was thinking that it looked like a prop. Look at the gas between the gauges, with all that empty space. And, the proximity of the steering wheel to the dash seems a bit close also.

DWray
07-14-2005, 01:57 PM
I think you people read too much into things. I'd say it's nothing more than a one-off dash put together for just the all-star game intro, or perhaps just as a cheap studio prop.

:p

Well, I guess I was off on the "3 equally sized pods" thing... it was so hard to take it all in when it was so unexpected.

That steering wheels looks to be modern to me... it even has the buldges at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock from grip... I doubt it's a metal center on the wheel, probably just the way the light is hitting the plastic of the airbag cover.

I really think this is an upcoming Chevy... still possibly a Camaro, but I would still bet it is something coming in the near future. Why go through all the trouble of making a prop dash board that looks so real, and even has a moving tach when you have a showroom full of real dash boards that you could film?

BTW: GREAT JOB posting the pics! Way to come through!

That's an old RT/10 Viper dash. I stared at one for a long time, and I know what they look like. The featureless circle to the left of the tach (where all the warning lights show up), the center gauges, and the air conditioning vents are a dead giveaway.

WHY this is on a CHEVY commercial I have no idea.

Best guess: the ad agency was lazy and pulled some stock footage to pump up the video a bit. Stupid, stupid, stupid. They should be fired posthaste and replaced with an agency that knows cars and gives a crap.

Are you sure? Looks different to me... and the tach is on the wrong side to boot (unless the changed the dash at some point on the old Viper...)

I wonder if they know how stupid they look to the enthusiast community because they hired an ad agency whose management probably drives S-Class Mercedes and whose production artists probably drive Integras--and are probably recommending their friends buy Camrys and secretly cheering GM's downfall.

Sorry. Sloppy crap like this in a high-profile venue pisses me off.

I agree.

Of course, it took us ... a pretty informed group of enthusiasts.... a decent amount of time effort to figure out what it was.... so 99.99999999999999999999999% of the world probably will never know what happened.

General Z
07-14-2005, 03:15 PM
Not to mention that the ratings for the All Star game were awful, per usual for that event. Combine that with the fact that the video was a 1 time video introducing the game. Combine those two factors, along with the enthusiast factor already mentioned and its pretty much official that 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999%(Added some 9's) of the population won't realize anything.

The sad thing is, since its not a prototype, why not use a real GM gauge set that looks good, like the Vette or a classic set of gauges like the 67 Firebird?

Damn nice catch! I think we are starved JUST A LITTLE, for another Camaro! If it does come out I hope they don't go just with white, and do more, ie GTO's. Some silver, maybe a lil' use of REAL CF ( I'm a CF junky :D ) in there, would be really cool.

So the answer to this huge riddle is that Chevy's Marketing team still has a large inability, no, scratch that, a borderline i-just-crapped-in-my-pants-and-i-need-help-because-i-am-mentally-unable-to-accomplish-that-task inability to produce a good promo?

I've come to the opinion that all these things that look like conspiracy at GM (keeping people confused over Camaro) or even a grand plan (small publicity leaks) are just symptoms of the organization. By this I'm including subcontracted publicity services, certain parts not operating in sync with the rest of the organization, etc..
