Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
so my 02 z28 rear end whines around 55-60 mph when im in 5th, just like everyone else who complains about this. however i read a bunch of posts and some people said its normal, other people said to get it to the dealer right away. the gears are stock 3.42's and i have about 26k on the clock. can we come to a consensus on what this is?
Re: Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
Now that you mention it, my A4 has a slight whine on acceleration. I'm not sure if it was coming from the engine itself or the rear end, because i can't really get out and test it.
If you're worried about it, just get the diff drained, cleaned, and refilled, or go and buy a 12 bolt so you'll know what's up.

Re: Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
yep mine whines at the same speed with it at cruise and acc, so I'm taking it to the dealer before ny warranty ends, hell the things leaks from the front pinion as well, so I'm sure I can get them to fix that, but not so sure about the whine-hell I might have them put some 4.10 gears in it, if the price is right, if I'm going to hear whine it might as well give me some performance. Its pretty annoying that this happens with our crap weak rears. Mine has gotten worse with the added miles
Re: Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
My rear end (stock 3:42's on a M6 2000 TA) whine AND make a rough "grinding" type of sound. 106k on the clock. The whine gets louder from about 15mph to wherever (like 70mph)... just whines and whines. Funny, it almost sounds like high-voltage power lines making that high pitched / frequency buzz. The grinding type sound only happens at lower speeds and is arguably more noticable under acceleration. It still has no problem making the noise when simply slowing down in nuetral with only brake (most noticable when slowing from about 35-40mph to 5-10mph. What have I done? Replaced rear rotors and brake pads with GM factory's. Replaced rear wheel / axle bearings and put in new fluid w/ additive. Still does same exact thing. I figure it's the gears...
Re: Rear End Whine (yes i searched, have a ?)
well I just took mine in to the dealer to check ot my whine which is at the same mph as yours and they told me that it is in fact the gears that are whining and that its covered under warranty. So I'm having them put 4.10 motives in there-thunder racing even has a sale on them right now
Since they had to replace the gears they aren't charging me to install them, my only amount will be for the gears, since they're high performance they won't pay for them. So I would get yours to the dealer right away and see if its the gears, might as well if its under warranty- everyone could use a set of gears

yep dropped my baby off today, dealer told me it was the pinion bearings had gone bad (kinda surprised at only 26k). i wish i could have em put in 4.10's, but alas.... im kinda lacking in the money department....
