About potential GM rear-wheel-drive products: First of all, for those who say GM is overcommitted to front-wheel-drive, I’d say that’s not quite true. We have the small rear-wheel drive architecture that will spawn the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. We have the Cadillac CTS, STS and SRX, three excellent rear-drive vehicles. And of course we have the Chevrolet Corvette and the Cadillac XLR. And the rear-wheel drive 2005 Pontiac GTO is practically sold out, despite initial worries of whether it would ever reach its targeted volume of 18,000 a year. Right now on the West Coast they just don’t have enough of them to go around, because it’s such a great car to drive. So there’s a whole host of rear-wheel-drive cars that we have already

I know Z284ever already posted a link to this article, but I thought the above highlighted deserved it's own thread.
Jason E 06-03-2005, 11:50 AM Uhm, not quite sure how he can say that. But hey, I have a navy 6 speed in stock. Come on down guys, and get it! Maybe I have one of a handful left in the Northeast?? :D
If they are selling like hot cakes out west they should ship the Northeasts winter supply out there.
Bob Cosby 06-03-2005, 12:01 PM Already commented in the other thread. I don't understand how a sales rate of less than 1000 per month for 2005 GTOs adds up to 18k in a year - unless they are counting on doubling those sales through the summer. Which is possible, I suppose.

doh... I posted too late.
was't 2005 model only going to be 12,000 originally? Or are they still tring for 18,000 a year but just making the '05 year short (time and units) and pringing out the 2006 sooner.
Bob Cosby 06-03-2005, 12:26 PM I thought they had lowered the 2005 sales goal, but I don't know the exact number. If they did, then Lutz' statement is n/a from the get-go, IMHO.
DrewSG 06-03-2005, 12:34 PM The 2005 GTO's didn't start shipping till January I thought

Production start is September and we get them by the turn of the year.
The 2005s are in fact almost sold out because production is about to end (shortened year). For 2006, GTO will start production next month (if not sooner) and will be in showrooms this fall.
Remember, the higher up guys at GM consider a car sold after it's shipped to the dealer, not when you buy it like the lower level guys and you & I consider it.
poSSum 06-03-2005, 03:31 PM 2005 YTD sales (ignoring model year) are 5,465 which would translate into 13,116 for the calendar year. I'm glad to see they're selling better but don't quite understand Bob's reasoning either.

So they're almost done producing them (something less than 18k, if memory serves), and dealers have placed orders for them all - thus "sold out" becomes valid?
Not trying to argue with your or question your statement, but that doesn't seem to be very good justification for Lutz' comment - unless his primary audience were those higher up guys that you referenced.
Gripenfelter 06-03-2005, 04:25 PM Are those U.S. sales or global sales?

Pontaic sold 2,952 GTOs in Dec.
8,417 in 6 months = 16,834 for the calendar year (Summer not included)

Not sure I follow what you're trying to say. Please explain.
I will add that though Pontiac did indeed sell 2,954 GTOs in December, that and September sales were huge outliers compared to the rest of they year:
Dec: 2954
Nov: 1130
Oct: 1258
Sep: 2678
Aug: 967
Jul: 897
Jun: 598
May: 638
Apr: 650
Mar: 719
Feb: 606
Jan: 476
What was it that made those two months so big?
Another interesting thing to watch....starting in Jul, 2004 sales were much better, thus the 05 cars will have to sell much better than they are now in order for folks to post these big percentage number gains.
30thZ286speed 06-04-2005, 01:01 AM I believe they cut the '05 production from the 18K units to 12K units, unless GM reversed that desision and I didn't hear about it.
By the way how many '05s were destroyed in that train wreck a few months ago?
Omegalock 06-04-2005, 01:36 AM 12k or 18k don't really care. I'm just glad to hear they are selling better than they were last year.
I might not like the car but I don't want to see it fail.
Bob Cosby 06-04-2005, 08:01 AM Believe it or not, neither do I. RWD V8 is a good thing - even in a package that doesn't appeal to me personally.
Darth Xed 06-04-2005, 10:29 PM I think the reason for the September sales spike is because it's the first time GM put a rebate on the 04 GTO... That's when I got mine, FWIW...
lookingforwheels 06-05-2005, 01:51 AM I've seen quite a few now on the roads down here in S. Florida. As we all know when the 04 GTO came out everyone turned thier noses, but for the most part everyone I've talked to seems to like the "newer": GTO with those "cool" scoops and 400 hp.
guionM 06-05-2005, 11:47 AM I now usually see at least 2 or 3 GTO's per day out here.
What's really remarkable is that almost all are 2005 Goats with scoops.
I guess I'm in the minority in prefering no hoodscoops.
Pandamonkey 06-05-2005, 01:29 PM I have still never seen one in person.:(
I guess it's because they don't make them for the great white north.
97z28/m6 06-05-2005, 01:51 PM i'v seen one red one at mosport last year and a friend of mine seen a black one.they're nice.
SCNGENNFTHGEN 06-05-2005, 02:20 PM I was at the E-town last night for the Snap-on Night of Thrills, and I saw about 6 GTO's total just walking from my truck. 3-05's , 3-04's, 1 of the 04's had the 05 hood and spoiler added to it. Half were black, half red, I actually like them with the new hood. I still wish they would do something with those sunflower wheels! Either chrome them or lose em', IMHO they do not do the car any justice. I see them here and there on the road.
grossesexy 06-07-2005, 02:11 AM I used to see 3 04 GTO's regularly in Lawrence, and I still see one black one around here. I have never seen an 05 on the streets around here or at a dealership or anything. I just want to see a freaking 05 so I can comment on how the thing looks in person.
SCNGENNFTHGEN 06-08-2005, 03:01 PM As I was ridding past the local dealer (can't recall the day but within the last week or so), when I saw they got in 2 blue 05's and they happened to have a crowd checking it out at that time. The doors were open and they were all looking it over. I haven't seen them since! I guess they got sold already. I have seen quite a few move from the dealers, only because I've been watching. They'll get a grey 1 then its gone, a red gone yellow gone, etc. so it seems around here at least they are sellin' em'. Only recently have I started to see them out and about, even though I have seen a steady stream of them moving off the lot, 04's included. The 05's do seem like they are moving a little faster than the 04's were.
RobsWS6 06-08-2005, 07:57 PM 18K is the absolute max the plant can make. Came close last year at 15,7xx with all the problems getting started.
12K this year because of the short build year. They wanted the '06 cars here in the normal Fall new car timeframe instead of Jan has as been the last two years.
They are selling pretty good and seem like the '06's should sell as good or even better. A little more convience to the interior with faster moving seats, door lock button, lit steering wheel controls, and another power out let. At least IMHO :)
