Mallett Cars To Build V8 LS2 Powered Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky
Mallett Cars, Ltd. has announced their next venture: the V8 powered Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. These 2 seater roadsters will be powered by the LS2 V8 engine that is currently used in the C6

Should make a pretty sweet track car. I wonder what the price will come to.

The general consensus has been that a V8 wouldn't fit in that car.

Anyway, if they do it, that would be pretty neat. Might screw up the handling though.

I wonder how much more it weighs then the 4 banger? If it was not much that would be an incredible combo. Just like a Shelby cobra. I would be in love.

Why didn't General Motors do this? Even the 5.3 would have made this car a no-brainer.

BTW: 2.4 Ecotec is about 270 lbs, LS1 is about 390 lbs ==> weight distribution isn't going to an issue in a 2800-lb car.

Alright now who will be the first to make a Cobra body kit for the Solstice so my dad can finally have his dream Cobrak kit car.

Really, who DIDNT see this coming in one form or another?

I'm thinking it'll be within a hundred or so lbs of the c6. Given that the Ls2 weighs 120lbs over the 2.4 ecotec and given the structural bracing, etc.... needed to make the car cope with all the added hp/tq of the Ls2, it'll most likly make its way into the 3,000lb's easily unless they take the weight off other areas.

Still, if they can pull this off for under 10-12k, it would be a hell of a ride and still represent a good value. Cheapest v8 roadster available now is the corvette and the convertible version of it goes or 57k i believe. Imagine if Mallett can deliver this for 35k or less (price of a Honda s2k). That'd be something.

Kinda reminds me of the monster miatas (5.0 powered). Of course they were lighter, but the standard 225hp 5.0 was good enough to get them into the 12's. Amazing.

Any guesses on how fast this Ls2 Solstice will be?

Low 12s, high 11s if it can hook up.

Heard some interesting comments about this scenario from interesting sources quite a while back. Hmmm, makes for some interesting implications.

Let's see what rear axle they use in this thing first. I'm guessing the stock Solstice/Sky rear axle won't suffice. If it does... ???? ... maybe the Nomad got dropped for another reason. ;)

I would guess they would use the upgraded CTS-V rear end. The standard Kappa uses the 'basic' CTS unit.

I wouldn't bet on Mallet being able to do the conversion for only $10-12K.

But I'd bet that GM could do the conversion for about, uh . . . FREE if they wanted to. (And still charge 5-8K more for the car).

BTW: Corvette roadster starts at $52,245.

They would never do a V8 Sky or Solstice because it would intrude on Vette territory. I also doubt they could do it for FREE, but I'm sure it wouldn't cost them more than $5,000. Then they could charge $10,000 more than the base car and still be out ahead.

Who wouldn't want a 400 horsepower 2900 lb roadster for 34-35k?

I was thinking more the 5.3 and $5-8K more. Who wouldn't buy a $25-28K 300 HP V8 roadster over a Miata, Z4, or SLK? That's a hell of a compelling proposition.

And as far as assault on the Corvette icon--pleeze! If GM had any balls, they wouldn't care. They'd just do the best product at the best price, rather than limiting themselves because "it can't be as good as Corvette (gasp)!

A google search should fetch you everything you need to know about why the Senator would not be impressed by a 400 HP Solstice.

I had already made up my mind that I would be purchasing a Saturn Sky as long as it lived up to expectations when it hits the showroom. I certainly won't wait for GM to do anything about the powertrain. After I get bored after 6 months of driving it, you can bet that a current V8 will get shoehorned in there as long as it will fit. ;) then we'll know what works and what breaks.

The LS2 and the Ecotec are supposed to be fairly the same size.. Yes the CTS-V rear will be used.. And the Saturn Sky will result in better times with it's autostick trans (rumored with up and down gear selections on the steering wheel) and Traction Control.. GM will not offer a v-8 solstice or Sky.. but Mallet will and I hear the conversion is slated to cost 12K...

Hrrrm.....$12k sounds very, very low.....

I'd say the swap would take $12k in parts alone. Between the engine, wiring, exhaust, rear end, clutch, tweaked suspension, engine cradle, etc.... I have a hard time believing Mallet will hand you the keys for $12k over stock even if they were to pass along savings realized by selling off leftover, unused stock pieces.... I wonder how strong that Aisin trans. is....?

I'd guess over $20k, out the door with you only having to sign on the dotted line....

That said, I'd LOOOVE to have one :D....
